Black Churches

Country: USA
Genre: Posthardcore, Indie
Black Churches are an interesting band based out of Wilbraham, MA that I stumbled upon after hearing them on Cake Life's Volume I compliation. Black Churches play an interesting brand of posthardcore/indie rock that mixes equal parts Nick Cave, Blood Brothers, Fax Arcana, Black Heart Procession, and The Mars Volta. The great thing about Black Churches is that you get a certain feeling of discordance and tension mixed with a twisted sense of melody within the music. Completing the package are vocals that seem to make you think that the singer is paranoid and makes you believe that someone is coming after you out of the darkness wielding a knife intended for your heart. Definitely hard to describe, so I opted to be vague in describing Black Churches. Definitely a great listen. Links courtesy Black Churches bandcamp page. Buy some merchandise and support this band! I also included links to Cake Life Vol. I and Vol. II for you to check out. Great label with lots of great great bands as well. Enjoy!

Teenage Cool Kids/Daniel Striped Tiger split 7" (2010)

1. Teenage Cool Kids-Poison Ivy
2. Teenage Cool Kids-Clumsy Anthems
3. Daniel Striped Tiger-Was It?
4. Daniel Striped Tiger-Nonstop

Country: USA
Genre: Emotive Hardcore, Emo, Punk
Hell yes! Another highly anticipated release for me. The people at Protagonist music have yet to put out something I dislike. This release is almost schizophrenic in nature. Side one features two new songs from Denton, Texas's Teenage Cool Kids and continue in their tried and true formula of catchy, infectious, and energetic style of Emo/pop-punk. Side two features two new songs from Boston Ma area band Daniel Striped Tiger. Daniel Striped Tiger continue with their unique form of emotive, cathartic, and at times blistering style of dynamic hardcore. Definitely a great listen. Get a copy before this one is out of print.

Black September-The Forbidden Gates Beyond LP (2010)

1. The Forbidden Gates Beyond
2. Creation Of Chaos
3. Hallow Of Decay
4. Tyrants
5. Tombs
6. The Absence of Life & Death
7. Unleashed

Country: USA
Genre: Black metal, Crust
Black September is a Chicago black metal/crust band who play a style of music that's ferocious, violent and powerful. After hearing Black September's split 7" with Thou entitled Thrive & Decay, I was definitely hooked. Much like Thou, Black September have a similar DIY/Punk approach to their music and the band continues to work hard on building upon their own sound. The Forbidden Gates Beyond is Black September's debut full length and does not disappoint. Fans of punk influenced black metal/crust take note! Black September fits in well with bands such as Salvation, Arts, and obviously Thou. Do your self a favor give this a listen and pick yourself up a copy while you're at it. Thousandaires is a great pop punk band from NY featuring members of Bridge & Tunnel, Get Bent, Potboiler, Halo Fauna and The State Lottery. Powerful vocals deliver poeteic lyrics, layered over intricate guitar parts and a pounding backbeat. 1. The Saddest Landscape-Death Becomes Us

2. Pianos Become The Teeth-New Normal

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, "Screamo"
Label: Just Say No Records

Hell Yes! A new split 9" from two of my favorite emotive hardcore bands. THE SADDEST LANDSCAPE are back from their indefinite hiatus ( their last release was in 2006) and are continuing where they left off: powerful. This definitely was a great precursor to the band's recently released You Will Not Survive LP. PIANOS BECOME THE TEETH play a similar style of emotive hardcore and their song on this 9" is a great follow-up to 2009's Old Pride. This is an incredible release from both bands. Enjoy!

XYX - Discography

Country:
Mexico
Genre: Punk, Psychedelic, Noise.
Label: Nene Records

Rhythms are strong, supple, and very aggressive, and clever effects bolster the bass sound and add intrigue to the strident female vocals. This reminds me of the punkest, most panicked, and most sharply focused moments of the early-80s Brazilian all-female group As Mercenárias, but a little more ragtag and a lot noisier. And by "clever effects," don't think I mean that this is striving for supremacy of intellect; what I mean is...This band has achieved an excellent full-range sound.-Art for Spactics

The Fucking Wrath-Terra fire EP (2010)

