Elders-Blind Rage Lp (2011)

Country: USA

Genre: Hardcore, punk

Label: King Of Monsters

Tracks: 12

Damn, this release totally kills. Elders are a band from Tempe/Phoenix, Arizona who play fast, angry as hell hardcore punk with definite early DC/West Coast punk influences. Elders complete the package with snarled and venomous vocals and a negative disposition. Elders would be at home on deranged records. Do yourself a favor and give Elders a listen. A definite must for fans of Nomos, No Class, and Raw Nerve.

Country: USA
Genre: Posthardcore, hardcore
Label: Creator-Destructor
Tracks: 12

(By Request from the Band)

Wow, I was pretty impressed by Troubled Coast after listening to their latest release entitled Letters. Troubled Coast are a San Francisco, CA based band who play a great style of melodic hardcore and posthardcore. Troubled Coast's influences are varied, which keeps letters from sounding overly mainstream or overly produced. I pick up bits and pieces of bands such as La Dispute, Touche Amore, Soul Control, later era Hot Cross and possibly Quicksand. Overall, Letters is a great listen. I also included the band's 100 Miles From Home 10" and Vagabond Ep for you to check out as well.

Mala In Se - Mala In Se (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Noise Core, Noise Rock, Art Metal, Thrash, Math Rock, Experimental, Psychedelic.
Label: Phratry Records.
Tracks: 7+2

Mala In Se (Cincinnati, Ohio) is a three-piece noise-rock/art-metal band. A frenzied detour from the normal world of rock, punk and metal, the band de-constructs concepts from a large cache of musical genres, yet they've concocted a truly unique sound and vision.

The foundation of Mala In Se's sound begins with the (un)usual combination of guitar, bass, and drums. Then it becomes dense with layers of samples, feedback, and auxiliary percussion. Lyrics are delivered in numerous, unsettling ways via shrieks (Joseph Thompson) and yells (Andy Perkins). And since the completion of this album, newly acquired drummer Danny McPherson adds an even more urgent agility to the music.

The album shifts from enormous amounts of physical energy to teardrops of minimalist soundscapes. Tempos go from blindingly-fast to a sluggish crawl before you can even count the meter. This band is a genre-bursting amalgamation of post-punk/thrash/avant-garde/nosie/math-rock and new age, with a little nod to free jazz in a live setting. What holds it all together is confident musicianship that allows the listener to lock-in with the compositions.

The term 'Mala In Se' means "wrongs in themselves; acts morally wrong; offenses against conscience." It is a concept that spews from the band's lyrics which focus on subjects such as animal testing/animal cruelty, back-room deals and government conspiracies, environmentalism and self-awareness.

Young Widows-In And Out Of Youth And Lightness (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: posthardcore, noise rock
Label: Temporary Residence LTD.
Tracks: 9

In and Out of Youth and Lightness was produced by Young Widows and Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket) at The Funeral Home in their hometown of Louisville, KY. The musical palette remains fundamentally the same—singer-guitarist Evan Patterson's cavernous, warped blues riffs weighted by Nick Thieneman's earth-shaking bass and drummer Jeremy McMonigle's sturdy, shifting rhythms—but the augmented instrumentation and choral vocals lifts them to incredible new heights. With lyrical themes of emotional despair and domestic dissolution leading to inevitable catharsis, Youth and Lightness finds Patterson rising from his personal hell with a level of wisdom and maturity that most aggressive bands will never know. With a depth and ambition well beyond their years, Young Widows have stepped out of the shadows of their influences to become one of America's more interesting and spirited underground rock bands. In and Out of Youth and Lightness is an unquestionable breakthrough for the band and an inspiring force in the canon of heavy music.

Hell yes. This finally hit the web and definitely shows Young Widows returning with a darker, moodier, and more inspired approach to their style of music. In my opinion, this blows Old Wounds out of the water. In And Out Of Youth And Lightness will definitely make it on many year end "best of" lists for 2011. This is Young Widow's best material to date! Enjoy!

