Logs-Hogz Lp (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, post hardcore
Label: Self Released

Logs were a 3-piece band based out of Olympia, Washington and featured members of Kidcrash. They have a new album entitled Hogz, which is slated to be released officially in Januray 2011, according to the band's bandcamp page. At times, Logs sounds like a grittier and more chaotic Kidcrash at times. On Hogz, Logs provide us with 8 songs of mathy, thick grooved emotive hardcore with shouted vocals. I think I even get a bit of the "Louisville Kentucky sound" on this release, which makes me think of Kidcrash by way of Young Widows or Plows. This album was originally recorded back in 2008 and is a great follow-up to the band's self titled 7" released the same year. Enjoy! I can't wait for the official release and will definitely be picking up a copy!

Le Pre Ou Je Suis Mort/Dolcim/Men As Trees/Dying In Motion-Split Lp (2010)

Country: Switzerland, USA, Sweden
Genre: Hardcore, post hardcore, post rock

Le Pre Ou Je Suis Mort (France) are first and offer with “l'avenir nous appartiendra” a new song which proofs that their debut EP was not a one hit wonder. The song convinces on full scale. Different intense exchange of blows lead after a really ear catching intro into an absolute brilliant endpart, where you will find instruments that are not that often paired with music like this, absolute thrilling. With every break out the voice gets more despaired and the melodies fill more room. A great choice of different guitar effects, confer this long and epic piece of music the right draft. Next are Dolcim (USA) who contribute with “Claire, advertising, 31” a straight forward driving song. This 3-piece band makes a lot of noise and trusts at this point once again on the methods they used on both of their full-lengths. Drum lines full of pressure, guitar melodies which are coupled with digital delays and diverse other effects, deep beating bass lines combined with a soaking voice that seems never to loose intensity. A really short calm kept middle part is the exception, surrounded by distorted forward rockin parts. Men As Trees (USA) open the b-side with their unique song entitled “discovery”, which starts with a couple of calm played tones before a dark screaming voice guided by a heavy played guitars take care for the addition of enough volume. Variations of the used melodies combined with screamed and sung vocals cater for unexpected skills. The songwriting is very various, you´ll find a lot of influences without loosing grip. A highlight is the acoustic guitar before the song leads into the last part in which you'll find all musical fixings this band uses. The endpoint of this release is set by Dying In Motion (Sweden), who contribute with "in meiner welt", "fürchtet unsere Sanftmut" und "komet" 3 songs which are a perfect sequel of their recently released album. The songs are caught somewhere between early french influences combined with postrock/hardcore sounds. What makes this band special is that they hold this combination under the cloak of simplicity what makes their music really interesting. All contributed songs of this release were till this point unreleased. Here's another great split LP from German label Moment of Collapse. Fans of emotive hardcore and post rock take note!

Mediocracy-Human Progress-Endless Regress (2010)

Country: Romania
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Sludge
Label:Asiluum Arts

Mediocracy took almost 4 years to get started due to constant line-up
changes, problems in finding the right people, rehearsal places, money
and so on. It finally happened in the summer of 2010 after Viez, the
lead singer, met Radu (Cap De Craniu), Para (Rain District), Dop
(Deviant) and Costin (Nightpray, Cap de Craniu) and they immediately
started writing the songs that you hear on ‘Human Progress-Endless
Regress‘.
Initially the band went for a classic way of recording but the
material was soon scraped in favor of a “live recording” aproach.
This means that all the energy, the feel and the anger are preserved
much in the same way of a live concert. This is not a record for the
purists or people expecting technical showoffs; this is a loud and
uncompromising record made for the fed up among us.

Mediocracy: ” Human Progress-Endless Regress is our way of making
ourselves heard freely. This is our stand against opression in all
it’s forms be it pollitical systems like fascism, capitalism, state
communism, religious indoctrination or censoreship.

In a world that is torn apart by
theft,corruption,hate,discrimination,economic decline and a constant
feeling of hopelessness, writing angry songs inspired by all of these
is our way and maybe the only way of resisting and remaining somewhat
sane.

