Tanen. Quintet de guerriers assoiffés. Crachent et hurlent la colère. La colère d’un monde en péril. Que même son créateur ne veut sauver. Crachent et hurlent la haine. La haine qui anime l’Homme. Et qui pervertit nos enfants innocents. Crachent et hurlent. Sous une pluie de mélodies mélancoliques. Les rythmes effrénés d’une dramaturgie inconsolable. Animation de notre quotidien. Belligérance. Mensonge. Chaos. Désolation. Néant. Tanen. Quintet de guerriers assoiffés. End Of A Year

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, punk
Label: Revelation Records, Deathwish Inc, Slave Union, Blacktop Records, Alliance Trax

End of a Year (ex-members of Madeline Ferguson and Burning Bridges) play music in the vein of Fugazi, Rites of Spring, and other mid- 90's revolution summer style DC hardcore bands. If their music doesn't take you back to early/mid 90's DC, their attitude definitely will.

End Of A Year decided that it is possible to be loud and honest while being tuneful. The music became a natural outgrowth of that position - melodic and, at times, pleasant but always gritty and married to a punk sensibility. This is their recorded output so far. On a side note they have a new 7" entitled More Songs About Transportation and Intercourse that will be released soon on Hex records. Definitely a must listen!!! Enjoy.

Fire Team Charlie - Discography (2004-2009)

Country: USA
Genre: Screamo, posthardcore
Label: Adagio 830

Fire Team Charlie (ex-Burned Out Bright & The Walls You Built) was a 3-piece emo/screamo band from Houston, Texas that formed some time in 2004 and recently broke at the end of 2009. Fireteam Charlie played a chaotic, melodic, and epic form of hardcore influenced by City of Caterpillar, Funeral Diner, and Orchid, as well as older 90's Ebullition hardcore bands such as Frail and 400 Years. As far as I know, this is their entire recorded discography. Fans of Drowning With Our Anchors, City of Caterpillar, Funeral Diner, newer Comadre, and Portraits Of Past take note! Enjoy!

HHH - Homo Homini Lupus (1998)

Country: Spain
Genre: Thrash, Fastcore, Crust, Punk
Label: Rumble Records.

-Sergio Colmenar @ Microcritic-

02. Give Me The Sun

COUNTRY: Italy
GENRE: Hardcore.
LABEL: Epidemic Records.

The Smashrooms are a trio based in Brescia, Italy. We play a powerful hardcore influenced by old school sounds and more modern approaches to hardcore. Fast-paced riffs are mixed with rhythmic breaks to create a sound that contains different references but expressed with personality.

Lyrics deal with social and political questions but faced with a personal point of view, analyzing the society and the world we live in, or talk about life experiences. The keyword is to entertain people giving them a message to think about and giving them the possibility to find themselves as authors of a better world. As a band we always believed in a DIY approach to music that can be translated into any aspect of life. We support antifascist realities, against racism, sexism and homophobia. We want hardcore to be a place where principles of the rotten society we live in can't have any effect.

GENRE: Southern Rock, Rock'n'roll, Punk.
LABEL: DIY.

I’ve got some good and bad news. On the positive side ”The Haywire Gospels”, their full length debut album, is an excellent slice of full-on testestorone hardrock raunch. The sad news is that they’re breaking up, which is a damn shame, cause this shit fuckin’ rips like a rhino in heat. ”The Haywire Gospels” kicks off with re-recordings of their 3 track EP (with the same title as the album, a bit confusing) and 8 new tunes which follows the same path of southern stoner rawk and speedy rock’n’roll.

From heavy fat riff-o-rama laced with T.Rex-esque female backing vocals like ”Roundabout Dim” and ”The Single”, to Peter Pan Speedrock-ish amphetamine aggression of ”Unicorn Laura” and ”Long Time Boozin’” (neat handclaps), The Bondage Corporation proves themselves as a tight-as-fuck bluesy metal punk’n’roll machine, completely unlike most Copenhagen acts. The Black Tornado production is crisp, raw and mean, equal to any international outfits, I mean, Black Label Society sounds like a joke compared to this 4-piece! If this becomes their final testament, which it seems like, Denmark will surely miss out on an ultra potent band. Hope you caught ’em when they were around, if not, then this sublime album will make you wish you had. -lowcut-

COUNTRY: USA.
GENRE: Hardcore, Death.
LABEL: Southern Lord.

