Brainworms - II Swear to Me (2009)

Country:
USA
Genre: hardcore, punk, post-hardcore
Label: Rorschach records

Brainworms is a punk, hardcore, post-hardcore band from Richmond, VA. Brainworms feature ex-members of Stop It!, Ultra Dolphins, Snack Truck, and Are You Fucking Serious? Brainworms feature angular, jagged guitars with spazzy and caustic vocals that bring to mind bands such as Jesus Lizard with a vocalist that reminds me of Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav. This album is Brainworms second release and reminds me of a mix between Ultra Dolphins and older screamo bands like 400 years. Overall, a unique twist on a sometimes tired genre of music. Highly recommended!

Attention Sludge-heads!!!!!! I came across these guys the other day online and had to get in touch with them to get this LP to review it. Listening to it immediately brought two things to mind: Church of Misery, and Holy Shit this kicks some ASS!!!!!! If you dig really bluesy, groovy, down-tuned, “bust your balls with a Louisville slugger” style heavy hitting stoner doom, then look no further then these guys form Hagen, Germany. If the likes of Church of Misery, Cavity, 16, Weedeater, El Thule, etc. make you excited, then check this sucker out for sure. It has the right amount of blues riffs, southern boogie, gruff booze drenched vocals, and is just a hard-hitting riff fest over all. These guys are too good for me to just pass up mentioning, the link is at the bottom of the review, so check them out, it’ll only take about five minutes of your time, but you’ll be addicted I’m sure. This is essential, and I can rarely say that with absolute certainty. -Hellride / Janet Willis-

Glass and Ashes are a California based punk/hardcore band from California who play a powerful screamy and melodic brand of hardcore similar to bands such as Planes Mistaken For Stars, Yaphet Kotto, or modern day bands like Comadre and Touche Amore. Glass and Ashes released two albums on No Idea records out of Gainesville Florida. The two albums I posted are Aesthetic arrest, which I believe came out in 2007 and 2008's S/T.

Another Great band featuring former members of Bullets-In. This band reminds me of ...Who Calls so Loud or other ebullition records "screamo" bands such as Portraits of Past and Funeral Diner. You Can Never Go Home Again is impressive and has two tracks clocking in at over 20 minutes a piece. The breathing Lessons 7" (demo) would have fit in great with bands such as Sinaloa, A day in Black and White, or City of Caterpillar. Definitely highly recommended. Country:

Genre: Screamo.
Label: Protagonist Music, Adagio 830, Sorry Records.

Who Calls So Loud features members of Portraits of Past and Funeral Diner....Who Calls So Loud formed after the breakup of Funeral Diner and quickly released these two albums. The double 10" and a four song 12" EP were released within a year before the band quickly broke up. ...Who Calls so Loud leaves us with a twelve song discography spread out between two records and a cassette discography released on Utarid Tapes earlier in 2009. ...Who Calls So Loud had a large fanbase before they even released their debut LP due to the band's previous projects. Both releases received rave reviews.

The band's sound has evolved from the groundwork laid down by Portraits of Past and Funeral Diner. ...Who Calls So Loud creates an epic and dark soundscape on their debut LP. Who Calls So Loud has a sound that brings to mind Funeral Diner, Portraits of Past, and possibly City of Caterpillar. Definitely highly recommended in my opinion.

Country: Italy
Year: 2009
Genre: doom, space rock
Label: Sangue Dischi

Vulturum is a 3-piece band from the foggy suburbs of Milan. Two drummers, one axe, one throat. Their sound comes from the same psychedelic depths of Boris and Earth combined with heavy tribalistic drumming in the style of Breach or early Neurosis, yet they add a gloomy, melancholy touch which puts them a few steps beyond the standards of the genre. Something like watching an aurora borealis drinking cheap scotch with a hungry wolf sitting by your side. A moment of grace going to end in blood very soon.

Country: USA.
Genre: Country, Folk, Rock.
Label: Sophomore Lounge Records.

Currently preparing for the release of their second album on Sophomore Lounge Records, The Only Sons have come a long way since the beginning. Kent Goolsby, Blake Loftis, and Jonathan Merritt have been playing music together since they were 16 years old.

Throughout their journey, the gang has seen many musicians come and go. Notable for The Only Sons was the loss of fiddle player Rebecca Ryan. However, her replacement by Andrew Mosiman and the solid lap steel/lead guitar sounds of Mike Burgess has left this band with a tight-knit group.

When asked how the alternative country sound of The Only Sons spawned, Goolsby explained that he g
rew up in a home filled with his parents' vinyl collection which included artists such as The Band, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, and Neil Young. Kent said, "I didn't really get it [Southern music] growing up because I always played punk music. Right around the time that we [his former band] were going in our weirdest direction, I starting thinking that I would just like to write real songs. I started having trouble finding purpose in really weird music. I was just losing my drive."

This new direction birthed The Only Sons and (a few years later) its first full-length release, Young Lungs, a nine
-song collection that kicks off with the immediately catchy "Modern Men." From here, the album progresses down a warm path of poetic lyricism and the Southern sounds that have put Nashville on the map. "Devil Wind," recorded only with acoustic guitar and Goolsby's raspy vocals, stands out as an evocative creation. Tracks like "Do You Wrong" and "Bad News" are quickly characterized by demanding lead guitar divisions and driving bass lines. Young Lungs is clearly an album into which these guys poured a whole lot of heart.

Now, less than a year later, The Only Sons are stoked to release their second full-length recording. Focusing more on memorable songwriting and less on poetic verse, Steel Hearts will feature 12 new tracks. While being released as a free download from theonlysons.
net, Steel Hearts will also be sold as an album with artwork.

