Nicoffeine - Admiring Those Artholes (2008)

Country: Germany
Genre: Progressive Rock, Noise Rock.
Label: Blue Noise
Tracks: 6

Wow, no prisoners are made here, listening habits aside and a bulk ..... on song structures, where, as a listener you are already happy, who finds the band a common end. Otherwise, the backing band shifts and rumbles and shrieks, sighs and shimmers in the foreground the guitar, and sometimes are added bestial scream. Noise is written with the great, and the complete album requires the listener from a lot of concentration and attention. For Nicoffeine takes time and rest, then opens up a unique world of sound, and you have a chance to open up the density, nerve anything could. And at home, the Koblenz course the best German Noise label * Blue Noise - brute!

Wild Dögs - Discography (2009 - 2010)

Country: Spain
Genre: Hardcore, Grind, Thrash, Stoner, Rock'n Roll.
Label: ¿?

Spanish female fronted grind/crust. The vocals are what make this out, but the more I listen, the songs are pretty exceptional, though I could do with out the bits that lean towards the metal side of grind. Add a touch of mid tempo rock'n roll on the last song throw in a tasteful of melody hand you have a killer demo. -Maximun Rock'n roll

Salvation-Mortality Interactions LP (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Metal, Crust
Label: Youth Attack

Damn, I've been waiting to hear this album for the past two months. Pennsylvania PA's Salvation play an intense style of metallic, crusty, punk influenced style of music that's truly hard to ignore. Salvation is dark, forboding, furious, and will pummel you into oblivion with their style of music. Influences will be pointless because I hear so many elements of great bands coming from Salvation's sound. Mortality Interactions is a great release that will destroy the listener with it's massive approach to heavy music. Fans of hardcore, punk, metal, and crust will equally enjoy this band due to the intense nature of the music. This album was limited to 500 copies and is already sold out. Amazing is an understatement. A repress better be in the works because I missed out on this. Major props to Derrick from well fed for the original link. Excellent blog that's well worth your attention.

Best of 2010 Pt. II

As I said in my last "best of" post, I broke my picks for best albums of 2010 into two categories. Here's part II, covering the emo, punk, and indie rock releases that I consider to get the top nods for 2010. Enjoy! It's already looking like a great 2011 with Lemuria and Higtide Hotel already putting out new material. Can't wait.

Purple Rhinestone Eagle-The Great Return (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Sludge, Garage rock, psychedelic, stoner rock
Label: Stankhouse Records

Portland Oregon's female power trio Purple Rhinestone Eagle play a great style of music that's hard to classify at times. On the band's latest album, The Great Return, I hear a varied style of influences ranging from 70's garage punk like The Stooges or MC5, to later era garage punk such as Drive Like Jehu or Black Tambourine. Add to that a possible Slits vibe by way of Black Sabbath and you might start to get where the band is going with their sound. Overall a great mixture of sounds that makes for a unusual take on garage rock, punk, and psychedelic/stoner metal. An extra large thanks goes out to Travis from Stankhouse records for being extra cool and sending me this record on vinyl! Do your self a favor and give Purple Rhinestone Eagle a listen. Highly recommended!!!

Lemuria-Pebble (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Indie rock, pop punk
Label: Bridge 9

With some of the sweetest sounding girl/ boy dueling vocals heard in indie rock in years, Buffalo, NY's Lemuria is poised to be one of 2011's breakout artists. The band's debut Bridge Nine album, "Pebble," is chock full of catchy choruses, intricate guitar work and sugary vocals. The pristine recording was done at the Magpie Cage with producer J Robbins (Hey Mercedes, The Promise Ring, Jawbreaker) and delivers 11 solid tracks that are perfect for fans of Superchunk, Get Up Kids and Sebadoh.

Total Devastation - Honour The Disorder (2008)

Country: Finlad

Genre: Death Metal, Metal, Progressive

New album shows no compromises, instead it gives you nine tracks of violence, dishonour and hooliganism. Maybe punkier approach than before, but still heavier than most of the 'metal' albums of today.