Southern Lord is beaming with pride as we present you with the debut full length from Seattles' most brutal new band: Black Breath. They are the bastard sons of Motorhead, Autopsy and Discharge on a filth kick of old school punk metal violence! Black Breath recorded this slab of audio terrorism Black Breath with Kurt Ballou (Converge, Trap Them, Disfear) at God City studios in Salem, Massachusetts.

The end result of those monumental sessions is a recording much darker, heavier and more brutal than anything they have done before. The direction of the album contains many of the punk and hardcore influences that were exhibited on the Razor To Oblivion EP (released on cd late last year on Southern Lord).

However, after listening to just five seconds of the albums opening track: Black Sin (Spit On The Cross) its painfully obvious the band has let their Swedish death metal obsession take control! Not since the mid-eighties when bands like Motorhead, Metallica and Poison Idea were giving metal heads bangovers has brutality been so infectious.

Graf Orlock - Destination Time Trilogy (2006-2009)

Country: USA
Genre: hardcore, thrash, metal, grind
Labels: Level plane, Adagio 830

Graf Orlock is a cinema-grind band from California, who weave an intricate mesh of conceptual brutality. Through the vehicle of late '80s and early '90s action films, Graf Orlock create a potent social commentary in a theme that permeates with the band's lyricism and live shows. Destination Time Yesterday, released on level plane records, explores a wide range of critical topics through the medium of concise, intense, and aesthetically rhythmic songs, coming to fruition in a chaotic sensory barrage.

Destination Time Tomorrow is the second installment of Graf Orlock's time bending cinemagrind trifecta, based on an array of cloudily interconnected storylines and contains all of the latent brutality and anger present in Graf Orlock's 1st installment. Destination Time: Tomorrow kicks up the confrontation meter, registering near inflammatory in the realm of requisite nihilism and undeserved sarcasm. On Destination Time: Tomorrow, Graf Orlock continues the so-called "racket" of intensity and life affirming violence synonymously present in the band's first release.

Destination Time today is the third installment of Graf Orlock's "Destination Time" trilogy and continues the band's theme with 13 tracks of harsh, metallic thrashing grind filled with movie references. Enjoy, the movie sound bytes are hilarious at times!

Narrows are comprised of a seasoned cast of musicians: Dave Verellen (Botch, Roy), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Some Girls), Ryan Fredereksen (These Arms Are Snakes), Jodie Cox (Tropics, Bullet Union) and Sam Stothers (Makeout Boys, Quarantine). Narrows pummel the listener with an overdriven/soaked bass, eerie guitar work, brooding drums and a shrapnel laced voice. Narrows prove they are built for the dark lands we live in. In the three remarkable songs contained on Narrow's s/t 7", the band transcends the tired sub-genres of hardcore/punk/metal and leave their own unforgettable musical scar, proving that they are the celebrated past, awe inspiring present, and infectious future of today's heavy music community. The songs on New Distances are anchored by a minimalist punk framework and elaborated by squalls of angular guitar noise, "New Distances" is simultaneously beguiling and dissonant. Helmed by Verellen's signature roar, the resulting compositions owe as much to the early hardcore pioneers as to New York and London's post-punk founders. Terminally bleak, counter-intuitive to the standard rock paradigm, and at odds with everyone. Brutal and highly recommended! Enjoy!

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, punk
Tigershark (ex-TheAssistant, The Setup (USA)) was a 3-piece hardcore band from Richmond, Virginia that existed from 2006-2007. The reason for them breaking up so fast was the unfortunate death of their drummer Jonny Z. during the summer of 2007 at the age of 27. Here's Tigershark's split 10" with South Carolina’s Thank God.(ex members of Antischism, Guyana Punch Line) All members of Thank God’s experience bleed through into their music as they can shift seemlessly from loud screaming chaos to creepy quiet lullabies. Their Southern roots are audible as well with guitar work that almost sounds based in old country music....in a very punk way of course! Tigershark played a downtuned style of Hardcore, punk and noiserock influenced by the Melvins and similar to Akimbo, His Hero Is Gone, and Old Man Gloom. Members of Tigershark currently play in Mouthbreather (see older Posts) Enjoy!

