Seventeen tracks of brutal, grinding crustpunk from Budapest, Hungary! They have been an acrtive part of the local DIY punk community since the late 90's and have numerous releases available in Eastern Europe, and have played with many well-known American and Western European hardcore, punk, and grind bands who've ventured to Hungary, and have made a lasting impression on those they've met. The cover artwork for this CD is by famed NYC activist artist Eric Drooker of WW3 Illustrated (etc.) fame. LP version on Profane Existence recs.

01 Take Your Vulgar Looks And Dangle 5:22
02 A Heart The Size Of A Family Tomb 5:20
03 Amid Laughter Let Us Perish 10:47

Year: 2009
Genre: Post-metal/Sludge/Hardcore/Experimental
Country: Sweden
Label:

Clawing up from the Bay Area underground, Black Cobra is ready to take the heavy music world by storm! Formed in 2002 by Rafa Martinez (Acid King) and Jason Landrian (ex-Cavity) this duo has been laying waste to audiences, taking on all comers, and leaving the remains to rot in their wake.

Their sound is a crushing mix of High On Fire-tinged bulldozer metal and Buzzov*en’s Southern-fried sludge, with a heaping dash of Melvins-style heaviosity. After releasing two incredibly well-received full lengths previously on At A Loss Recordings, Black Cobra has taken their rightful place atop the metal throne as the latest signing to the true home of all things heavy - SOUTHERN LORD!

Their first Southern Lord release, Chronomega, finds them treading in familiar territory; working with the sound that won them raves from fans and critics alike, while refining it to its sharpest point. No longer just another blunt object, Black Cobra’s music is now a razor-sharp weapon and a true force to be reckoned with. Produced by Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis, Sleep, High on Fire), Chronomega is a raging slab of pure, unadulterated heaviness!

Recorded in Chicago at Electrical Audio Studio, sound engineer extraordinaire Steve Albini (Pixies, Mono, PJ Harvey, The Stooges) has captured My Disco’s minimal yet intricate sound perfectly. Well known for their precise and flawless live performances, the Melbourne three piece have been building a strong following since they formed in 2003, headlining their own shows and playing support to international bands such as Battles, Mogwai, Death From Above, Comets On Fire and Deerhoof. In 2006 they left their mark on the Australian music scene with the release of their debut album Cancer, from which stemmed an abundance of glowing reviews and radio support, sold out album launches in Melbourne and Sydney, plus extensive tours of Australia and abroad. Hammers from Manchester come out all guns blazing on their first release, joining the likes of Burning The Prospect in the UK d-beat pantheon. Compared to BTP's epic sound, Hammers sound positively scruffy in comparison, but that suits them down to the ground as they have more of an Artimus Pyle-esque crazed thrash feel propelling it along. There's a nice wayward layer of noise slathering it all, although that might be down to bits of the recycled mulch sleeve being deposited on the grooves

05. Pomníky poraženým

Country: Czech Republic
Genre: Screamo, Neocrust.
Label: DIY.

To call this a demo is correct but not the whole story. The band are a five piece (four piece on this demo) containing 3/4 of Lakmé, a band on hiatus (and possibly broken up for good) as their bassist has left to go travelling. Whilst it is sad that Lakmé have disbanded for the time being, Dakhma carry on in their footsteps to some extent, so this consolation can at least be taken.

Hailing from the Czech Republic, Dakhma play a modern form of screamo emo very much influenced by great jangly French bands such as Mihai Edrisch and Bokanovsky. They definitely do their own take on it though and it sounds great. Deep vocals screamed over fast guitars and drums with an occasional reduction in tempo to mix things up a bit. It's a bit more basic than Lakmé to be honest, and not quite as chaotic. If pushed I would have to say it doesn't sound as good, but that's being unfair as it's a demo and Lakmé really were fucking great. They're clearly trying to play the style slightly differently and it works.

There are four songs on the CDr, plus an introduction. Track two 'Od Vteriny Jedna' is a highlight for me, sounds a lot like songs from the first Celeste LP. I love that guitar sound, lots of quick changes in pitch in time with the drum beats. This CDr is really DIY, coming in an envelope with artwork and song titles glued on. Enough with the comparisons with Lakmé, check this out for its own sake!

Elektrocas hail from the Czech Republic and this, I believe, is their second record released after a split 7'' with Fetch! last year. That record is really cool by the way, Fetch! play emo with lots of nice grooving instrumental parts and vocals shouted over the top now and again. Elektrocas do a similar thing and have drawn comparisons with Yaphet Kotto, mainly because of the way the vocals are sung I think. The instruments sound somewhat similar too I suppose.

Back to this new record, Elektrocas' sound has changed a little. I would now describe it as a sort of noise rock style combined with emo. It is to emo what Sofy Major are to screamo - it's in the right ballpark but there are clearly other rock influences going on. The vocals on the first and second tracks 'Bloodline' and 'Aimless Fight' don't really sound like emo at all. Having said that, on the third song 'Disburden' they return to sounding a bit like the song on the split with Fetch! Other songs further on have this more emo sound too.