Ghostlimb-Infrastructure Lp (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Grind
Label: Vitriol Records
Tracks: 12

Ghostlimb is a three-piece hardcore/punk band from southern California formed in 2006. Ghostlimb Presents a ridiculously pissed hardcore sound with the elements of melody, thrash and a general poor disposition, compiling all the rage a minute long song can handle along with sprinklings of social critique and dissatisfied sarcasm. Ghostlimb features members of Graf Orlock and their sound brings to mind bands such as His Hero Is Gone, Cursed, and Catharsis mixed with a bit of punk melody. Another great record I was really psyched to see being released this year. Fans of Alphinist and Iron Hand need to give this record a listen. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

Pygmy Lush-Old Friends LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Indie, folk, slowcore
Label: Lovitt Records
Tracks: 12

Pygmy Lush, whose members spent time in some of Northern Virginia's most influential hardcore bands of the last decade including Pg.99, Majority Rule, Malady, City of Caterpillar and Crestfallen, return with their much anticipated third full-length, Old Friends. Pygmy Lush formed in the spring of 2005 on the very day two of their previous bands, Malady and Mannequin broke up. They started out by carrying on much of the same ferocity of their previous endeavors but a massive change was afoot. Somewhere in their early practices they had started four-tracking several quieter songs with acoustic guitars and minimal percussion. Their first record, Bitter River (Robotic Empire), was noise-punk tracks mixed in with some of the quieter songs. I can't begin to describe how good this album is. As was the case with Mount Hope, Old Friends finds Pygmy Lush, steering clear from the loud and fast punk displayed on Bitter River and the Turboslut split. The end result is twelve songs of morphine soaked musings with a dark atmospheric tinge. Old Friends will easily be one of my favorite releases for this year, along with Tideland's newest record. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

True Widow - As High As the Highest Heavens and from the Center to the Circumference of the Earth [2011]

COUNTRY: USA
GENRE : Slowcore, Shoegaze.
LABEL : Kemado.

Here is a band that has figured out how to play music that is traditionally recognized as “heavy” and “slow,” on traditional rock instruments, in a way that few have been able to accomplish: a melancholy, meditative approach to songwriting and soundscape that draws you in. They figured this out in the space of one album a self-titled debut from 2008. On As High As the Highest Heavens, they refine the work even further.

Big guitar, bigger drums and the biggest bass (played by D.H., Slim, and Nikki, respectively) effortlessly recreate the unending skies of prairie America, where storms blow across with fury, horizons are unencumbered by the choke of skyscrapers and electric light, and the atmosphere pushes you down. A rumbling backdrop of distortion churns away, both behind and within True Widow’s plaintive song structures, but never overpowers it. Across a 50-minute runtime, the nine songs here range from excavated alt-rock anthems (“Night Witches,” “Skull Eyes”) to methodical epics like “Boaz” and “Blooden Horse,” to triumphant bulldozers of sound like “NH,” which splits the difference between dirge and hymn, the instruments staring into the ground while D.H. and Nikki’s voices ascend to the clouds.

Plenty of you may balk at both the length and largesse expressed in the title of True Widow’s new album, but once its powers seep into your skull, you’ll likely find it impossible to doubt the magnitude of what’s at stake here – a band that is singlehandedly breaking rank from accepted genres, and carving its own path into history.

Pneu - Highway To Health (2011)

Country: France
Genre: Math Rock, Instrumental. Noise Rock
Label: Head Records
Tracks: 9

This guitar duo battery has been doing tours of the first major parts: the Trabendo in Paris Envy, No Means No to the Astrolabe Orleans. They go on tour in March 2008 and enslave an endless series of dates and France even before the release of their debut album, only with a 4 track demo in the pocket.

It is easy to bring other training tire guitar drums but tire goes much further and demonstrated a remarkable maturity for a young group while also providing energy for an amazing duo.

The band plays often in the middle of the room without being wired for sound, one side Lightning Bolt is undoubtedly one of their influences.