Comadre - Discography (so far) 2004-2009

Country:
USA
Genre: Hardcore, punk, screamo
Label: Bloodtown records, Adaigo830

Comadre is a band from Redwood City, a suburb of San Francisco, California, composed of former members of Heartcrosslove, One's Own Ruin, What Life Makes Us, and Light This City. Their sound is a shoot-off of hardcore and punk, played fast and chaotic with an abundance of energy, but with a large focus on melody and tunefulness as well. Their influences can perhaps best be shown by the covers the band has performed live, by groups such as Rites of Spring, Refused, Kid Dynamite, and Suicide File. Comadre's sound can also be said to incorporate elements of mid-90's screamo played by bands such as Orchid and Saetia.

After playing a handful of shows and releasing a three-song demo under the moniker Coffin, the band changed their name to Comadre in the fall of 2004. The word "comadre," in addition to being loosely translated as "godmother," also is a slang-term for anyone not related by blood to be a part of another's family.

Since their formation, the band has released three LPs and two EPs on their own Bloodtown Recordings, Dood Records, Cosmic Note Records in Japan, and ADAGIO830 Records in Europe, and has extensively toured the United States of America and Japan, in America most commonly with Los Angeles-based cinema-grind band Graf Orlock, and in Japan with hardcore band Endzweck. Here is Comadre's discography so far. One of my favorite bands of the last 6 years to emerge onto the scene. Enjoy!

The mythical and sacred fire-being phoenix lives a thousand years and perishes in flames after building a nest. Few are those who know that the bird leaves behind two eggs — a white one and a black one. From the white a new phoenix hatches, but what might emerge from the black, nobody knows.

Talbot, the duo of Estonian bio-bots from Tallinn is like the black egg of the phoenix — a mystical, menacing enigma that, once cracked, will change the world. Edgy and immediate, the garage-doom-prong of Talbot pierces the listener’s ear and brain like an icicle, puncturing membranes and forever mutilating objective reality. There is something that is really hard to pin down about Meth Teeth, the songs rely on simple ramshackle rhythms, upbeat shiny guitar interplay, and big fat chord churners, and a lot of tambourine banging away on the snare drum. Ultra catchy summertime rockers keep you sad and lonely, and upbeat and hopeful all at once. The lo-fi production of Everything Went Wrong adds a bit of a psychedelic vibe to the garage rock Meth Teeth brings to the table.

In today's world of pacification and placation in the hardcore and punk scenes, Ruiner came screaming out of Baltimore, MD in 2005 and they have not stopped, going from an overlooked band in a city people tend to ignore to being requested to play the most exclusive SXSW showcases. "Hell Is Empty," is a brooding, caustic hardcore punk record - dirty, full of attitude and lyrical wit with a humor not found in most bands. Their sarcastic, clear "fuck you" to the world is well written, powerful and doesn't care if you agree or not. Fans of Modern Life Is War, Give Up The Ghost, and The Suicide File will not be disappointed with this band. Hell is empty is Ruiner's third full length and shows a more polished band beginning to show their true talent in full force. Highly reccommended!!!

I also love the fact that this LP looks like it should be on Ebullition, with it's type writer font insert, two colour cover featuring ancient warfare, and a sweet photo on the back of the band with the singer writhing on the floor. Of course, there is reverance, and there is being a carbon copy. Juvenescent Beat! are clearly in possession of the former, as this LP has so much to offer those that enjoy the good old emo.

The album bounds out of the gate with "I Don't Want to Spend New Year's In A Coma", melodic and forceful with dual vocals setting the scene and occasional spoken parts to spice things up. Yes, this is emo through and through but whilst it'd be all to easy to come off as cheesey and replicated, this album feels utterly fresh and invigorating. The vocals are key to why this works, hoarse, sung / shouted, Rites of Spring is presumably the influence. The sound is pitched somewhere between RoS, Still Life and Life at These Speeds, a little from each decade of emo if you will. Initially there were certain songs that stuck out more for me than others, but given repeated listens this starts to become a cohesive whole, a great listen from beginning to end, but there are spectacular moments such as when "Sad Songs About Rivers and Meadows" bursts out of spoken vocals into it's tumultuous, end of the world finale, blazing away wildly. This is the good shit. Following is "He Used to Rap About the Apocalypse" where the widdly guitar really reminds me of Party of Helicopters, but then it cruises into this emo as fuck chorus where everyone is yelling and falling around. Fucking yes! At times you will be aware that this band is being kind of tongue in cheek (re: that "Sad Songs" title) about the whole emo thing, very much in the same way of I Hate Myself. Tongue can be in cheek at the same time as heart worn on the sleeve. And the lyrics are so classic emo it's ridiculous, bands don't write shit like this any more! Probably as it's not a particularly "cool" thing to be doing. Pick of the LP for me is the wrapper, "It's Not About the Money, It's About the Glory" with a stunning spoken word part that spirals into an utter Native Nod style sobfest of an ending. Brutal.