Genre: punk, hardcore
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Label: 22 distris!
Tracks: 18

(DDT)

Hightide Hotel-Nothing Was Missing Except, Me (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: postpunk, posthardcore, emo, indie rock
Label: Runner Up Records

Nothing Was Missing, Except Me" doesn't walk much middle ground. The debut LP from Philadelphia's Hightide Hotel comes off as either hauntingly mellow or completely frantic, depending on the song and perhaps one's own perspective. Either way, the entire record is underscored by the sense of desperation that Hightide has always so eloquently conveyed. The contrasts are stark and capture pretty accurately what it's like to be satisfied one minute and have the rug pulled out from under you the next. Great record, great band. Enjoy! Fans of Algernon Cadwallader, My Heart To Joy, Castevet, and Into It. Over It take note!

Best Of 2010

Wow, it's hard to believe it's almost the end of another year. 2010 saw many stellar releases in the independent music scene and 2011 is shaping to be another good year. Here's a brief recap of what I consider to be the best releases in the hardcore, metal, and noise rock scene for 2010. Later this week I'll do a part two covering the best of 2010 in the emo, punk and indie rock scenes. So for what it's worth (probably not much, LOL) here goes:

Havalina - Las Flores Secas (2010)

Country: Spain
Year:
2010

Genre: Indie, Stoner, Pop.
Label: Origami
Tracks: 11

The Madrid market today Havalina take his latest work The Leaves of hand again Origami Records after the shot and imperfection. Castilian to keep their words, and far more mature stories with which we were accustomed, plagued by sexual instincts and impulsivity.

This album is the perfect evolution following his previous works: a neat and clean production, more quiet and thoughtful. The sound is still as strong and angry, but now we put into an atmosphere much more dense and dark, with songs touch more "stoner" like Mammoth, Mordant or Desert, which is responsible for opening the album with a riff to Black Sabbath style. There are also times for quiet and introspection: The Leaves, The Wall and the evening feature inspiring instrumental passages. All accompanied by a soft, melodic voice, which acts as a counterpoint to the harshness of guitar, bass and drums.

The Leaves, has been recorded entirely in the studies the left side, with Dany Richter as a recording engineer, and later mixed and mastered by Manuel Cabezalí himself. In terms of composition, we are as a novelty song with Personal Objects, written by the brother of Manuel, Jose Juan Cabezalí, with an average duration of items significantly higher than in June and Imperfection.

In short, an album of eleven songs impeccably finished, it's worth listening to from beginning to end, through the different stages of disruption, loss, decay, anxiety, peace and tranquility that it offers during the trip. A masterpiece for the discerning ears. -YndYTV

Country: El Salvador
Genre: Hardcore
Year: 2010
Label: D.I.Y.
Tracks: 11

The Suicide of Western Culture - The Suicide of Western Culture (2010)

Country: Spain
Genre: Electronic, IDM, Post Rock
Label: Irregular
Tracks: 14

With just some toy keyboards and a bunch of second hand pedals, these two sci-fi individuals decided to create their songs from the room of a hostel for students in London, trying to reproduce sounds from those bands they admired in the 90s: Godspeed You Black Emperor, Disco Inferno, Mogwai, Flying Saucer Attack, Tortoise...

Also strongly influenced by Spanish unusual but classic bands in the electronic scene like Esplendor Geométrico (harsh industrial sounds) and the mechanical low-fi pop of Telefilme. Hardness and emptiness, melody and surprise, instrumental post-electronic based on the palpable, impossible contortion of buttons, a revolution of the machines, some as familiar as the Casio CZ-1000 or the beloved TR505 drum machine ... an ode to the analog power. The result is a homonym album, recorded between November 2008 and January 2009 in Vauxhall (London) and mastered in Barcelona.

The result of all this gear of genres is a9 tracks album, ‘The Suicide Of Western Band’ (titled to the name of the band), registered between November 2008 and January 2009 in Vauxhall (London) and mastered in Barcelona.

