...but sometimes there is some sort of life in the lifeless body. Gavin Portland is a true example of exactly that! This is just the type of band that shows us how important it is to believe and trust our own judgment and capability to attain our goals. But at the same time Gavin Portland turns everything upside down by mixing hard rock with indie while screaming their lungs out.

Gavin Portland’s sound comes straight from the heart and ’Views of Distant Towns’ is barbed progressive punk rock – an altogether dedicated album from the young Icelandic hardcore scene. The band’s clear musical inspirations come from bands like Shellac, DC hardcore, Slint, and Drive Like Jehu. We are talking hardcore punk rock with remnants of indie melancholy.

Before releasing their debut album on 12 Tónar, they themselves released the EP’s ’The End of Every Minute’ (2005) and ‘...tell us how it ended, tell us how we died’ (2005). On 12 Tónar you also find the two first solo albums of guitarist and singer Thórir under the alias My Summer as a Salvation Soldier. Here he delivers heart-wrenching and personal singer/songwriting of the intimate kind, whereas Gavin Portland gets intimate in a whole other knock-about way.

British rock magazine Kerrang picked Gavin Portland out as one of the three best bands playing Iceland Airwaves 2006. ‘Views of Distant Towns’ is a progressive rock album and it’s hard to believe it’s Gavin Portland’s debut.

Quite honestly, there might not be an album that sounds as dirty and filthy as this. Back in 1994 the Cherubs released Heroin Man, which stands as one of the most ugly records I’ve ever heard. Not that it’s really any noisier than anything I’ve posted about on here before; it’s just that it captures a feel that most others don’t. It somehow manages to take all the grime and sweat that you picture coming off the stage and putting it into a sound. This album practically drips of filth; honestly…it might make you want to bathe.

The Cherubs was a foursome that was based out of Austin TX. However, they only managed to release two full albums before they called it quits sometime in 1995. Heroin Man serves as that second and final album, as well as their definitive record in their discography. Later a collection of singles and whatnot would be released titled Short of Popular. There are occasionally bands that sound exactly like where they came from and it’s no doubt that the Cherubs were one of those bands. The state of Texas is ever present in their sound, to the point where you almost feel as if your sitting in some dingy dive bar, complete with brawls, and to top it all off…no air conditioning. That’s the best I can do in describing just as to how this record sounds to me, so just listen to the songs and develop your own scenario.

SCUL HAZZARDs are a guitar based noise rock band from Brisbane, Australia. They make aggressive deconstructionist rock sometimes within pop structures, but often through acting counter to these sensibilities their most unique work is created. Regardless of what path their song writing takes they create dense songs that are complex yet accessible.

While their early releases (knee deep in blood that isn’t ours single - self-released, 2006, and House of Heads EP - Valve Records, 2006) were for the most part primal in nature their more recent material (Count Less Dead EP, Valve Records, 2007), retains much of their primitive aggression but is far more complex and focused. This is in part due to a lineup change - two members leaving (one to join New Zealand’s Die! Die! Die!) - and more importantly because of the remaining and additional members matured approach leading to more intuitive and measured playing, and more complicated arranging.

As if forged from the deepest, darkest mines of a place with deep and dark mines, this monster-times-ten-to-the-gazillionth album slices through time and space; cutting straight to the Earth’s core, like a divinely wrought instrument designed to dig deep, dark mines. “Cosmoerotic Dialogue with Lucifer” weds heavy, tight, 60’s style fuzz-psych to tantric astro-Kraut. This coitus yields a handful of hair-flipping punkers that should have all the kids in mescal-soaked neck braces before the end of track 6.

With the band name The Arson Project and album title ‘Blood and Locusts’ I first expected a hip deathcore combo. When I looked in the booklet and saw this baby was recorded and mixed with William Blackmon, the mastermind behind the Swedish grindcore band Gadget I hoped I was wrong. And I was, together with Nasum and Pig Destroyer you can place The Arson Project in the same category as Gadget. The quartet sounds eager on ‘Blood and Locusts’ and although the ten songs in fourteen minutes are almost every time played ultra fast they avoid the trap of monotonic music.

