Mother Susurrus - Self Titled EP 10" [2010]

Country: Finland
Genre: Post Metal / Sludge
Label: No Label

Mother Susurrus are a 4-piece based out of Tampere. I'm not too sure when they started out, but they are unsigned as of now, having only put out this self-titled EP thus far, so they must be fairly new on the scene. They should have a full-length up for grabs sometime towards summer, so this will naturally be re-posted when that happens. Basically, this type of post-sludge is right up my alley - very dark and heavy - as well as the vocals. Although the songs are of the lengthy type, this band doesn't veer too far into the lighthearted soundscapes that these kinds of bands are typically known for, but the build-up on their instrumental sections are definitely worth the wait in that respect. I'm guessing you could liken them to a mixture of Old Man Gloom, Alaskan and Betrayal at Bespin, but they're definitely honing their own style in the end result.

Shards-S/T LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Sorry State Records

After two great demo tapes, Raleigh, North Carolina's Shards return to Sorry State for their debut LP. The style is still dark, catchy punk in the tradition of bands like TSOL, 45 Grave and early Christian Death, but this time around the production is much more layered and ambitious, driving these great songs into your brain with maximum impact. Great 80's vibe! Fans of No Class and Brainhandle will definitely be into this band!

Yfere - Zirkel (2010)

Country: Germany
Genre: Emoviolence, Metal, Black Metal.
Label: Klangverhältnisse
Tracks: 8

Thematically 'Zirkel' (german for 'cycle') deals with the ubiquity of cycles, which, in the continuous mist of change, are opened, explored, closed and rediscovered constantly. The songs reflect on how cycles interweave and construct complex relationships, which dominate our thoughts and actions, how they self-reflexively enlarge and consolidate life, the mind, the world and our existence within and our view on it.

Always Wanted War-Doom 3-D EP (2010)

Country: Germany
Genre: Hardcore, punk, metal
Label: Tief In Marcellos Schuld Records

*By Request from the Band

Bio: Always wanted War is a three piece from Cuxhaven / Germany. Always Wanted War started as a Duo in 2005 and became a three piece in 2007. Always Wanted War say they pretty much sound like 3 Punks/ Metalheads who are also influenced by melodic indie rock such as Bloc Party. Haven't heard this yet, so I can't vouch for their sound.

We Had A Deal-3 songs (2011)

Genre: Hardcore, posthardcore, screamo

We had a deal is four piece band from Germany who combine elements of hardcore, punk, and 90's screamo that results in a volitile sound that brings to mind a mixture of bands ranging from Daitro and La Quiete to more straight-forward hardcore bands such as Touche Amore and Defeater. Great demo that's definitely worth checking out.

Gälernä - Demo 2006 (2011)

Country: Spain
Genre: Crust, Death'n' Rroll, Metal, Punk
Label:
Throne Records
Tracks: 6

Gälernä is a spanish power-trio made up of veterans of the underground wars:
NOËL – bass & vocals (Gruesome Stuff Relish, Boneyard, Altar Of Giallo, Väd Här, etc.)
PEÑA – drums (Biotech, etc.)
UG – guitar & backing vocals (Intolerance, Strangis Guajes, Mass Slaughter, etc.)

Noël recorded a 7 tracks demo back in March 2006 and somehow it was set laid to rest until UG and Peña approached Noël in summer 2010 with the aim to use such recording as the starting point of a real band.

From that moment on we´ve developed the main tracks of the demo, written brand new stuff, arranged some covers for the live set, and we´ll be recording material along 2011, intended to be used as the debut album as well as several splits and EPs.

The word Galerna is related to the Asturias´ shores where we were born, raised and still live in. "Galerna is a violent storm, very difficult to foresee, with huge bursts of gusted West to Northwest winds striking the Cantabrian Sea. It is an implacable scourge of the seamen".

Damn. Raw Nerve continue to deliver the goods on their follow-up cassette entitled Nervous Habits. What you have here is three new tracks of violent hardcore/punk dripping with hate, spite, and venom. This cassette is a3 song teaser for their upcoming Midnight EP that should released later this year. Chicago's Raw Nerve continue to impress me with this release and show no signs of slowing down. Great release. Can't wait for the Midnight EP. Enjoy! Fans of Vaccine, Confines, Failures, Aerosols, and Veloz take note! Unfortunately, this release like most Youth Attack releases was limited to 200 copies and sold out faster than a corrupt U.S. congressman. Hopefully we'll see a repress on cassette or vinyl!