These are all heartfelt and honest songs coming from a band of people
who sometimes feel that are at the end of civilization but keep
struggling to make it through.

Humanity may be closing in on it’s end but for now we are still here
and we resist as much as possible…and Mediocracy is only at the
beginning! “

This came as a request from the label/band. Great release. Punishing, brutal and heartfelt. Definitely worth checking out! Enjoy!

Low Places-S/T (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Recession Records

F**k yeah! This came as a request from the band. I heard an early demo from the band via Toxicbreed's Funhouse and was totally floored. Low Places (featuring current and ex-members of CTL and Duke Nukem Forever) do not disappoint with their debut offering. Low Places give us 6 songs of angry, pissed, spite filled hardcore punk that would fit in well on labels such as youth attack or painkiller records. Definitely a must for fans of Pulling Teeth, older Ceremony, Failures, and Nazi Dust. Great stuff!

Kerouac-Cold and Distant, Not Loving 10" (2010)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Tangled Talk Records/Holy Roar

Damn, what we have here is one great 10" slab o' hardcore from the UK. Kerouac is all you would expect by looking at the album's cover art. Kerouac play heavy as hell hardcore with an almost controlled rage simmering under the surface, rather than completely taking over the music or resulting in utter collapse. Cold and distant, not loving is a great title for this 10"because it conveys a certain controlled harshness and rage that keeps the listener in anticipation of a complete meltdown into the rage present within the bands music. I pick up hints of Converge, Achilles, and The Minor Times at times. At others, the harsh starkness in some of the songs make me think of bands like Throats or Breather Resist. Throw in some overt ugliness ala Deadguy or Unsane, and what you get is one fine 10". Great effort. These seven songs demand your attention. Check out this 10". You will not be disappointment. Enjoy and try not to kill yourself in the process!

Black lungs._.Valley of the dolls(2010)

Country: Canada
Year: 2010
Genre: Post-hardcore
Songs: 2

When the hours came to collect the moments in which a man must express only and truly himself, people heard. People, only and truly, listened. People still drew lines but none connected. Everyone forgot to remember, purposefully, as if it was an act of tribute. The earth that flowers the garden selves of lonesome men grew rich. All the roots of creation held with delicate contingence the rage and boredom that most neglect to touch upon. Winds carrying only the wonder of ages became driven solely by attraction. They reached for one another with the same will and mystery the space between two universes beholds. Such is the space between oneself and art. Such is man who makes music and if it be their will, our eyes may know only brightness. If it be their will, our senses will migrate and we may feel sound softly on the backs of our necks. If it be their will, words may be the music of all seasons and all days. If it be their will, the air may move above us in motion handsome enough to arrest time in place.

And if it be their will, the landscape may move beneath our feet in waves tall enough to envelope the dooms of love.

Thanks Hombre.

Alaska/End Reign-Baphomet split 7" (2010)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Hardcore, metal
Label: Fist In The Air/Worthless Nights Records

Alaska and End Reign present us with a great 7" here. Each band provides the listener with two songs each of stripped down metallic hardcore complete with crunchy/midpaced power chords and vicious vocals. Both bands follow a very similar approach that keeps the music more rugged and stripped down, and include a vocal style that's harsh and gravelly. Alaska and End Reign include driving, yet midpaced rhythms, forceful breakdowns, and hints of dissonance to complete the package. Alaska and End Reign are a perferct match to one another on this 7". Excellent release! Fans of Hammers, Doldrums, and Enabler take note! Highly recommended!

Killing The Dream-Lucky Me (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore
Label: Deathwish Inc.