1. Low brow
2. With The Fangs Of God
3. Don't Look Back
4. Blank Slate
5. Hurricane

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Metal
Label: Teepee Records

The Fucking Wrath was conceived in Montalvo, California by three long-time friends who worked in the same record store and lived on the same street. While the members had each been playing in dedicated bands for more than ten years, they initially formed T.F.W. as a result of jamming for fun after work. Since their first gig in November of 2005, they have gone on to play a continual string of shows that hasen't stopped yet. The band recorded their first album, "Season Of Evil", during the week of 6/06/06. In true DIY fashion the band payed for the recording themselves. After numerous shows playing with a ride range of bands from Tragedy to Blue Cheer & High On Fire to the Adolescents their mix of punk/stoner metal/rock n roll caught the attention of Goodfellow & Challenge The Throne Records who released "Seasons..." on CD & LP respectivly in August of 2007. With rave reviews from print and online zines, the group embarked on two nation-wide tours and several west coast ventures. The Fucking Wrath now averages close to 150 shows per year with no sign of slowing down. They have a track included on the Nardcore Compilation: 30 Years Later LP on Burning Tree Records. In 2009, Brent Woodward joined the group, adding a second guitar to the mix. Fueled by significant doses of THC, their songs are simultaneously heavy and fast, while cleverly infused with slower, droned-down riffs and sudden timing changes. The band's sound can be described as an amalgamation of groups such as Discharge, Black Flag, The Melvins and Kill 'em All-era Metallica. The Fucking Wrath consists of Craig Kasamis: guitar/guttural onslaught, Nick Minasian: bass/visceral ravaging, Brent Woodward: guitar/looking good, and John Crerar: really heavy drums. They And The Children-Discography (2002-2008)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Metal
Label: Kill Normal Records, Tor Johnson, Shock Value.

A cornerstone of Connecticut’s DIY screamo/hardcore scene, They and the Children started kicking around in 2003, with their first show in March of that year. Fronted by veteran show promoter Brian Frenette, featuring The Brothers Gorman on guitar and drums, all held up by the elderly father figure of Chris Perrotti switching off bass and guitar duties with Ross Menze, the band has embarked on many tours and released critically acclaimed demos, 7”s, and 12” EPs. They also contributed their song “Aphasia” to a local compilation, along with 49 other Connecticut bands called the “CT Sucks Compilation”. However, the band broke up in September ber2008, and according to Brian, “it was time to move on to other things.” Members of They and the Children currently play in Iron Hand, who released a kick-ass demo cassette in 2009. Enjoy.

If Toronto, ON-based noisecore creeps the Love and Terror Cult were deadly on their 2007 eponymous full-length, they're wonderfully beyond help with the vicious aural defilement of We Are You On Fire. Expeditiously pushing needles so far into the red that they come spinning back full-circle, these 11 tracks are a rabid explosion of cacophonic shards firing straight into our sense of personal well-being. From opener "June Flew" through an odd Blonde Redhead-meets-Jucifer indie/death attack on "Anti-Sex" to the dirty pillaging of "Boot Tricks," this band's bastardized, hardcore-influenced art rock collides with eerie distortion and overwrought, angular guitar riffs. Together, it creates a stunning, freakish, menacing experience all in one stroke. -exclaim.ca

Country: France
Genre: Hip Hop, Electronic.
Label: Ici d'ailleurs

Not easy to talk about this album. Imagine: it's been a year since we dangled Nonstop name in media and allowed Programmien. Indeed, the object is produced by Michniak himself, helped the Den's fire-Diabologum. The titles for download put the mouth water: hip hop nihilistic powerful and surreal. Eat the cake in the disk, and the journey begins. "In front of my neck" starts very strong, a great rhythm and flow just flippant and aggressive Fred Roman, Toulouse accent a gift. "J'paranoïe j'perd an eye, in the heart of my life, my head turns to bite my neck and they returned my office to wank behind my back." "Idiot seeks village" contains many puns felt the corrosive black humor and surreal ("crazy truck brake cons exchange sycamore", "large barbecue burned exchange cons ATV", "ANPE recruits homeless as a man sandwich," "bitch Care would exchange IUD cons wolf trap ", ...) on a background of old school hip hop rhythm. "Do not stay there," THE slap the disc, the big bomb, killing, brutal and nihilistic top neurotic, Arnaud Michniak feat.