Christ almighty. It's 23 minutes of solid soul-venting, head-busting chaos. Quite a stanch set of material from this maniacal quintet. By the way, this is their debut collection of tracks and it's all recorded on 2” tape. Like you're supposed to give a fuck, I know. How could such innocent lambs be so mean to their instruments you say? These are the offspring of Beelzebub. They know no other way. This self-titled release is full of adamant energy and is dangerously delectable to individuals who have eternal faith in one's own ears. Consequently, the LP format has been pulled off shelves and set afire in all red states after widespread backwards playing was linked to Pat Robertson's prostate ills. The blood of JESUS MAKES THE SHOTGUN SOUND desires no forgiveness. Put that on your Harvest Crusade. Amen.

Genre: hardcore, punk.
Country: Russia

Sandinista! was a band founded on the basis that whole hardcore punk thing is more than music and fashion. The band itself tried to exemplify that idea with their lifestyles and music. All band’s members (in case that line-up has changed few times) took part in or supported various groups including antifascist resistance, anarchist movement, Food Not Bombs and Animal Liberation. Also all members were strict vegans or vegetarians. Sandinista!’s lyrics deal with such issues as war, ecology, consumerism, society pressure and extinction of native breeds. Musically inspired by 90s heavier newschool hardcore (Unbroken, Undertow and “rather be dead” era Refused) and political hardcore bands like Econochrist, Catharsis and Tragedy Sandinista! tried to step away from punk hardcore standards creating their own vision and style.

The bands has tragically ended with the death of Timur – the lead gitarist who wrote most of the music. On 13th of November 2005 Timur and Sandinista!’s ex-bas player Maxim were attacked and savagely stabbed with knives by group of neonazis. Timur who was 20 years old at that time died from multiple wounds and blood loss. According to police investigation murder was carefully planned beforehand while nazis new Timur for his antifascist activity. 10 people were found guilty and are sentenced to imprisoment. The main organizer of this murder is also identified but he aparently fled to another country and is not caught and sentenced yet. All other nazis blamed only one participant of the group for murder while witnesses prove that not only he was using knive. Anyway those sentences are nothing compared to the loss of Timur by his friends, comrades, bandmates and parents. After Timur’s death other members refused to continue under name Sandinista! without him.

Timur will stay in our hearts forever. His talent and energy will live on with music he has created.

Nakot was formed at the end of 2005. At first we started the band with idea to play similar music as we listen to, cause at that time there was not so much, or better say not any bands in town we live who played even similar style...and of course we had a lot of that to scream about! We were sick and tired living in country like this which pass trough few wars, economical crises, nato bombing, international isolation in recent history...and just seeing local punk bands singing about their crew, their neighborhood, or some stupid joke songs...Our lyrics are mostly dark and apocalyptic… But the reason is not because that’s how they should be in crust/punk genre, but because the reality of civilization, we belong by birth to, is exactly like that. Also, the war as a subject in some of our songs is not a punk fetishism, but because the wars have been reality in this region for the last 15 years, and many of us have lived in the realities described in the lyrics of many crust bands. In the past two years we played a lot of gigs in Belgrade with local and touring bands, and all around the country.... also we had few line up changes... but from beginning of 2007, we are going stable with this line up. Feel free to contact us, but if you are racist, homophobic, sexist, nationalistic asshole you can just fuck off!!! The nightmare continues! Cheers! Nakot!

The brutality in their grind is much more real. I think this really shines through and shows itself through the face of the talent, production, and overall quality of their material. The vocals are so fucking different than the other shit out there right now. The guitar melodies are strangely familiar but follow much different patterns than other acts. So, I guess truth be told, AMBASSADOR GUN isn't even really grind. They're floating along aimlessly in their own space, playing something really unique, and that is one of the most important aspects of being a musician; being able to create without barriers. 01. Don't Be Late
02. Shit Whistler
03. Melted
04. Self Indulgent

Country: UK.
Genre: Posthardcore, Math Rock, Screamo.
Label: Wolf Among Wolves

This is an enjoyable debut from this Scottish band. Two really strong tracks and two instrumentals which are nice enough but kind of act as filler for me really. But 'Don't Be Late' and 'Melted' are pretty awesome frenetic hardcore songs with plenty of melody in the mix too. The riffs on 'Don't Be Late' are great, everything flows together and the shouted vocals work well too. Two members contribute vocals, sometimes individually and sometimes together. Their different vocal styles combine effectively. 'Melted' plays along similar lines, again frantic with occasional breaks of calm.

Back to the instrumentals, they are decent but I can't help feel they would be vastly improved if vocals were added. Just my opinion but they don't quite hold their own compared to the other two tracks. Fair enough if the band want to write songs with no vocals but it's just not my thing. Overall though the record is really solid. The band are playing in Sheffield and London at the end of the month so check them out if you live nearby! -Collective Zine-