Country: USA
Genre: Punk, Noise rock, Grunge, Indie
Label: Robotic Records/Sons Of Vesta
Tracks: 9

Tideland is a grunge / punk rock three-piece from Sterling, Virginia featuring former and current members of Pg.99, Sail, and Pizza. Their debut LP Asleep in the Graveyard was a hazy, melodic sonic assault on your ears with elements of pop punk and indie rock. Tideland's second record Lost Bets continue this sound and provide the listener with 9 more songs of garagey, hazy pop punk tinged grunge and noise rock. This is an amazing record. I can't wait for a proper release. I found a digital copy on Amazon and had to do this post. Nicoffeine - Lighthealer Stalking Flashplayer (2011)

Country: Germany
Genre: Noise Rock, Psychedelic, Experimental, Progressive, Instrumental
Label: Blunoise
Tracks: 8

Let’s keep this straight from the beginning: what you are about to hear on this record is not for everyone. So consider yourself as part of an elitist circle, whose main interface can be seen as a sonic rollercoaster ride into the deepest crypts of dedication. Challenging – this is what it is: the distance between white noise and and actually, music is a shorter track here than with, let’s name it, Supertramp. Or Barclay James Harvest. Or pop music. Or a bit more special: Indie Rock.

Ah, how we love that term. Bollocks that is – so you better scrape it right away. Just be aware: what you are about to hear and what we are about to try in manifesting a worded description of this album has nothing, hear that? NOTHING in common with indie rock. Nicoffeine knows no boundaries. It also knows no enemies nor friends. The speed they ride in escaping common ground of musical expression and expectations is just plainly breathtaking. So that’s where it’s about to start: fascination. Once you started with the first note you will be sucked in this all-consuming denial of well-trodden paths contemporary music has been walking for ages now. Or to cut the words in a more archaic sense: They just fucking wanna be different. And hell, how they are: Guido Lucas, Jörg Schneider and Soheyl Nassary just fueled their spaceship tanks with ingredients like Krautrock, Noise, Avantgarde and sheer worship of volume. But once the engine starts about to run it’s all only fuel, while the exhaust brings forth an all-consuming vengeance towards said influences. Sure, Amon Düül II or Can would approve. If only they could stand the blasting uproar. But what makes it so? Nicoffeine’s tunes are deeply rooted in the goal to relinquish the long-established patterns of tonal creation. Let music create itself. In an almost hypnotic undertow they are creator and fascinated supervisor of what becomes sound at the same time.

Their sound is brutal, no question. But it’s also magnetic and melodical (well at least in the parallel universe you will be virtually transported once the tone clusters start rolling over you!). Compromise? For the sake of courtesy? Never. Not on this trip. Challenge the listener. It’s quite a postulation in 2011, innit?

Now is the question: are you with them? Are you gonna join them in their spastic dance on the graves of the shoegazing generation? Not that they would make you feel welcome in their company at all nor should you expect to be served a free lunch or just a friendly smile. They most certainly will be far away making a turn behind the next corner in the moment you feel to dance with them. But hey, no one said it would be easy. At least not for you.

Wow, I'm not sure if I need an exorcist or a lobotomy after listening to this. Divorce Party are a Michigan based experimental art damaged noise punk band who play a style of music that loosely resembles bands such as Men's Recovery Project, Arab on Radar, Chinese Stars, or Holy Molar. I could easily see the five songs on Divorce Party's Astrocongertion Oporium being released on 31G or Skin Graft. I know this has been all over the web, but I wanted to do a post and tell you how incredible this album is. Boston Ma's Defeater continue with their unique take on hardcore/punk and deliver fourteen tracks of metallic, gritty, and heartfelt hardcore on their latest album. Endless Days and Sleepless Nights is actually broken down into two different records. Endless Days showcase Defeater's unique brand of crushing and gritty hardcore complete with soaring/emotive vocals. The second record, Sleepless Nights showcases the band's singer/songwriting capabilities and offer up four additional songs of stripped down acoustic music that reminds me of a more depressing version of Chuck Ragan or Tom Gabel. Overall, an incredible record. On a side note, the packaging is incredible on this double lp and includes a 64 page book accompanying the record. Highly recommended!

