Locomotora - Locomotora (2009)

1. Shopping Music For Bloody Wallets
2. Anarchophobia
3. Teignmouth Electron
4. Minipax
5. Older Than Dreams

Country: Finland
Genre: Instrumental/Post-rock
Label: Sordo music

Recomendable.

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Stoner, Psychedelic.
Label: Television Records

As some of you may have seen, I already posted the 3 song preview to this album, if you didnt, shame on you because this is a great band doing rad and unique shit. Cower is able to seamlessly combine the grooves and tones of stoner rock legends "Sleep", the attitude and energy of punk, and the dirty heaviness of crust. While what they do sounds very familiar, it is at the same time something extremely fresh and exciting. Also something I really appreciate about this record is that Cower takes risk. They change up their vocal style on songs, experiment with many different ideas and have a badass acoustic song -circling the drain-

2. Grissecon
3. Prometheus
4. Another World Is Inevitable
5. Summit Revisited
6. Voices In The Wilderness

Country: USA
Genre: metal, doom
Label: Southern Lord

Wow, this album threw me for a loop! Track one starts off with a blast beat and slowly incorporates a great mixture of melody and atmospheric sensibilities. Summit is the best thing Thou has put out to date. The band is really starting to turn into their own mammoth monstrocity, and from a riff and songwriting perspective they really took it to the next level with Summit. I was really impressed with the melody and atmosphere in Summit's music. Definitely a standout for this genre of music. Fans of Envy, Sunn O))), and Boris take note.

ANGEL EYES - Midwestern [2010]

01. Part One
02. Part Two
03. Part Three
04. Part Four

COUNTRY: Chicago. Illinois, U$A
GENRE: Post Metal , Atmospheric Sludge
LABEL: Mylene Sheath - Underground Communique - Concubine

In a day when metal and hardcore has an endless litany of sub-genres taggedon it left and right, Chicago, IL's ANGEL EYES effortlessly and boldly defygenre classification and simple explanation. Midwestern, their newestcreation, is an album of moral indignation, a call to arms in a decliningeconomy. It's relatable to any of us that have struggled and fought andclawed over these past few years only to end up having to struggle harder inthe end, with no end to the worrying in sight.

Apocalyptic in scope, Midwestern is a four part movement of brutal realismthat plays over in your head long after listening. The sounds resonate, thelyrics and vocals disturb, and the intention is honest and personal. There'sstill a comfort and hope in the unsettling atmosphere that the album conjuresup, however, because it is comforting to know that others feel this way andwe are not alone in the desolate struggle ahead. If you combine the catharticnature of mid-'90s hardcore acts such as His Hero Is Gone and In/Humanity,with the contemporary sludge of Neurosis and the atmospheric elements ofGodspeed You Black Emperor, toss in an unhealthy, complete and utterobsession with Ennio Morricone's soundtracks to the Sergio Leone spaghettiwesterns of the '60s & '70s (in fact, the bands' name,"ANGEL EYES" isactually taken from the name of Lee Van Cleef's totally badass character in"The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly"), then you're starting to get an idea ofwhat Midwestern sounds like.

01. Gintro
02. The Good Harvest
03. Tommy Love is Not Gay
04. Grin Diesel
05. Eliminator Boat Duel
06. Goomba (With Wings)

Country: Canada
Genre: Hardcore, Math, Noise Rock, Experimental.
Label: Bart Records & Revolution Winter

Midway through their final set at the Bart Records showcase for Sled Island 2010, Fuck the Tundra’s hyperactive frontman pushed the crowd back, tucked to his toes and hucked a massive flat ground back flip. That gymnastic feat was impressive enough, yet it was still overshadowed by a pitch-perfect performance of all six songs from their debut cassette, one of this year’s most jaw dropping releases. Throughout Grin Diesel’s succinct 16 minutes, the quartet tears into 31G-style post-hardcore with pulse quickening drum fills, spidery dueling guitars and mathematical change-ups, all peppered with their bizarre sense of humor. Most surprising is the serenely summery yet still mathy instrumental “Eliminator Boat Duel,” an ear-pleasing interlude amidst the chronicles of ridiculous. -weird canada-

Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Hardcore
Formed in Chicago in 2003 by guitarist Chuck French and bassist Neil Keener (both former members of Planes Mistaken For Stars), Git Some has morphed into the lean and mean Denver-based quartet that it is today. Loose Control is their sophomore release following 2008’s Cosmic Rock (1-2-3-4 Go! Records). French and Keener take the raw-edged guitar and bass tones and riffs for which Planes Mistaken For Stars was well known and render them spikier and more rhythmically intense. Vocalist Lucius Fairchild balances soulful wails and harsh screams; his approach works well with lyrics that avoid broad statements on politics / society in favor of inward looks at a complex, dark and often disturbing personal inner landscape. Drummer Andrew Lindstrom’s solid but constantly shifting foundation delivers beats that underline the structure of each song, and intense fills that contribute a sense of spontaneity and surprise.

Forgotten Live in Death Paradise is a music project created in 2008 by Rafael Simmons in São Paulo, Brazil. Influenced specially by Nine Inch Nails, Frozen Silence, 65daysofstatic and God is an Astronaut the project was initially intended to be a form to transform stories on songs, but and as the project growth, it became a piece of personal experiences and feelings.

Rafael Simmons is the only member and already worked on other musical projects and local brazilian bands, but made Forgotten Live in Death Paradise his main and only musical project, as the others went on a hiatus or broken up.

The first song ever released under the FLiDP name was “One Way Ticket to the Paradise” (that later became the name of the project’s debut album) and Nara, that was released at myspace some months later showing a significant different style than the first song and then the project’s went on a long break. It returned with the debut album release at June, 2009 as a free download.” -TheSirensSound-

When asked for comment on Matador, ZOROASTER guitarist / vocalist Will Fiore dished, “As a whole, these are the strongest songs we've ever put together and they really encompass everything we've done until now as a band. There are some really heavy, slow creepers and some of the faster, more driving songs. The new material ranges from really aggressive to more melodic and trippy.” “It’s going to be a pretty straight-forward rock album and I think it’s what we wanted to create with both ‘Dog Magic’ and ‘Voice of Saturn’ rolled into one,” offers drummer Dan Scanlan. “There will be a lot of shorter tracks that are very straight forward and hard-hitting — it’s a lot less of a droning record than what people are expecting. The album title "Matador" sums up the feel of the album perfectly. It's an "epic" sort of title; strong and powerful, but graceful.”

ZOROASTER, the Atlanta-based group who has been called "one of the U.S.'s most promising metal bands" while drawing stark comparisons to Godflesh, Sleep and the Melvins, formed in Atlanta, GA in 2003 out of the need for “sedation by high volumes and low frequencies". ZOROASTER has met to shining praise from metal and indie rock press alike, receiving shining accolades for its deafening power, intriguing mysticism, use of left-of-center instrumentation (which has included Moog synths, Theremins, ominous vocal choirs and even brass sections) and unique take on heavy music. ZOROASTER’s live show has been described as "an obliteration of the senses", earning the three piece the title of “Atlanta’s loudest band".

Please Inform The Captain This Is A Hijack - Discography

Country: USA

Genre: Hardcore, punk, screamo

Please Inform The Captain This Is A Hijack were a punk, hardcore, screamo band from CA featuring Mike Kirsch of Bread & Circuits, Fuel, Torches To Rome, Sawhorse, Fuel, and John Henry West along with Jake, Max and Alex from Former Members of Alfonsin and Q Factor, Rich from Dirty Dirt and The Dirts, Felix from Life’s Halt, and Josh Peach on slide projector and sound effects. Please Inform The Captain This Is A Hijack is a theatrical combination of music and politics, with a sound that is a rough and rumble synthesis of Former Members of Alfonsin and Bread & Circuits. During their time as a band they only released one self-titled six track EP (on 12” vinyl), but 2006 sees the release of a “lost” album, ‘Defeat Or Humiliate The United States Of America’ on Clean Plate records. Members went on to play in Baader Brains and From Monuments To Masses. I especially enjoy the sound bites and samples used with this band's music. Enjoy!