The two friends alternately swinging their text, sentence by sentence, a different topic but arranged so that the following sentences are understandable and expected. Roman has a flow just amazing, violent and yelled while Michniak is true to himself, disillusionment and despair. Behind, it hits hard, a huge guitar riff repeating a rhythmic boring. "The wind does not turn", musically spare and very old school, sees Roman releasing his flow with a voice shouting flayed. "The son of the unknown soldier", 7min an imaginary story inspired by Jean-Philippe Teddy, dreamy, musically-Indiano tribal and film, spoken word, piano. Each of the 13 songs has its own identity, its own style, for better (the securities described above) and sometimes for worse: "Always the wind on the bridge" and its rhythmic 80's and the voice that sings like a homeless drunk, clumsy, "it happens" and his instrumentals fictionnesque kitschouille science, "the heart in the back" and his piano poorly controlled, etc .... For the lyrics, it's the same: to navigate between enlightenment and surreal poetic wordplay too easy ("above the sink, the cyclops me a wink," "flowers that j'pensais committed suicide by gathering all alone ", ...), and the taste too strong for the enumeration. "Road movie with crutches" is a disc uneven, alternating saving huge killing, stunning, and cathartic, with songs that perplexed as to their interest in being here. There have been 5 or 6 songs out to have a nearly perfect album. M'enfin is already there is one drive of the year, and this is not the beautiful artwork of the great Stephane Blanquet who play against him!

01.Between Gods And Men
02. Silver Tongue
03. Expectation Turns The Colour Of Fear
04. Gatherer Of Clouds

Country: UK
Genre: Post Metal, Metal.
Label: DIY

The debut demo from UK act Chronos kicks off with a series of ambient hums and arpeggiated clean guitars over dense washes of bass, but don't let those relaxed atmospheres fool you. While there's a good balance of breathing room throughout this four-song, 23-minute outing, once they get going there are some devastatingly pounding rhythms, dissonant textures, and intense shouting/screaming vocals happening here. The overall approach reminds of that whole "Neur-Isis" type of sound – before it got watered down with boring "post-rock" influences and generally drawn out, artsy bullshit. There's just enough layering to thicken things up and add some character, but compared to many bands of this nature there's something refreshingly "stripped down" about these compositions that really works. They've got that plodding, hypnotic repetition angle down, and the straightforward approach to the instrumentation brings out a lot of detail in the vocals. I really find the vocals to be particularly awesome: They're certainly better enunciated than most, and without losing any harshness or feeling. Good stuff. There's a hell of a lot of promise here, so I'll look forward to seeing how the band perfects things as they progress… -Aversionline

Wasteland - Discography (2004-2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Metal
Labels: Clean Plate, Galambis.

Unfortunately 2010 saw an end to another one of my favorite bands. Wasteland played a heavy, devastating, and at times melodic style of crust/hardcore. Song tempos varied from fast, to punishingly slow. Wasteland bore the signature Western MA sound that I've written about before when describing similar bands from this region of the US. What made Wasteland stand out from the crowd was their ugly/dirty style. Wasteland is best described crusty, heavy, punishing, and at times melodic. Lyrically, Wasteland's lyrics were leftist and politically charged. Wasteland fit in well with their peers who included Relics, Furnace, and Ampere. Fans of Trap Them, Ghostlimb, Perth Express, Burial Year, Zann, and Grinding Halt will also enjoy this band. Links courtesy of icoulddietomorrow . Their recorded discography included their split cd with No Trigger (2004), self titled EP(2005), Live at Dead Air 11" (2006) (see Ampere discography post), Wild, Wild West Compilation cassette tracks (2006), and Self Titled Lp (2008). 4. Maguro

Country: UK
Genre: Noise Rock, Post Punk, Psychedelic, Progressive, Experimental.
Label: Stolen Recordings

The debut, four-track, 10in vinyl release from the Japanese quartet Bo Ningen sprays action-painted psychedelic guitar splatter over choppy post-punk riffs, with nods to the improvisatory ethos that always nibbles at the fringes of all the best Japa-noise music. Impossible speed meets unbelievable precision. Vast slabs of sound thread delicate pathways. The third track, Atami, a seven-minute progressive-rock-flavoured ballad with shades of the Mars Volta and Smashing Pumpkins, laments the titular seaside resort, once popular, but now largely deserted, and pitches towards a more melodic, contemplative middle ground without sacrificing Bo Ningen’s dignity.