"A wonderfully crafted, no bull example of what memorable rock albums should strive to be. ...Move Forward”, is a perfectly balanced equation, consisting of equal parts hard rock with solid vocals and catchy rhythms designed for bobbing heads." - East Scene Magazine

"pop-rock at its finest. ..vocalist Mark McMillon really carries the album with a voice that’s appealing and adds a new characteristic to the music that surrounds it (much like Anthony Raneri does in Bayside), and the lyrics are refreshing and up-beat, in the scene where depression and loathing is the hot topic (pun intended)." - Absolute Punk Dot Net

Home._.st(2010)

Country: Austria
Year: 2010
Genre:sluge/hardcore-whatsoever-trio
Tracks: 6

HOME was founded in Winter 2009/10 by Hans-Peter Ganner (Bass, Vocals), Amadeus Mader (Guitar) and (Mathias Magerle – Drums). Altough they've know each other for many years, and all of them played in several bands, this was their first effort to create music together. The famouse Postrockcommunity-blog says about their music „...A mix of Sludge, Psychedelic und Hardcore awaits you. Everyone, who is looking for power in music, won't be dissapointed.“ Fair enough.

These kind words have been written about the first release of HOME, a self-titeld 3-Track-EP with the unholy playtime of exactly 13 minutes and 13 seconds. They've recorded it all by themselves in January 2010 and released only 100 units, all of them sold out. But hey, that doesn't matter at all, because HOME prefer that their music should be listened by many people and not be bought by just a few. Therefore you can download the EP on their MySpace-Site for free.

Cheap Girls-Find Me A Drink Home (2008)

Country: USA
Genre: Indie Rock
Label: Paper+Plastik

I can't believe I haven't heard of this band until recently. Cheap Girls are an indie rock three piece from Lansing, Michigan who play an infectious style of stripped down indie rock and pop music that makes me wish it was summer here in CT. Cheap Girls take a simple, stripped down approach to their sound that results in a damn fine record. Cheap Girls' influences run the spectrum of indie rock and pop punk. At times I hear influences ranging from Dinosaur Jr., Superchunk, and Built To Spill to bands such as Smoking Popes. I also hear elements of newer indie rock bands and Cheap Girls fit in well with other bands of the genre such as Lemuria, Failure's Union, Meneguar, and Old Growth. Definitely a must in my opinion. A perfect way to get rid of cabin fever on a crappy January day. I also included a link for the band' 2nd album, My Roaring 20's. Cheap Girls put out some damn fine tunes on both albums enjoy. While you're at it grab a copy of the Cheap Girls/Lemuria split 7" on No Idea.

Bear Claw - Discography (2004 - 2010)

Country: Usa
Genre: Post Hardcore, Noise Rock.
Label: Sick Room Records

Imagine walking into a donut shop, delirious with hunger. Not just anything will suffice. You have a man's appetite and you need a man's pastry. You glance past all of the crullers, long johns and old-fashioned pastries and dismiss them as trivial, wimpy snacks. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see a BEAR CLAW. Golden brown, caked with glaze, gleaming like a diamond among stones. This is what you have been hankering for, a meaty slab of fresh dough, infused with gooey cinnamon and fit for a king. -Ryan Duncan

It is the music of Chicago's BEAR CLAW that fits this form of desire. Formed in 2002, the band creates powerful, noisy, yet melodic songs utilizing its obtuse instrumentation of two bass guitars and drums. Members Rich Fessler (bass and vocals), Rob Raspolich (bass), and Scott Picco (drums and vocals) continue to push the possibilities of the trio while adhering to a strict "no filler" approach to creating songs with tools they wield.

Mother Of Mercy-IV: Symptoms of Existence (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Bridge 9
Tracks: 10

Formed in the spring of 2007, Mother Of Mercy plays contemporary metallic hardcore that draws some of the best elements of '90s HC with a well-executed tinge of metal. Their music is raw, abrasive and dark - highly influenced by Samhain, Undertow and Obituary - and a much-needed reviver of today's re-hashed "metalcore" sound. With several prior releases including the "No Eden" 7" and critically acclaimed "III" that was released last year on Six Feet Under Records and hailed as one of ScenePointBlank's "favorite records of the year," Mother Of Mercy's Bridge Nine debut full-length is nothing less than stellar and poised to be one of the best metallic hardcore releases of 2011.

Country: USA
Genre: Indie, Punk, Posthardcore.
Label: DIY
Tracks: 4

In case you haven’t noticed, trends seem to repeat themselves every twenty years. The past decade’s fascination with the 80′s should remind you of that. Fitting then that we’re in the middle of a total 90′s rock resurgence right now, which is exactly what Yeesh brings to the table on their new tape, “Little Stabs at Happiness”. Recorded at Vermont’s Bennington College, this will remind you of your favorite 7″s from the days of Doc Martens and baggy jeans. For me, it was reminiscent of the very first singles I got from At The Drive-In around 1997, unpolished, yet with alot of promise -OMG Vinyl

Daïtro - Vinyl Collected LP (2010)

