Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Hardcore, Crust, Metal
Label: React With Protest, self released

Hammers are a UK hardcore band who play d-beat/crust punk in the His Hero Is Gone Tragedy, and Integrity school of music. Their myspace page states "too punk to be metal, to metal to be punk" and I think that pretty much covers where Hammers are coming from with their music. Anyway, fans of Alphinist, Cursed, Zann, and Maladie take note. I can't wait for their split 12" with Alphinist, which should be relased later this year. Here's Hammers complete redcorded output so far. All downloads provided via Hammers bandcamp page. Included on the site is Hammers-Orogeny 12", Year One cassette discography, and split 7" with Dolcim. Enjoy!

Label: Southern Lord

The Secret come to life as an output for rage, darkness and negativity. The Secret combines elements of crust/grind, primitive black metal, dark soundscapes and monolithic riffs to take the listener by the hand through an hallucinated trip towards a foggy and yet invisible tomorrow. After their 2003 Goodfellow Records debut album “Luce”, the band goes through countless line up changes and finds its own new incarnation in 2008 when their second full length “Disintoxication” was released. Since then The Goodfellow label has unfortunately ceased to exist. The Secret have now found shelter within Southern Lords’ bleak caves. The Solve Et Coagula album was recorded by Kurt Ballou (Trap Them, Converge, Cursed.) at his infamous Godcity studios. Definitely essential for sick fiends into raw, true, filthy crust. their sonic interpretation of a total loss of faith in social system, religion, personal redemption and every institution. You are forewarned of a approaching monolithic steamroller whose destiny is to flatten all in its path!

Rorcal - Heliogabalus (2010)

01. Heliogabalus (70:16)

Country: Swiss
Genre: Post Metal, Doom Metal
Label: Cal of Ror, Division, Urgence Disck

RORCAL sees the light in Geneva (Switzerland) in 2006.After four efforts between 2007 and 2008 and about fifty shows through Europe, the band is now ready to release its fifth block :HELIOGABALUS. This one marks a radical change in the band’s music. Obsessively dark and heavy, this 70 minutes monolithic piecesees RORCAL sink deeper into the abysses of sound.Somewhere between Drone and Doom, let yourself go into the bowels of the whale.

Going right out of inferno, HLGBLS is a 70 minutes song which illustrates the decadence of the Roman emperor, Heliogabalus. This time Rorcal is going ways further than before, with crushing doom parts, including long hellish droning fields. This album is scary, really aggressive, completely gloomy. Be sure, you never heard something like that, and you never will.If you’re looking for something really extreme, this is exactly what you need.

Kowloon Walled City - Discography (2008-2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Sludge Metal, Posthardcore, Noise rock.
San Francisco CA's Kowloon Walled City play an amazing mixture of Posthardcore, noiserock, and sludge that brings to mind early 90's AM-Rep bands, Unsane, and hardcore bands such as Coalesce, and Botch. Kowloon Walled City sound dirty, electric, almost fuzzy at times. Their mishmash of sounds make the band difficult to pigeonhole at times. Not quite metal, not quite stoner rock, not quite hardcore, and not quite noise rock. The end result is a great listen that fits in well with the sound currently played by bands such as Grids, Walls, and Tideland. Fans of these bands take note! All downloads are provided for free via the band's website. Do yourself a favor and give these guys a listen and while your at it buy some records. You won't be disappointed!