Working with a brand new recording setup at Grand Palace Records seemed to be an amazing experience for the band. Goolsby described Grand Palace as an incredible studio and said, "It was so much fun. I miss it already." Along with members of The Only Sons, Steel Hearts will feature guest appearances by members of Zombie Bazooka Patrol and some contributing vocals from Joey Kneiser (Glossary). Fans can look forward to its release in June of '09.

As for the future, The Only Sons plan consists of playing shows, then playing some more shows, and when that is done, playing some more shows. Alongside conventional venues and bars, the boys also plan to perform at more houses and art spaces in the promising months to come.

We recorded songs in the spring to celebrate the warmth, and traveled in the summer to worship it. We found a home in the fall, and in it are giving birth to wax and grooves.

It's winter again. We have been making snow monsters to chase away the dead weather angels, and locking ourselves in a plaid basement to sing with machines. We listen back to the crash, boom and howl of our instruments with joyous relief that the spring is nearing again. Stay close, we'll see you soon.

If anything we've written so far deserves a single... it's Rufus.

That being decided we picked two songs to cover to throw with the old and new songs then visited UTG studios on Halloween. The purpose of this ep is to raise Rufus Robinson awareness. That and to let people know Canyons wants to party.

MyTerror was formed in 2005. They found their niche in hardcore, also being open-minded to alternative and metal. Due to their energetic and powerful presence they leave their footprints on every stage they walk on, like certain marks written in stone. Their lyrics (english / russian) deal with fascism and racism, global capitalism and any of the world’s unfairnesses connected to those threats. After the first demo and EP-recordings Andy, Steve and Zino call it a day after kind agreements (2007-2008). They find their replacements in Daniel and David on the guitars and Daniel on drums. This new line-up quickly progresses in search of a new sound. The EP planned to be released at the beginning of 2009 is not to appear, but at the same breath the band announces their 12 song full length-debut for the fall of 2009, the record which is now called TAKE YOUR LIFE BACK.

According to their logo the imagery of a detonating bomb gets a new definition, and my terror will show that even in Düsseldorf, a city known for its slick image outlined by lifestyle and glamour, a musical scene is able to develop that really stands for creativity and unity of the people instead of consumption, status symbols and fashion victims celebrating their insanity. Following this philosophy MyTerror release their debut album for free on kroogi.com. Feel free to download and donate some change if you wish to support the band.

The minc!._.What have you made?

Country: Russia
Genre: Raw, punk, hardcore, crust

2007: Before summer 2007 the Minc's music style was as a kind of fast punk-hardcore style for some years. In this style the split cdr with Unity of Inferior (Ptz, punk) was recorded. But in early summer 2007 some changes were happened in the Minc. Some members left the band and one new kid became its member. It was decided to make some changes in philosophy and music style of the band. Now the Minc sounds like d-beat style raw punk bands. We define the year of 2007 like the birth year of our new band with the same name.

2008: The Minc is playing gigs and preparing new materials. We have just recorded our material and we hope it will be issued soon!

2009: January - Our first 10 songs CDR "What have you made?" was released by My riot inward records. It was limited by 490 copies and was distributed very fast and now just some copies left. Find it in local distros!
March - We went to the studio again to record our new songs!
December - We finished our 8 new songs for the future releases. It took a lot of time because of our laziness and lack of free time.

2010: January - New 6-songs 7" EP and 8-songs mini-CD very soon!

Darkest Hour - Party Scars And Prison Bars DVDRip (2008)

Country: USA
Genre: Metalcore.
Label: Victory.

In my opinion not many bands seem to know what to do in order to make a DVD entertaining, unfortunately. But thankfully Darkest Hour is one of those bands that does, as rather than putting out a DVD full of boring live footage with half decent audio/video quality they've opted to mix things up with live shots, music videos, interviews, documentary styled footage from way back when, and plenty of random tour material that makes for a pretty amusing watch. Everything's basically cut together in one piece, with no real rhyme or reason other than a loosely chronological flow that kind of looks back on the band's early days, how the current lineup came together, etc. Amongst some of the rarer footage is a snippet from the band's first show way back in high school when they were a bad third-rate NYHC metalcore mosh type of band or something (from which time only guitarist Mike Schleibaum and vocalist John Henry have remained). Also blowing me away was the fact that they tossed in some footage of drummer Ryan Parrish and guitarist Kris Norris from their very first band back together back in 1993, along with some old shots of bassist Paul Burnette's days with the awesome Crackhead (quite possibly one of the best and most insane/amusing live bands ever).

Then there's interview footage interspersed with all of the other antics, talking about the history of Darkest Hour, former band members, their stint on Ozzfest, getting arrested, and plenty of tales of the band's apparently infamous reputation as heavy drinkers and hard partiers. The video for "The Sadist Nation" is thrown in as well, with studio audio set to live footage in both black and white and color (it all looks quite pro); with some "unofficial" yet similar (though less slick) music video types of montages for "Marching to the Killing Rhythm", "An Epitaph", and "For the Soul of the Savior" thrown in throughout. This main feature is just over an hour in running time, with about 30 minutes of bonus material tacked on. Most of the added extras are brief deleted scenes or uncut interviews with the band's friends and touring buddies (soundmen, roadies, merch dudes, etc.), adding more amusing anecdotes from tour and all that jazz. Then there's a 10-minute photo gallery from the band's entire world tour, as well as a shit-talking audio commentary added to the main feature. So overall you get about 90 minutes of content, and while not the greatest thing in the world, it's pretty entertaining - more so than a lot of the music DVD's I encounter, and definitely more so than it would've been if it was mostly live footage from various shows or whatever. Hell, I actually wish the damn thing was longer - you just can't go wrong with random backstage/tour footage. Seriously, for some reason no matter how mundane or silly that stuff is, it's just entertaining shit. This is a good one in the end, though. -Aversionline-