Country: France
Genre: Emotive Hardcore, Screamo
Label: Adaigo 830
Tracks: 7

Here's Daïtro's latest LP which contains the out of print songs from the split LP with Sed Non Satiata, the split 7" with Ampere and the 2 songs that were on the US tour 7".
Basically, for me these are still some of Daïtro's best tunes to date. Daïtro play an intense style of emotive french hardcore similar to bands such as Sed Non Satiata, Amanda Woodward, and Aussiotot Mort. Daïtro is easily one the best bands today in this genre of music. Daïtro sees their band as an instrument to deliver political statements and thoughts. It might be cliche Daïtro continue the "its More Then Just Music" DIY ethic in the genre of "punk rock". Check them out if you haven't heard of them yet! Members of Daïtro also play in Baton Rouge. Label: Blinded Records, No Sanctuary, Teeth To Concrete, Yama Dori

The music played by Wilczy Szaniec can be described as a sort of hypnotic noise punk, with some disturbing undercurrents and loads of energy at the same time. While their songwriting bears some influence of the Polish bands from the middle 80's and early 90's, the songs themselves are definitely unique. Wilczy Szaniec is a "slavic punk" in the best sense of the word.

Modelo de respuesta polar (2010)

Country: Spain
Genre: indie, pop, shoegaze
Label: diy
Tracks:
4+2

Karysun - Until The End (2010)

Country: France
Genre: Metal, Punk, Stoner, Sludge.
Label: DIY, Destructure Records.
Tracks: 8

After a first full length, split records with Year Of No Light and Lords, as well as touring everywhere in europe; Karysun, stoner, crust & metal influenced punk duo from Caen France, recorded a new full length earlier this year. To keep the wall of down tuned guitar sound signature initiated by the previous recordings, Karysun went back to their now studio home, studio de la souleuvre with Guillaume Doussaud (Taint, Amanda Woodward, Aussitôt mort, headcharger) behind the mixing desk. They worked all together to get their more achieved material ever. Eight songs clocking almost 40 minutes is the result. Different landscape and atmospheres were reached, from straight forward crust punk to post rock progressions, from noise and technical metal riffs to minimalist metal punk rhythm. The duo has also been lucky enough to work with good friends and inspiring persons and vocalists such as Gerome Desmaison (Amanda Woodward), Dave Edwardson (Jesus Fucking Christ & Neurosis) Ryan Patterson (Black Cross & Coliseum). It was also time for new musical experiments and new instruments. Piano as well as three live drums can be heard. All together this is best material written and recorded from the band so far. Recorded in various places on two continent, mixed from april to july, mastered in september and october. Yes the band has chosen to take its time to have the thing correctly done.

Country: USA
Genre: Posthardcore, Emo, indie rock
Label: Self Released

The Brass is a chaotic, emotive posthardcore/ indie punk band from Brooklyn, NY featuring ex-members of On The Might Of Princes and Latterman. The Brass will you hit you hard from the very first note, but it will not knock you down. Instead, the melodic harmonies, the complex but not mind-numbing drumming and dueling guitars will ease you into your submissive position while the Brass has its way with you. While maintaining their ferociousness, the group is able to provide a beautiful ambiance that few bands can create with just a song. The Brass are definitely a must for fans of Life At These Speeds, A Day In Black And White, Stop It!, Wow, Owls!, and The Saddest Landscape need to check this band out. Gniyrg Gnaarg - From Mother Sun (2010)

Country: Finland
Genre: Doom, Stoner, Grunge.
Label: DIY
Tracks: 4

The idea of creating a stoner/doom band was sprung up in the minds of native Helsinkians Tommy and Leo in the early summer of 2008, probably at one of the many bars in Kallio, Helsinki. The band remained a brainchild of the two bassists (one of which had never touched a bass in his life) for over a year, until one night in early september 2009 when we found out that Inés, a Spaniard who had settled in Helsinki a few years earlier, wanted an excuse to reincarnate the drummer inside of her. A band was born. Our music is a combination of stoner rock, doom metal and grunge, and therefore we define our music as "Dungeon".

The music of Gniyrg Gnaarg has been heavily influenced by the likes of Black Sabbath (esp. Master of Reality), Kuyss, Electric Wizard, early Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Fu Manchu, Joy Division, My Dying Bride and several 60/70s hard rock/psychedelic bands.