Their new 13-song full-length, "Species Bender," is proof of all the great progress they've made as a band and will firmly plant them alongside the genre's best. Fans of Dillinger Four, Fucked Up, Hot Water Music, Black Flag, Against Me!, Naked Raygun and No Idea Records style bands take note! ColorChromatic is a three piece Postpunk, posthardcore, and Indie Rock band from California who play a hard to describe form of postpunk and "screamo" with hints of funk and jazz. I guess a good way to describe this band is newer postpunk/screamo bands such as Calculator, Moldar, 1994!, and Laurtec mixed with elements of bands such as Refused, !!!, or later era At The Drive-In. Definitely a breath of fresh air in this genre of music. The fact that I'm at a loss for words in describing this band is a plus!!! Check ColorChromatic out and come to your own conclusion. All I can say is that I wish there were more bands like ColorChromatic out there that weren't afraid to push the envelope in the current "screamo" scene. Arts is an American Raw Black Metal band featuring members of Haxan, Ancestors & Hallow amongst others. Shrouded in ethereal night exists a fire abounding in phantasms. This is a flame that speaks of Initiation and Consecration as a veritable heritage of destiny. Herein, reflecting back into itself, this luminescence serves as the lone sanctuary of divine thought on the part of the profane where it cannot be seized by non-believers. That the glorious fire of revelation is diffused in accordance with supreme reason is proof that God does not enlighten the world by means of meteors and flashes, but chooses to remain concealed in his own sepulchral sleep. I haven't heard this yet, but felt an obligation to post after seeing that members of this band also play in Ancestors and Hallow, two amazing bands on the incredible Youth Attack records, as always, Arts is shrouded in the mystery of current Youth Attack bands. If I were a betting man, I'd say that one of the main culprits involved would be Mark McCoy (Hallow, Failures, Das Oath, etc.). Judging by the pedigree of the band members involved, expect punishing, dark, heavy as hell music that should not be ignored. Unfortunately, the album tracks aren't split, so you get side one and side two, not individual song tracks. Links provided by the always kick ass Toxicbreed's Funhouse. Enjoy!

Born Anew started in 2005 founded by axemen Janek and Piotrek who teamed up with vocalist Mycha and after a couple of months, Krzysiek (drums) and then Seba (bass). The process of line up shaping and songwriting made the band play their very first show and record a demo only in early 2008. It has really snowballed since then, as the same year they made it to the studio again to have their debut full length out (on Spooky Records, March 2009) and played countless shows all over Poland. The beginning of 2010 brought changes, as Born Anew parted ways with Mycha and Krzysiek. Former guitarist Piotrek took up the vocal duties and the new drummer is Arek (Coalition/Sunrise/Daymares). Refreshed and rejuvenated, the band is currently rehearsing like crazy, getting ready to record new EP and hit the road soon.

I know what you’re thinking: “this is just a Milemarker side project under a different name.” Foo on you, fool. Challenger is a new thing, a bold reformation featuring members of another band you love. Yes, the backbone of punk powerhouse Milemarker, Dave Laney and Al Burian, are here. You trust their voices like your momma trusts Peter “Lazy Eye” Jennings. Their respective ‘zines, Dave’s Media Reader and Al’s Burn Collector, have stimulated your brain stem with words of wisdom and intrigue for years. Their live shows have inspired you and your friends to put out freshly lit cigarettes on your arms and drive recklessly and start your own bands after guzzling bottles of generic brand cough syrup (Jade Tree Bio.).

Challenger was one of my favorite bands that formed from the ashes of Milemarker. The best thing about this band was Al Burian's lyrics. Burian's lyrics read like one of his zine entries or book collections. Full of all the sarcasm and wit you came to expect from Burn Collector. In my opinion, Challenger were one of the best bands to be released by Jade Tree. To describe the music itself, picture Rites of Spring mixed with 90's ebullition style hardcore bands and you'll begin to get the picture. Enjoy!

DYSFUNCTIONAL KID is a punk rock four-piece hailing from Heerlen, the Netherlands. Dysfunctional Kid started out as a one man project in 2006 by Nick but grew to three members fully participating in 2008. The band existed of Nick on vocals and guitar, Marl on bass and vocals and Levi on drums. The band started playing live shows in 2009 and they quickly built a small fan base in their hometown. Pat, an old friend of Nick, owned a studio and offered to record some songs that later went on a split CD with Gino’s Eyeball, released on Kickass Records in July 2009. The band played lots of shows in their first year and met some great people and bands. In January of 2010 long time friend Erik joined the band on additional guitar and vocals completing the band’s line up. During the summer of 2010, the band headed back to Pat’s home based studio to record 6 brand new songs that appear on their new EP: Nothing New. A European tour through such countries like Spain, France, Portugal and Belgium followed to promote the disc. Their music can be best described as melodic punk rock with both pop punk and hardcore edges and easy singalongs. This being said; Dysfunctional Kid guarantees a punk rock show full of energy and music that comes straight from their hearts. These guys sure know how to rock!