Sacramento CA's Killing The Dream are an inspiring and passionate hardcore band. Embodying the same positive emotion found in bands such as Verse and Have Heart, and Defeater, Killing The Dream's approach is the definition of hardcore power. Making even the most jaded of listeners appreciate and praise them as their new hardcore heroes in the making.
After releasing a fantastic 7"EP/CD on Rivalry in 2004, Killing The Dream made Deathwish their new label home. In 2005, the band released their "I Rewrote It" 7"EP on Deathwish to praise from hardcore kids everywhere. In early 2005, Killing The Dream travelled to Godcity Studios to record their "In Place Apart" album with Kurt Ballou (Converge). The album was declared "The best hardcore album of the year" by Alternative Press Magazine. And in 2008, Killing The Dream released "Fractures", a stunning 12 song album recorded by J. Robbins (Jawbox), that solidified the band's place at the very top of today's hardcore community.
Since then, Killing The Dream have been hard at work on their newest effort, "Lucky Me".
Recorded by Zach Ohren and Pat Hills, "Lucky Me" shows Killing The Dream in the grips of true artistic progression. With "Lucky Me", Killing The Dream have taken their formulaic metallic hardcore approach and evolved within it. Injecting hook laden melodies deep in their core that bring new dimension and depth to an already impressive sound. "Lucky Me" shows that a band can grow within, without having to leave themselves or their audience, behind. Overall, a great album and worth the wait. My only complaint is the length. Lucky Me could have almost been released as an EP. Enjoy!

Fura - Mustela Putorius (2010)

Country: Spain
Genre: Post-rock, instrumental
Tracks: 3

Fura was founded in late 2008 when 4 musicians from around the world decide to combine their artistic creativity resulting in a musical experiment with a sound that is similar to a ferret (furain catalan): they could sleep many hours, entering in a state of absolute calm, to become a very active and curious animal.

Trophy Wife-Patience Fury (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Post punk, indie rock
Label: 3o7 Knox Records

Bio: There are plenty of female rockers, but rockers that make rock for women are less abundant. Trophy Wife is one of the rare groups that makes ear-shattering, vocal chord-shredding songs without sacrificing insight, advancement and intelligence. It’s an uncommon mixture of raw, unabashed intensity and sharp-tongued lyricism, and Trophy Wife embraces this dichotomy fully. For the Carrboro, NC and Philadelphia, PA-based band, retreat is not an option; Patience Fury, the band’s latest LP out on 307 Knox Records this summer, is an exercise in frankness and candor, an unfiltered glimpse at hard-rocking women with a sound and significance they dare you not to heed.

Finally got the go ahead to review and post Trophy Wife's debut full-length Patience Fury. Trophy Wife are a lo-fi riot grrl influenced post punk band from North Carolina/Philadelphia PA area that reminds me of 90's group Spitboy mixed with touches of grunge and math rock. At times, Trophy Wife have angular leanings reminiscent of bands such as Fugazi. On Patience Fury, Trophy Wife provide the listener with 9 more songs of fierce/angular post punk very reminiscent of a modern sounding Slant 6 mixed with Fugazi as well as flourishes of post grunge and 90's era emotive hardcore. Trophy Wife is definitely a band to check out. Very impressive release, especially because Trophy Wife are a two piece.

General Lee-Roads (2010)

Country: France
Genre: Hardcore, post hardcore, metalcore
Label: Hiphiphip

General Lee, a french based post hardcore band, flawlessly move between post-rock, post-metal, and hardcore. General Lee are one of the next batch of twisted beautiful brutal bands to emerge from Béthune, France. Since 2002, General Lee never stopped to look forward, creating their own definition of chaos, melting intensity, blackness and emotion in a shape that belongs to abrasive hardcore music. Roads is General Lee's follow-up to 2008's Hannibal ad Portas.with. On "Roads" General Lee sets out to create a tense climate, teetering on the edge of a complete molecular meltdown. At the same time, Roads gives me the sense of an icy and oppressive atmosphere, that's dually heavy and melancholic. Monstrous riffs add to the band's abrasive sound. Completing the package are cathartic vocals that signal the coming of the apocalypse. General Lee do a fine job in blurring the lines between hardcore and metal. Great effort, guys! Fans of all things heavy! Enjoy! Props go to Perception Through Dissonance for beating me to the punch and posting this. A great blog that definitely needs your attention!
