ANALENA was born in the fall of 1997 and decided to exist as a band worthy of its name. The termANALENA comes from the ancient Sanskrit, and translates as "like/by the fire". Too many great bands from this area succumbed to lack of enthusiasm, shortage of record labels and "infrastructure" in general, and last but not least, apathy. Members of ANALENA decided to be a different kind of band, the one that would keep the fire alive.

Although based in Zagreb, Croatia and rooted in punk rock ethos, ANALENA as a band was willing and determined to shatter many boundaries from the very beginning. It is symbolic that members of the band come from two countries, Croatia and Slovenia, and it comes as no surprise that during these 7 years neither listeners nor critics were able to strictly define and label their sound. In the case of this band, one man's hardcore is another man's noise is another man's punk. Diverse but steady, from bittersweet melodies and blistering hooks to pummeling and aggressive rhythms, ANALENA covers all the bases.

ANALENA worked hard from the start. Ana, Mijo, Miran, Six and Zet played towns many people wouldn't even be able to locate on the map, and beside playing all over Croatia, they also toured Europe a couple of times. They supported local scene through activism and providing help to many local bands, and in the end, through the very existence of the band.

In the past they had released Arhythmetics through Get Off Records and It's Never Too Late To Split Up, a split release with Sensual Love, as a joint release between Get Off Records and Interstellar Records.

Fresh out of the oven, Carbon Based is their second album, recorded and produced at Kozmo studio, Zagreb, by the members of the band themselves, with the noteworthy assistance provided by members ofLunar, another remarkable and friendly band from Zagreb. Carbon Based is a statement by a smart and mature band, an honest expression of determination and passion in full force. ANALENA follows its own instinct by merging charming melodies with intricate and shimmering rhythmic relentlessness. Stunning and flawless instrumentation combined with witty and poetic slogan-free lyrics takes care of the rest.

See you in the pit or see you with your headphones on. You are invited. Until then, as the band itself proclaims in the moving Work In Progress: “Stay alert!”

Möse son un grupo que vienen a presentarnos su música desde Gent-Bélgica, no parece un país muy hecho a esto ( por lo menos yo, no conozco muchos de allí, pero investigaré), pero cuanto más mejor. Pues eso, en este disco nos podemos encontrar con una magnífica mezcla y diferente variante, del stoner-rock más duro y crudo, junto al doom más elástico y machacante a la vez.

Temazos y digo temazos, porque están realmente bien elaborados y trabajados, con riffs piscodélicos y potentes, rock progresivo y un vocalista, muy particular. Mucha atrención a sus dos útimos temas, Glass y el que da nombre al disco. Maravillosos.

Un grupo interesante con un album, Halfway To Nowhere, bastante recomendable.

Sorprendente, genial y maravilloso stoner-doom de esta banda de Donetsk- Ucrania. Por momentos música extrema venida del doom más melacólico y sabroso y a veces, nos topamos con la música más psicodélica del stoner más grandioso enigmático y sombrío. Escuchándo tema a tema, podréis daros cuenta del crecimiento musical, de sus atmósferas, de su auténtica dulzura. Escuchar atentamente Red Bottle With Pills, una pequeña obra de arte, hecha musica.

En definitiva, sorpresa y de las buenas con esteos Ucranianos, que aparte de beberse el vodka como si nada, juegar bien al basket y pasar mucho frio (lo remedian con el vodka), han hecho un señor disco, digno de estar en la mejor discoteca.

Os presento el útlimo trabajo de estos Suecos, Switchblade. Un grupo bastante distante al tipo de metal que se realiza en este país, mucho más personales y de extrema calidad. No quiero decir con ello, que el resto de bandas del país, no molen, todo lo contrario.

Switchblade (2009), para empezar, lleva tres temas o temazos divididos en (parte 1) (parte 2) (parte 3). La primera parte, con toques oscuros, sombríos y donde, incluso, puedes respirar un ambiente mal sano y una monotonía de guitarras y batería. Es el claro ejemplo de esta banda y su interesante visión de la música extrema.

La segunda parte, pareciendo una clarísima continuación de la primera. Nos impregna mucho más odio. Nuevamente podemos ver esas guitarras y batería, que apenas han cambiado, pero amigos. Si hemos empezado a sentir hace unos minutos un estridente dolor en nuestros oídos, al escuchar al vocalista, empezar a poneros algodones humedos, porque la rabia interior va creciendo por momentos. La muerte y la venganza están a la vuelta de la esquina.