This is a shit hot LP, if you continue to have any interest at all in emo music, you should be listening to this one. Hop to it. -Collective Zine-

After nearly seven years and numerous mind-bending demos, eps and splits, and a litany of tours criss-crossing the United States and Europe, Richmond, Virginia’s best kept secret THE CATALYST offer up their first full length album, "Swallow Your Teeth", a noisy, mathy, spacey, heavy, feedback-soaked behemoth of sonic destruction. Still channeling a wide range of hardcore, punk, grunge, noise rock, and sludge influences and not afraid to show their love for NIRVANA, FUGAZI, SONIC YOUTH, THE JESUS LIZARD, BORN AGAINST and most of the AMPHETAMINE REPTILE back catalog, "Swallow Your Teeth" displays the band’s creative prowess and power fully matured and realized. Definitely worth the wait and highly recommended by this writer. I couldn't do justice at describing this band, so I used the label's description instead. Enjoy!

For the better part of the decade, San Francisco's Ludicra has cultivated a well-deserved reputation as one of the finest and most forward-thinking bands in the contemporary underground metal scene. The Tenant, the band's fourth album, finds Ludicra at the height of it's musical prowess. Possibly their most metal-sounding release yet (thanks in no small part to some infectious Metallica-esque dual guitar harmonics), the record also features a strong progressive edge reminiscent of 2006's Fex Urbis Lex Orbis--not to mention a return of the raw, punk-inflected black metal vibe with which the band first made their name. It is bound to be one of the most memorable releases of 2010.

Slices is a hardcore/punk band from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania featuring members of Brainhandle and Warzone Womyn who play a dirty style of hardcore/punk similar to bands such as Sex Vid, Pissed Jeans, and Crossed Out. After two solid 7"s, Slices deliver with their first full length titled Cruising. Unlike many other bands who play this style of music, Slices have delivered the goods with their debut full length. A definite must for fans of Sex Vid and Brainhandle, and Black Flag.

The easy of way of starting this review would be to say if you're going to name your band Cojones, the music better have some balls. That sort of line writes itself. The honest way, however, would be to point out that if you're going to bequeath your group with a name as ridiculous as Cojones, then you better have the music to transcend it.

Compared to other recent face palmers like Boners Inc and Chinese, Cojones does indeed deliver. Hell, in some weird alternate universe where a name like Cojones is considered the norm, Cojones would still leave an impression. Like fellow Croats in Stonebride, this four-piece takes a traditional stoner rock template and metals it up, but not to the point where it thuds instead of grooves. Opening number “Clearing Potion,” with its direct Kyuss lineage, is as good an example as any. The riffs are as desert rock as they get, but there's still a brawny heft in the delivery. That seems to be par for the course with the current crop of European stoner rock, but the difference between Cojones and their EU peers is that these guys don't have an eye on the arena. There are hooks, but they aren't the obvious ones and they're never delivered with big flourishes. Another plus for them is a singer who can sing – none of that throat-full-of-glass bellowing here (although that's not to say that guitarist/vocalist Bojan Kocijan is incapable of letting loose a roar or two, as is the case on “Dreamlounge,” which at times reminded me of psychedelic sludge cretins Ichabod).

There aren't any musical surprises to Sunrise - stoner rock is as stoner rock does – but it's still well executed and is about a good debut as they come. Hell, I'd go so far as to say it's a ballsy release. For the traditionalists, this one comes recommended. -StonerRock.com-

FuzzTown Records is amped to announce the signing of psychedelic dirge metal vagabonds WHEN THE DEADBOLT BREAKS...Their devastating new release," The Last Day of Sun", is a double CD that promises to be the darkest and most musically evolved CD this cult of nomads has released to date.