Reaching Away formed in 2009 from the remains of The Pine, who are currently on a five year indefinite hiatus a la Fugazi. Reaching Away pick up where The Pine Left off and play 90's influence emo rock similar to bands such as The Hated and Evergreen. Reaching Away continue with a similar dark and somber style found with the Pine, but incorporate more of a mellow, acoustic, almost folky sound than ever before. Lyrically and stylistically, Reaching Away keep the Evergreen and Hated sound, but also add a folk tinge seen played by bands such as Pygmy Lush. Push Away The Moon is a great debut lp from Reaching Away and shows a natural progression from the music played by the Pine. Highly recommended! Pick up a copy while there are copies left. Once upon a time... in a saturday night of the year 2005, all drank, musical projects flourishing. Always gone the day after, but here is the exception... the morning after, enthusiasm rose with the courage to put this close to reality.

At the beginning, 3 guys with the will to do something altogether and to share it with 2 or more guests on every track.

After this being swallowed and to insure that the project will reach its goal, we established some rules:
- To compose all tracks through only one practic e
- Nevermind the comparisons to any other band existing
- Never do a gig (difficult with 20 people!)
- Forget about what we are individually used to
- Reach completion in about a year
- Try to include guests playing instruments we are unfamiliar with
- Not to take time from all our respective and guests' bands
- To use only one lyric divided into all tracks
- To try to play another instrument in at least one track
- and the major rule is having fun!

Slowly showing the summer of 2006, all atrcks composed and carefully saved on a mobile hard drive, for the sake of not forgetting every single note.
Everything has been ok until then... but the biggest part of the job has to be done... every track has to be recorded closely to what it's been saved on the hard drive. Time ran against us.

July 2006: Mouffi opened the doors of his studio. Same old shit: drums takes, bass, guitars then guests' overdubs...

The process went on until mid-october of the same year with the crazy will to release this project out of the studio... Good news because Fred from Basement Apes Ind. who is participating in this project seems to more than willing to make our dream reality.

Here we are now, july 2009, at last! The cd is out and kicking!
Another good news, you can see 4 names on the left side of this page which corresponds to an all new band, easily named PRACTICAL WEAPON. That's the aim of this profile to present this band coming from the bowels if this outstanding project adn from the ashes of SPINNING HEADS and SUPERSTATIC REVOLUTION. GOODBYE DIANA being assuredly more than alive.
See you later!

True If Destroyed-S/T +Demo (2004)

Country: USA
Genre: Posthardcore, Emo, Indie Rock.
Label: Ed Walters Records

True If Destroyed was a posthardcore, indie band from Philadelphia, PA with a variety of influences and sounds that complemented and contrasted each other, which resulted in a unique form of posthardcore and indie rock. True If Destroyed featured melodic guitars that reflect a deep appreciation for mid-'80s DC bands like Rain, Soulside and Rites of Spring. Front woman Julia Gaylord's vocals, meanwhile, take a suspiciously angelic foil to the busy instrumentation, invoking the air--if not a revisitation--of an idealistic pocket of mid-'90s basement groups a la Discount, Current or Evergreen, or The Pine. Cloud Mouth

Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Hardcore, 9o's screamo
Label: Init records, Ice Age records.

Cloud Mouth are a relatively new band from Chicago, IL who play punk/hardcore, 90's screamo. The first thing that struck me when listening to Cloud Mouth is the passion and intensity of the music played by these guys. I'm hard pressed to describe Cloud Mouth, but could definitely hear influences from 90's era screamo bands such as City of Caterpillar, The Fiction, as well as newer bands such as ...Who Calls So Loud and Drowning With Our Anchors. Upon listening further, I also hear some post-rock and dirty, grunge influenced noise rock a la The Catalyst as well. I've posted Cloud Mouth's discography here, which includes their 2008 ep, their Freak, Psych, Fuck cassette, and their split 7" with Cougar Den to give these guys some intenational exposure. Keep an eye out for these up and comers. They'll only get better with time. I've also included their upcoming 12" entitled That Ghost Is Always With Me. This is Cloudmouth's strongest material to date. That Ghost Is With Me is scheduled for release later this month. Pick yourself up a copy. You won't be disappointed!