Country: Germany
Genre: Hardcore
Hailing from Germany, Zann have been playing chaotic, brutal, and punishing hardcore for 10 years now. X captures Zann's intensity, brutality, and energy. Zann has been influenced by 90's hardcore bands like Unbroken, Acme, Rorschach, yet keep things fresh and continue to have a unique sound of their own. Over the years, Zann has developed an international reputation for their no-nonsense style of hardcore. Zann continue to inspire me in a time where hardcore music in general can be a stagnant genre of music populated by thugs and people who are into style and not the substance of this subculture we embrace as punk rock. Fans of Ghostlimb, Perth Express, Cursed, Trainwreck, and Trap Them take note. Do yourself a favor and pick up the 7" through protagonist music. Genre: Sludge, Hardcore, Noise Rock, Doom Metal.
Label: Headwrecker Records, De Graanrepubliek, IFB Records.

"And So Our Troubles Began" is a new six-song 12" EP (co-released by Headwrecker Records, De Graanrepubliek, and IFB Records) that marks my first exposure to Dublin, Ireland's Drainland. The band cites some of their primary influences as Dystopia, Cattlepress, Unruh, and Godflesh, and you can definitely hear that in their approach – which reminds me of a somewhat stripped down Dystopia with some of that loose, noisy guitar work you'd associate with Godflesh's earlier work. Expect a multi-vocal attack over loads of churning riffs where gnarled, dissonant guitars interact with massive pulses of sludgy bass in the form of everything from slow, pounding rhythms to quick bursts of grinding speed. And then there's also "The Scouring Process", which comes across as more of a surprisingly effective two-minute assault of power electronics. Part of me wishes the recording was a little more blatantly heavy and in your face, but at the same time the rugged sense of space they've got going on here does allow for some nice flourishes of texture, so it does add character aesthetically. I'm really diggin' this. The songwriting is strong, the diversity makes sense, and the overall feeling/atmosphere is right on the money. Great work. -Aversionline-

Country: Canada
Genre: Punk, Postpunk
After 3 critically acclaimed 7"s (two of which on Deranged) and a slight line up change, Vancouver, Canada's White Lung deliver one fantastic debut album. White Lung mix the punk venom of some of the more notorious riot grrrl bands of the 90's with the guitar noodling and tempo of UK post punk by way of John Reis (Hot Snakes, Rocket From The Crypt, Nightmarchers, Drive Like Jehu, etc.) and you get something pretty close to White Lung. White Lung's debut Lp really caught my attention. Try picturing bands like Sick Lipstick mixed with older Estranged and you'll begin to get the picture. Kudos to Deranged records for putting out so many great records as of late!!! Enjoy.

06. War Veteran

Country: UK
Genre: Shoegaze, Noise Rock, Industrial.
Label: A War With False Noise

First full-length album by this Glasgow-based post-goth trio, and one of my absolute favourite At War releases ever! Building on their two-track CDr on Kovorox from a couple of years ago, Vom have come out with a much more attractive proposition than the metal/krautrock hybrid which was going on there; this album is much more focussed, dark and heavy. In fact it's as brooding and dripping with dark atmosphere as anything I've heard released in ages. Like a hybrid of Scream-era Siouxsie And The Banshees, early X-Mal Deustchland and the first Killing Joke LP, with vocals buried deep in the mix and heavily distorted (think Ramleh's early post-PE stage), Vom reference a lot of music yet sound nothing like you've ever heard. Total intensity and they deserve to be huge; hopefully this will be the first step on the jourey.