Especially in song five “Mentalt Avrättad” The Arson Project shows they can do more than simply play full throttle. In the first part of this song the grindcore is mixed with Tragedy influences and later on the tempo slows down to the territories of Kongh. A perfect break of the rage that has been spilled by these Swedish dudes. In every other song a dissonant guitar riff, drum clap or break gives this band an own face. Yes, this is how I like my grindcore and I can’t wait for more stuff from The Arson Project.

The last couple of years Iceland is on the rise. Of course Sigur Rós is a well known artist from that country but it seems that artists like Minus and Olafur Arnalds are getting the attention they deserve too. Olafur Arnalds once was the drummer of Celestine, a post har band that debuts with ‘At the Borders of Arcadia’. In six songs in 26 minutes they lay down a palette of atmospheric noises, dissonant riffing anddcore/metal heavy drums. This reveals itself the best in the song “God (and)”, especially in the climax at the end of the song. It's like Knut covers an Isis song from the ‘Mosquito Control’ area. Of course this is not something new in 2008 but Celestine is an example how to play it the right way. The six songs are full of aggression and the listener is pulled into a stranglehold for the whole length of the album.

I very nearly saw this band, in a barn, no less. From the time I saw the flier I was stoked on the show; black and white crass styled font, touring international hardcore bands, and almost certainly couscous or lentils. The show was unfortunately cancelled. I think I had to work anyway. I'm glad I picked up this CD, though. I could, at the very least, see what I missed. The OK Computer-esque artwork wasn't giving me any clues. Though I was happy to see a variant from the traditional “gruesome war scene, band name” formula.

Pechblende hail from Quebec, a scene that produced the now defunct, but wonderful Cobra Noir. Pechblende's sound isn't far from that of Cobra Noir's; dark, brooding hardcore with just enough metal to not be corny. From Ashes Rise, His Hero is Gone et al come to mind. That isn't to say that Pechblende is a clone, there are some welcome melodies and guitar hooks that echo Saetia or Orchid. Collapse's eight tracks go by at a moderate pace, with some nice melodic breaks from the fast drum/vocal assaults.

"Cars Make Shadows" pretty well captures their sound. A deep melodic guitar intro gives way to the traditional Tragedy-styled verses, then, a transition to a melodic break. This is the part where you stop running in a circle and gently nod your head and look at your feet. The songs are interestingly paced; there isn't a clear formula that inhibits so many other bands. The addition of "Taepodong I” and “Taepodong II" serve as sort of instrumental bookends. The last three tracks shine in particular, the aforementioned "Cars Make Shadows," instrumental "Taepodong II," and closer "Collapse."

The eight-song length wouldn't suggest this is an LP, but the songs can sometimes drag on. The lyrics aren't as major a divergence as the music; they're mostly meditations on the modern world, capitalism, and the monotony of a suit and tie. They're delivered well enough though. The vocalist has good intensity and variation. My only complaint is that the drums are a bit understated at times, the guitar tone isn't exactly what you'd expect from this type of music, but, nonetheless, it works well. It's interesting to see a single vocalist tackle this style. This band isn't following conventions, which is impressive because they simultaneously warrant comparison to some of the greats of the genre. For a debut release Collapse is promising. If Pechblende can continue to evolve as a band they may very well become the object, rather than the subject, of comparison.

Plus the attitude of their members and the obscurity of their songwriting, Rhino is shown as one of the most punishing, arrogant and merciless bands of their country. Formed in december of 2004 by Javier Gálvez, guitars and vocals, (Burial, From The Cross, Left Hand Riders) and Julen Gil, drums (Subliminal, Positiva) the band released in January of 2006 their demo “ Name the horn bearer” with Miguel Moral on bass and start to gain recognition as a brutal live act.