Y para terminar, la tercera parte. Aquí ya podemos empezar a escuchar un cambio musical importante. Desde el primer acorde, la tranquilidad y densidad de los temas anteriores, desaparece de un hachazo brusco y desafiante. Esa densidad se multiplica, el odio y la rabia del vocalista, se triplica. Estamos ante una auténtica lucha contra la muerte y que probablemente, ganemos. 18 minutos y 15 segundos de pura rabia y aplastamiento cerebral.

“Circular”, (editado por Magofermin y Moflete humano) muestra que sus más de 7 años de trayectoria han influido en su sonido. Sin dejar de lado las premisas que marcaron sus inicios, “hardcore con premeditación y alevosía” - “la melodía me llena de alegría”, y con una nueva formación, el grupo muestra en este nuevo trabajo una evolución hacia elementos sonoros más propios del post-hardcore o incluso rockeros que les acercan a bandas como Cordura o Berri Txarrak. Muestra de ello es la gran dinámica que contienen la mayoría de los temas que combinan a la perfección los pasajes puramente melódicos con compases llenos de distorsión y agresividad. “Circular” es la muestra de que la formación ha encontrado un sonido personal y propio.

MANUAL ZOMBIE is a New York/Brooklyn-based psychedelic band (like SKY PICNIC), a duo of two guys: Ahmad and Ben. Compared to SKY PICNIC their music is more sinister and far less influenced by 60ies/70ies psychedelic rock. MANUAL ZOMBIE's sound is at least to some degree rooted in the 90ies grunge, post punk and metal sound (though on tracks like "automatic people" some Sweet-Sister-Ray-VU-Punk is greeting). I'd also say I hear some BLACK FLAG influences, and I especially love that excellent distorted guitar playing. Their other main weapon is the voice - often spooky and menacing with strange spoken word passages: This is a trip to the dark realms of psychedelia. Enjoy!

La historia de Gatonieve se empezó a gestar cuando a finales de 2007 Elena Merlo (Neiz) y Javier García (Gizmo) se juntaron para tocar un repertorio que Elena había compuesto en solitario y que dió a conocer en los escenarios madrileños bajo el nombre de Neiz. Poco después se uniría al proyecto Israel Márquez (Numero) con el cual se completaría la formación actual. Tras trabajar los temas de Elena, componer otros nuevos y dar conciertos por la capital, surge la posibilidad en verano de 2008 de grabar en Barcelona, en los estudios Felicidad Producciones (propiedad de Lichis de La Cabra Mecánica), bajo la producción de Lluís Cots (Madee). La masterización ha sido a cargo de Santi García en Ultramarinos Costa Brava.

Para dicha grabación contaron con la importante colaboración de Juan Navazo de Nancy Hole, Eduardo Martínez y Laura Gómez de Lek Mun, Raúl de los Ríos de (lo:muêso) y Dani Vega de VYVIAN.

Ox Scapula hail from Stoke and this is their third release after a 7'' that came out last year and a 7'' split with Wooderson released quite recently. This latest record is an EP and is the first release for the new tape label Sea Owl. It comes in a really nice handmade paper box which slides out. The insert says these songs were the band's first recordings (recorded October 2007) so this is essentially their demo. I've not actually heard their more recent recordings so I can't compare how their sound has changed over time.

What we have here is Dischord style post punk but given a modern day makeover. My initial thoughts when I listened to it is that it sounds a bit like the more recent My Disco records. The guitar sound is similar to this, the bass is a key feature, grooving along in the background and holding the tempo along with the drums. The guitars are then free to wander about, sometimes playing repetitive riffs whilst at others flailing about and then occasionally losing the distortion and becoming quite melodic. There are occasional bits of feedback too which I am a fan of, such as in the intro to the first song and the outro of the last, there are bits elsewhere too. Over the top of it all there are vocals which are mostly shouted and sound really good and urgent. Overall it all works really well together.

Six songs in total here, all really solid. I am definitely interested in hearing the newer songs now that I've heard this EP. If you like noisy math punk with elements of Shellac, Hoover, My Disco and the like then check this out.-Oli Saunders @ Collective Zine-