Devils of Belgrade - Tracks of the Cloven Hoof (2008)

Country: USA
Year: 2008
Genre: Stoner, Thrash, Heavy, Instrumental
Label: D.I.Y.
Tracks: 11

Hailing from nowhere near Belgrade, Serbia (try Indianapolis, Indiana in the U.S., friends) come the mostly instrumental sounds of Devils of Belgrade, and what a marvelous bunch of music this is to behold. Tracks of the Cloven Hoof sports no less than nine solid tracks that run the gamut from Thrash to Sludge to Stoner to Progressive to Power to plain ol' Blues and Rock - and then back again. Brilliant, really. That they remain unsigned is curious, too, because they truly are a talented bunch. Specific mention must be made of Kreeb's bass because he's as much a virtuoso as the 6-string slingers (Adam and Hatchet). And drummer Todd is certainly no slouch, stopping on a dime just quick enough to pick it up (hey, free money!), and keeping up with - or propelling to madness? - his band mates.

Some song titles are really riotous, here's looking at "Corpseweed" and "Diary of a Hashish Eater," but album opener "Swirling Frozen Doom" would be a keeper with a less clever name. Highlights include the entire album, but "Lung Stripper Lowdown" is easily the most interesting, what with that swamp guitar blues bit. Sonically one would rightly reminisce about Karma to Burn, the instrumental nature of this beast undoubtedly aiding the comparison, while at times The Atomic Bitchwax and The Fucking Champs are recalled. The band's ability to blend all aspects of its influences invokes the majesty of Mastodon while not sounding alike at all. The Devils of Belgrade simply like what they like and not so simply play what they play (i.e., this is heady stuff). Tracks of the Cloven Hoof rules. That's all that needs to be said. Buy it. Now. Decisión._.st(2010)

Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Genre: hardcore
Label: D.I.Y.
Tracks: 12

Meczûp - Hanging from the Purgatory's Pendulum (2010)

Country: Turkey
Genre: Drone, Noise, Experimental, Classical.
Label: None
Tracks: 7

This music is not pursuant to "conserve"tories' mentality which describes the music as a composite of compatible sounds. Leaps of anarchist frequencies, a discipline which can not be rehabilitated by metronome's tick-tocks, a velvet and transcendental touch...

Batillus/Hallowed Butchery split 12" (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Black metal, Doom
Label: Vendetta Records

Damn. This is a killer release. Hallowed Butchery's follow-up to 2009's Funeral Rites for the Living EP features 2 songs of black metal tinged with an almost Neil Young style of alt country and Americana. To seal the deal, Hallowed Butchery add an aggressive, balls out style of doom to their sound. It's hard to believe that this band consists of one sole member, Ryan Scott Fairfield. Batillus is a Brooklyn, NY based band who destroy the listener on their side of the album with 3 songs of atmospheric doom metal complete with crushing riffs, destructive bass, and massive drums. To complete the package, Batillus add synthesizers that have an almost 70's prog-rock vibe. A damn solid release that demands your attention. Batillus just signed to 7th rule recordings. Country: France
Genre: Metal, Hardcore, Grindcore, Mathcore, Noise.
Tracks: 6

SICKBAG started as a Napalm Death influenced grindcore band. They've released several demos and EP in 2003 and 2004 (these have been repressed on one CD). A first album was later recorded to be released on polish label Deaformeathing Production in 2006. They've toured a lot in France and Eastern Europe. After been relocated to Paris with several line up changes, SICKBAG made it's music elvove a lot.

They kept the dark mood but added lots of tempo changes and more modern riffs in their old school influences. Six songs were recorded last summer in Paris' Studio Sainte Marthe, all the music has been recorded live. The sound is powerful and as dirty as possible, in the way the scandi crust metal bands do. While listening to these new songs, I can still feel the urgency, the tension in the music even if they have evolved from grindcore to modern hardcore metal & punk crossover. These six songs (that last almost half an hour) taste like despair, they are here to prove that it has been hard but SICKBAG is still up and SICKBAG is that kind of band that really deserves your attention ! -Destructure.