Campaign-It Likes To Party(2010)/H1N1 (2009) Eps

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Self Released

Bio: Amongst a series of Atlanta scenes where so many bands have gone on scrambling to find their latest skin, the men of Campaign have been throwing down the sound in flesh for years. Where those other bands aim to romance and dance, Campaign pours a thicker cup of blood: this is music in the essence of the brotherhood of hardcore, the shift and light of shoegaze, the party of punk.

Formed from the meat of some of greater Atlanta’s most beloved acts,Campaign comes to the front of the flood riding having ridden through the shit. With the same grit that made bands like Hot Water Music, Jawbreaker, and Dag Nasty not only powerful but seared to memory, and fun, Campaign summons an immediate and heaving presence, edging that classic sound to directions it has needed after all that light. Rough enough to make you spill your beer, warm enough to be stuck in your head while driving home slick with the sweat, Campaign is making their own way, and it erupts. Fusing melodic vocals with choppy breakdowns, guitars that construct ambient texture at the same time as they shred, at the heart here is an unmistakable candor, a cohesion, recollection armed with razor teeth.

Definitely a great listen and pleasant surprise. Expect melodic and gruff sounding hardcore and punk that would fit in well with bands currently on No Idea Records. Fans of Glass and Ashes, Worn In Red, and Young Livers must check this band out! I included their It Likes To Party and H1N1 Eps for you to check out. мища-Discography (So Far) and split with Oppenheimer Limit

Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Hardcore, Screamo
Label: Bear

мища is a russian pet name for a bear. It is pronounced (“mee-sh-uh”, like Mischa Barton) and, in english script, is properly written “miischa”. мища is a three piece d.i.y. emo-violence/screamo band from Hagerstown/Walkersville MD.Formed in October 2008 as a 2 piece, мища began as a side-project of Hagerstown screamo band Vikings! and also features members of Drug Money. They recorded a 5 song demo (which was never released) and played 2 shows before adding vocalist Alex Kauffman. They have been compared to Palatka and Deers among others. (Last FM)

This came as a request from the guys over at CHUG LIFE and features one of those dudes in the band. Honestly, I was quite surprised after listening to them. I hear influences of classic "screamo" bands such as Orchid mixed with touches of powerviolence made popular by bands like Asshole Parade. Rounding out the band's sound are elements of modern bands such as Pansori, Deers! and possibly a "Western Ma" influence made popular by bands such as Ampere, Relics, and Furnace. This mishmash of styles makes for a unique and original take on the modern "screamo" sound. Great work so far guys! Check them out, you won't be disappointed!

Mogwai - Special Moves DVDRip (2010)

Country: Glassgow, Scotland
Genre: Post Rock Masters
Label: Rock Action

Live-album/concert-film combos tend to mark certain memorable occasions: significant anniversaries, a special performance in a historic venue or a massive world tour with an obscenely expensive stage show. Mogwai's first live package-- a concert recording, Special Moves, and a DVD companion, Burning, with a different tracklist-- does not adhere to any of the above criteria. On the surface, it's simply a document of a band in their 14th year, touring behind their least remarkable album to date-- and as far as mythic locations go, the Music Hall of Williamsburg ain't exactly Pompeii. Judging by the wide array of physical/digital purchasing options available on the band's website, the real purpose of this release is to test out new e-commerce possibilities for the band.

However, as Special Moves handily attests, Mogwai don't require additional context to create a sense of an Event-- for the veteran Scottish post-rock quintet, even an ordinary night on the job is full of extraordinary moments. And with 2006's Mr. Beast and 2008's The Hawk Is Howling being greeted with a more mixed reception compared to the band's earth-quaking early releases, Special Moves-- which pulls at least one track from all six Mogwai albums, but no more than two-- strategically positions the band's latter-day material among the old warhorses to build a set list that gradually intensifies and explodes like the band's best instrumental epics. As such, Special Moves represents more than a recording of a specific 2009 concert series in Brooklyn-- it also functions as a compact but thorough career retrospective, and a convenient entry point for newcomers into the band's formidable discography.