Graf Orlock-Doombox EP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, grindcore, thrash
Label: Vitriol Records
Tracks: 6

Graf Orlock is a cinema-grind band from California, who weave an intricate mesh of conceptual brutality. Through the vehicle of late '80s and early '90s action films, Graf Orlock create a potent social commentary in a theme that permeates with the band's lyricism and live shows. Destination Time Yesterday, released on level plane records, explores a wide range of critical topics through the medium of concise, intense, and aesthetically rhythmic songs, coming to fruition in a chaotic sensory barrage. Hell yeah! Another release that I was highly anticipating. Once again, the sound samples on this release are hilarious and brilliant. Do yourself a favor and pick the Doombox 10" and Vitriol's other release Owen Hart-Earth Control. Definitely a must for anyone into heavy music! I can't wait for my copies. Young Adults - Black Hole (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Shoegaze, Rock.
Label: Amdiscs
Tracks: 13

"Black Hole" is the first full-length outing from Young Adults (compliments of AMDISCS), and this LP went on one of my "best of 2010" lists before I even got around to covering it here. I absolutely loved their demo when I wrote about it early last year, and "Black Hole" contains re-recorded versions of all five tracks from the demo alongside five new songs, two instrumental interludes, and a cover of the Wipers' "Over the Edge". When I last spoke of Young Adults I loosely described their sound as "a fusion of slightly new wave-ish punk, indie rock, and 'shoegaze'", and while there's definitely more to it than that, I'm not the most experienced listener with regard to such styles, so… that analysis still stands. It all boils down to super catchy songwriting that combines high-energy bursts with slower, plodding rhythms that take on a much moodier atmosphere. And much like the demo, the recording is absolutely drowning in a gritty haze of raw distortion and effects that play a huge role in defining the band's character. They really make use of some unusually rugged tones and mixing techniques, but the over-the-top approach works perfectly in the end. I always feel like I should have so much more to say, and especially since this was one of of my favorite releases of 2010, but… the music will do a better job than I ever will. Caravels is a 5-piece band from Las Vegas, Nevada who play an interesting mix of hardcore, posthardcore and 90's screamo, . A good way to describe the band is to picture City of Caterpillar and Portraits of Past or Funeral Diner mixed with hardcore/posthardcore bands such as Botch, Kill Sadie, and These Arms Are Snakes. Highly recommended and worth checking out. Great follow-up to their 2010 Floorboards EP. I can't wait for their full length to drop later this year. Wow, Topshelf keeps delivering the goods with incredible bands. Caravels fits in well with We Were Skeletons and Pianos Become The Teeth!

Vaccine-Crimes In Blood 5" (2011)

Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Painkiller records

Damn. This completely shreds. Vaccine is a 4 piece hardcore supergroup from Western Ma. (USA) featuring Will Killingsworth (Orchid, Ampere, Failures, etc),Matt Swift (Relics), Matt McKeown, Joe Shumsky (Glue). Crimes In Blood is Vaccine's follow-up to their 2010 Human Hatred 7". Crimes In Blood features 5 songs of in-your-face, intense, no frills, blistering, hardcore, that is powerful enough to kill small animals within a twelve mile radius when played at loud volume. 5 songs in about two minutes. Highly recommended!!

Label: HCNL Records
Tracks: 10

From what I understand, Providence, RI doesn't have the biggest hardcore or metal scene out there. When I visited the city less than a month ago, it seemed like crusty punk stuff was much more popular than anything remotely "heavy." Regardless of whether or not the above observations are correct, Providence does have Advocate, which is better than nothing. The band's first full-length, titled "From Soil Laced With Lyme," is probably one of the better "screamy metal" bands I've heard in a good while. It's far from ingenious, but it's certainly enjoyable. I imagine that if you like anything by Scarlet or Eyes Upon Separation, you'll probably take in Advocate just as easily.

The album begins with "Dawner," a sort of Daughters-esque track that sets the tone for the whole album, a tone which is chaotic and dark to say the least. Following that are "Potter's Field" and "Burrow," both of them resembling Converge's later material, specifically "Jane Doe." Track four is a short instrumental piece, which launches into "Pearl," again resembling Converge, especially the style in which the lyrics are written, i.e. introspective but still accessible to most listeners. "Sell By" through "Half Life" are the duller songs on the album, sounding more like Nientara and Heartscarved than anything else. "Consumed" is a slower song unlike all the other, fast-paced tracks, but it again eventually speeds up as it folds into the last song, "KYLMA TALVI LUMI MYRSKY," another instrumental that could have easily come off of Converge's "Caring and Killing."

It's also worthwhile to mention the artwork, too, which was done by Advocate's resident guitarist/tattoo artist Kevin Bledsoe. I only say this because A) the booklet folds out into a little mini-poster with a giant center piece that would make a great back tat, and B) Kevin is a nice guy. As a last note, the recording was done by none other than Kurt Ballou, so I guess it has that traditional "Ballou" sound, meaning it doesn't sound like shit, but I'm really beginning to wonder if bands realize that there are other talented producers out there as well. At any rate, the whole effort is very clean and even, albeit a bit two-dimensional and flat. The drumming is very quick, especially when it comes to rolls, and the guitar work is creative enough, though the vocals come off as monotone and a little too dry. -Lambgoat