This collection marks the next two twisted chapters in the audio mind-fuck of producer/vocalist/guitarist Aaron Lewis. The band (rounded out by Mike Connor on drums, Jon Harrison on Guitars and Roman Garbacik on bass & vocals), brings new levels of aggression to the songwriting all the while bathing "The Last Day Of Sun" with endless depths of low-end riffage and trippy psychedelia.

"This is an album of enormous heaviness, the likes of which have not been seen since early Neurosis. This band seems to have an unlimited amount of anguish to draw upon" -Jon Zevon of UnderGroundMetal.com-

"When The Deadbolt Breaks is Ugly yet beautiful in their musical despair. At times lulling you into a false sense of serenity only to have that ripped away from you leaving you feeling like you've been assaulted or mugged, probably both" -Paul Ryen of TrueMetal.net

“The way of the South" has resonated through southern music for generations and “the way”, it seems, for southern metal bands is often raw, to-the-point, unfiltered expression; unflinching delivery oozing with conviction. The southern bands just mean it a bit more. And in that tradition, like EYEHATEGOD and BUZZOV*EN before them, RWAKE f**king "mean it" and don’t care what you think.

Just over ten years ago RWAKE started out as a four brothers jamming to kill time, 'cause in Arkansas that's all you have...time. And in time those brothers were joined by other brothers (and a sister) and recorded some tracks their first material in September of ’97.

A “real” first demo, Xenoglossalgia: The Last Stage of Awareness, followed shortly as well as a slew of shows throughout the deep south, including their first ventures outside their home state of Arkansas.

In December of ’99, RWAKE recorded their first full-length album with TODAY IS THE DAY’s Steve Austin. For reasons buried by the sands of time, the record never saw a proper release and was mostly distributed by the band while on tour via hand-scrawled CD-R’s.

RWAKE spent the next few years stringing together shows throughout the Eastern US, developing their overwhelming, cathartic live performances in sweltering warehouses, stuffy basements, and any backwoods DIY show (indoors or out) that would have ‘em.

By 2002, RWAKE recorded what would become their first properly released full-length, Hell Is The Door To The Sun. Hell Is The Door... was the sound of a band with a purpose. Less a record than an hour-long summoning of personal demons and primal fury, Hell Is the Door… put RWAKE firmly on the radar of heavy music connoisseurs. ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY took the band on its first proper North American tour in support of Hell Is The Door… and gave RWAKE a platform to expose its ugliness for all to see.

Two years of writing and touring culminate in 2004 with RWAKE entering Volume Studios (PELICAN, MINSK, UNEARTHLY TRANCE) with long-time friend Sanford Parker of MINSK to record the full-length album ‘If You Walk Before You Crawl You Crawl Before You Die’. ‘If You Walk…’ was released via At A Loss Records and full on bled the sonic hostility the band had become know for. The band hit the road extensively again; including a run with WEEDEATER and spots shows with the likes of MASTODON, HIGH ON FIRE, The HIDDEN HAND, MEATJACK, and many more over the years.

In January ‘06, RWAKE signed with Relapse and that spring made their first appearance as a label artist at the heralded SXSW Music Festival. In one of the most talked-about sets of SXSW ‘06 RWAKE aired out a host of new material that left a trail of slack jaws and blown minds in its wake. Just a few short months later and the band was back in Parker’s Volume Studios to lay that material to tape in the shape of it’s new record Voices of Omens.

Voices of Omens hits below the bible-belt with thick, tar-black riffing, vicious male/female howls and leads so sweet you'd think they're from Georgia. Instead thisArkansas band represents their dirty south with their intensely unique style of acid-drenched metal. Voices of Omens is a hostile explosion of hideously impure American metal which emanates an eerie and unsettling vibe; haunting in atmosphere and hallucinogenic in it's effect on the listener.

Voices of Omens is set for a February 2007 international release date. RWAKE will hit the road in April with long-time friends MINSK for an Eastern US tour before beginning an extensive Voices of Omens world tour throughout 2007 and 2008.

Reznik - El Mal (2009)

Country: Spain
Genre: Sludge, Punk, Pop, Instrumental
Label: Alone Records.