THE NEW ENEMY"Outsourced EP"
Narrowing the list to 5 original songs and a Kid Dynamite cover, THE NEW ENEMY enlisted Canadian punk luminary Simon Head (SNFU, Closet Monster) to produce their CD debut, "Outsourced EP". Recording with Head over spare evenings and weekends in Toronto, the EP came together with fervor and persistence. THE NEW ENEMY wanted a fresh set of ears for mastering, and found them in Michael Dominici (Joni Mitchell, Mos Def) at Music House

Mastering in NYC.THE NEW ENEMY"Shakedown EP"
Building on the sound from their first release, while sticking to their roots, "Shakedown EP" was produced by Simon Head (SNFU, Closet Monster), mastered by Nick Zampiello (Against Me, Converge), and features artwork by acclaimed French artist Dominique Sinibaldi.

Vaccine is a 4 piece hardcore supergroup from Western Ma. (USA) featuring Will Killingsworth (Orchid, Ampere, Failures, etc),Matt Swift (Relics), Matt McKeown, Joe Shumsky (Glue). Human Hatred is the follow up to Vaccines self titled 2009 demo. Vaccine do not disappoint with their debut 7" and bring 10 tracks of in-your-face, intense, no frills, blistering, hardcore, that is powerful enough to kill small animals within a twelve mile radius when played at loud volume. Human Hatred features ten songs in just about 4 minutes. Anyone who has ADD or is a fan of powerviolence should check this band out. While you're at it order a copy of the 7" for yourself when it is available from Painkiller records. (Damn, there should be a disclaimer label that comes with the 7" warning people to not listen to this 7" when stuck in traffic, because it induces roadrage).

1. Floorboards
2. Greenland

3. Buddy System
4. Sixty Acres
5. Meat Wave
6. Safety Jobs

Country: USA
Genre: Indie, posthardcore, emo
Label: Radical Friends

Caravels is a 5-piece band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Caravels play an interesting mix of posthardcore, 90's screamo, and indie/emo. This band was a pleasant surprise for me that shows lots of potential. A good way to describe the band is to picture City of Caterpillar and Portraits of Past mixed with hardcore/posthardcore bands such as Botch, Kill Sadie, and These Arms Are Snakes. Highly recommended and worth checking out. Overall, a solid ep from Caravels! I can't wait for a full length!

Dolcim-We Carry The Fire Lp (2010)

A1. Eyewitness Account
A2. Horace And Jacqueline (94 and 86, Retired)
A3. Claire (31, Advertising)
A4. Sam (7, Secong Grade)
B1. Advanced Civilization
B2. Richard (54, Priest)
B3. Jonas (19, Store Clerk)
B4. Sarah (29, Mother)
B5. Xavier (35, Artist)

Country: USA
Genre: Posthardcore, Screamo
Label: React With Protest

Dolcim contain two members that were in Tennesee's own Cease Upon The Capitol, forming soon after CUTC broke up in 2007. Dolcim continue where CUTC left off, but add dynamic, whirling guitars and a bit more melody . We Carry The Fire is Dolcim's follow-up to their debut LP Guillotine Ride. We Carry The Fire stays interesting throughout, lasting a little over a half hour and never veering in style, but that's fine by me. We Carry Fire is going to be in my top ten of the year and is a really solid screamo record. The songs contained on We Carry Fire are intense and the vocals are a particular strong point in my opinion. All in all, We Carry Fire is a solid record worth checking out if you like chaotic but melodic emo.

01. Initation

03. Place of skulls
04. In the devils snare

Country: USA

Daleth is a one man band featuring J. Merrill (ex-Noah's Apathy, Rowdy Towdy, Esteem, City of Liars, Asthmatics, and more). Using only one microphone, songs are constructed recording random drum tracks. The tracks are then pieced together to create complete songs. These blown-out, heavy sludge songs are heavily influenced by FLOOR, KYLESA, DOVE, and even TORCHE.

Label: Vitriol, NuestraLengua, Penguin Suit, Great Plains, Ethnospine Noise, Medical Abuse, Young Summer, Allergic To Fun Records

Maladie, From Tijuana, Mexico play an interesting mix of punk, 90's era screamo, and hardcore. Maladie sounds like a mix between Ekkaia and older La Quiete. Maladie's intensity bring to mind bands such as Comadre, Dangers, and European bands such as Trainwreck and Zann. The lyrics on this record are sung in both Spanish and English. Angular/ jagged guitars with rapid fire drumming make this band a standout and a pleasant surprise. I also included the band's self titled 7" as both the lp and 7" are available to download for free from the Maladie's own Nuestra Lengua records. Enjoy!