Touche Amore/Make Do And Mend-Split 7" (2010)

1. Touche Amore-Smoke Signals
2. Touche Amore-Hideaways
3. Make Do And Mend-Hand me downs
4. Make Do And Mend-Cobwebs

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Emo
Los Angeles, CA based Touche Amore play hardcore that mixes the sounds of classic "screamo" bands such as Orchid and Hot Cross with more traditional hardcore bands such as American Nightmare or Verse along with touches of punk similar to bands like Jawbreaker. CT's own Make Do And Mend are from my neck of the woods and bring a sound that's melodic, fierce, and capture a punk rock sound that brings to mind bands like Hot Water Music, Polar Bear Club, and Small Brown Bike. This latest ep from both bands provide the listener with both band's best material to date. Please support the bands and pick up this excellent split 7". Enjoy. On a side note, members of Touche Amore play in Deadhead as well, an equally intense band with more of a crusty punk edge to their sound, which was also posted earlier in this blog. Check out their self titled 12".

NJ's Black Kites feature members of In First Person and play a chaotic, dark, and intense style of hardcore that teeters on the edge of a complete molecular meltdown. Fans of the band's previous releases will be floored by these 9 songs. Black Kites provide the listener with an emotionally devastating assault both lyrically and aurally. This record is Black Kite's second full length, released after the equally good split LP the band did with NYC's Swallowed up, and represents the band's strongest material to date. Songs Written While Things Were Changing demands your attention. I can't even begin to tell you how good this album is. Fans of In First Person, Trap Them, Mind Eraser, Maladie and all things dark and heavy take note! Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this release. You won't be disappointed!

BROKEN BEANS is a one-man-band, DIY and non-profit. it's fun, baby! here's my one-man-band, kind of a solo-project: after years of singing in hardcore/punkbands and hanging out in dirty practicerooms, i try to do something completely different. i think, it's still punkrock, but only the attitude. for me, punk means to do whatever you like and this is why i started my own soloproject. i'm not professional and i'm no perfectionist, my guitar riffs and lyrics are lousy, my english is horrible, it's punk, baby! never learned playing any kind of instrument, i'm totally amateur. i'll never be a rockstar, cause everybody would laugh at me seeing my face on stage, concentrated on the strings like a 6 year old child doing a skill exercise with my tongue out at the mouth-angle wearing glasses to see the strings i play. singing in bands always was fun, but it takes so much time doing the rehearsals, working on songs with different bandmembers and different ideas and so on...i'm now 38 years old, it's time to get off the stage and let the kids do the action. that's why i tried out homerecording. no livegigs, i promise. this is only for fun, hoping that someone likes it too. DIY is and ever was my philosophy and if i worked out my recordings, the songs would be downloadable for free. homerecording kills the music industry.

Jakuzi's Attempt - III EP (2010)

1. Whisper
2. Freedom
3. III
4. Erratic Kids

Country: Austria
Genre: Mathcore, Noise Rock, Post Hardcore, Experimental
Label:
Wire Globe Recordings

Jakuzi’s Attempt have a lot going for them. Hailing from Wolfsburg in Austria, this three piece have a huge sound and are incredibly dynamic reminding me at times of a modern day REFUSED, high praise indeed. Erratic Kids is adventurous as it is full of hooks. “I know you know” sings Markus Steinkellner over the mathy guitars second before exploding with a hardcore scream worthy of any current big wig in the screamo/hardcore set. Whisper follows the same path, intricate guitars and drums layered over a thumping bass and brutal vocal track. But the crème de le crème here is Freedom which employs some Nu Metal tricks without sounding dated in any way. The vocal hook of “I built myself a flying machine” is plain weird but the RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE-esque screams of Freedom are never sounding false or forced. There is so much passion on this EP you cant help but be moved. Thiscomes highly recommended. -waller not weller-