The stark, high-contrast black-and-white images presented by directors Vincent Moon and Nathanaël Le Scouarnec in Burning may have been intended as a visual analogue for the extremes Mogwai often favor in their music, but the song selection here provides the band with ample opportunity to explore the space between serenity and cacophony. What's especially impressive about Special Moves is how Mogwai deploy their few vocal tracks to alternately heighten and diffuse tension. Following the ominous scene setters of Hawk's "I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead" and Mr. Beast's "Friend of the Night", the show-- and, particularly, the audience-- really come to life with Happy Songs for Happy People's "Hunted By a Freak", whose eerily obscured vocal melody is crucial to the song's gilded, mountainous majesty; by contrast, the band respectively positions two of their most affecting ballads ("Cody", "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong") next to two of their most sadistically savage ("Mogwai Fear Satan", "Like Herod"), as if to counter the band's reputation as devious, smart-assed noisemakers. Mogwai also seem eager to challenge the notion that their best work is 10 years behind them: They close out Special Moves with a rampaging version of Mr. Beast's "Glasgow Mega-Snake" that makes the preceding, suitably apocalyptic reading of "Like Herod" seem like a mere warm-up exercise. -Stuart Berman / Pichfork.

I returned to the concert last night with this tape in my scoop. Highly recommended by Eduard Tarbuc of Records, I strongly crush on this demo that I listen to loop this morning. Criatura is composed by two members of Deskonocidos, the singer who officiates at the here and bass guitarist who is a true machine riff and solo is not just expect that good. The song we find the girlfriend of one of the two, I forget which, the voice remind me of some Spanish groups 80's with this little reverb effects, we immediately think in Ultimo Resorte, in 1000 times faster and aggressive. For the lyrics is super pessimistic and No Future, we still believe in Ultimo Resorte, I love this state of mind. It's worth dwelling on this demo and I hope that other productions will follow. -No Punks In K-Town.

Bleeding Kansas/Cathedrals Split 12" (2009)

2. Lucky
3. Nothing New
4. With Or Without
Side B: Cathedrals
1. Sonara
2. Daggett
3. Jasenovac
4. Vidal
5. Candelaria

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Metal
I've been looking for this split LP for a while. Metallic doom-punks, Cathedrals, meet Breather Resist-inspired Southern groove masters, Bleeding Kansas, for a 12" split that'll trample you with brutality while simultaneously lulling you into the heavy vibes of true Southern Comfort. Cathedrals blends sludgey, savage, and analog with a violent clarity to create a cut throat tone that gives "post-hardcore" a run for its money. Bleeding Kansas counters those primal urges with submersive, complex riffs that pulse through the grooves in the vinyl, taking drunken swings at those who stumble their way. This yin and yang release is for fans of Botch, Cursed, Coalesce, Trap Them, and Jim Beam. This rip of this LP came courtesy of Toxicbreed's Funhouse. One of the best blogs going in my opinion! I was kind of surprised at how melodic the Bleeding Kansas tracks were on this split. Reminds me of newer Suicide Note. Great release. Too bad Cathedrals recently called it quits. Enjoy!

Heliogabale - Discography (1995 - 2010)

Country: Frace
Genre: Noise Rock, Punk, Experimental
Label: A Tant Rêver Du Roi, Les Disques Du Hangar.

HELIOGABALE is a Paris band whose road met Steve Albini's, Al Sutton's or Iain Burgess'. This time they stopped by the doorstep of French sound engineers Patrick Müller and Antoine Gaillet who respectively recorded and mixed down the band's sixth album to be released in September 2010. Since its beginning in 1992 HELIOGABALE has been using change and evolution as keywords of its music; each album was a break with the previous one, highlighting a unique style. This new opus contains ten songs, dressed up in shadows and lights : some sort of an inventory, polaroid cuts from lives where gymnopedical melodies intervene in the band's rhythmical universe.

Reno are a relatively new band from Brussels, Belgium who play a rocking and chaotic style of hardcore, similar to a mixture of early Every Time I Die and Converge. After hearing Reno's self titled 7", released earlier this year, I was hooked. The eleven songs on The Year Of Love also bring to mind bands such as Breather Resist, Botch, The Minor Times, and Bleeding Kansas. Definitely a must. Enjoy! Dutch vs Irish brutality. Three new songs from Holland's Grinding Halt which sounds somewhere between Left For Dead and From Ashes Rise. Ireland's Drainland follow-up from their first release with two songs which remind us of Unruh playing Dystopia songs. Serious negative stuff by friendly people. Great release. Enjoy!