God Harvest are a Tampa, Florida based band featuring current and former members of Five Suns, Now Soldiers, Coffin Dancer, Can't Stand It, Big Rats, Devout, and Shed For You. God Harvest originally formed in 2008 and play a great mix of secular/socio-political/grindcore/power-violence/hardcore. This has been one of the best demos I've heard so far this year second only to the Negative Standards I-V cassette. God Harvest would fit in well on Prank records and kind of remind me of a mixture of bands such as Enabler or older Trap Them mixed with some German style crust influenced hardcore. Wolves - Simulation.Transparency. Alienation 10" Repress (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, punk, screamo
Label: Clean Plate
Tracks: 4

Wolves was first conceived in early 2000 by Brad Wallace and Tim Glowik, who started playing guitar together after deciding they'd like to play in a band together again, after working together in the short lived Mars Colony. Wolves played it's first couple of shows in spring of 2001 as well as recording a demo, but it was a bit of a false start as the band had to spend some time regrouping and finding a new bass player shortly there after. In the Fall of 2001 the band really got going with the line up of Tim Glowik, Brad Wallace, Erik Hopp, and Andy Skelly. Wolves began playing shows regularly and recorded it's first record "Art.Culture.Work" for Coalition records. Coaltion put this record out around summer 2002 in time for Wolves first and only full U.S. tour.

Wolves spent all of June out on the road, and returned home to record two songs for a split 7" with friends and neighbors Ampere, for whom Andy also played drums. Wolves spent the next year playing local shows around New England and in the fall of 2002 recorded for the "Simulation.Transparency.Alienation" record on Coalition Records. This recording demonstrated a band that had been playing together for awhile, and was more ambitious in concept and content. Wolves continued to write songs through out this period, despite and increasingly difficult practice schedule to geographic hardship.

In May of 2003 Wolves and Ampere teamed up to celebrate the release of their split 7" on Moganono records, by playing two shows as the "Amherst Punkestra" combining both bands into one larger band and playing both bands songs. Later that summer Wolves hit the road for a brief period with friends Donna and Carly. Shortly after this Coalition released the "Simulation.Transparency.Alienation" record in early Fall of 2003. Wolves than began work on recording their final 5 songs, 4 of which would go to a split LP/CD with Transistor Transistor on Level-Plane records and one to a split 7" with Sinaloa to be released on Clean Plate records.

The Transistor Transistor split came out in time for an early 2004 European tour in which Transistor Transitor and Wolves joined forces. Both bands had a great time together, and Wolves probably experienced some of it's finer moments in live performance on this tour. Prior to this tour Wolves had already decided to part ways upon return due to geographic hardship and members growing in different directions creatively. Acknowledging that the time spent together as a band had been good, but that it was time to move on, Wolves played two last shows on January 30th, and 31st of 2004 in Amherst, and Boston, MA.

At their best Wolves was a band firmly rooted in emo hardcore of the early to mid nineties, but had ambition to make their influences uniquely their own. Wolves was concernced with the big picture and felt that the content of every aspect of the band was equally important, from songwriting and structure, to album artwork, and lyrics. Wolves records were often to be taken as a visual representation as much as a musical representation and influences were drawn from Avant-Garde art movements and 60's radicals as much as they were drawn from musical peers. Not afraid to challenge themselves and attempt to mix theory with practice, Wolves songs never repeated themselves and were decidedly unique whether in failure or success. Wolves records focused on letting individual pieces create a greater whole, thus putting greater expectation in involvement by the listening audience. Never satisfied in letting any one author's identity flourish Wolves music often took on a more decentralized approach and was never the labor of a single songwriter but more a collage of ideas coalesced by all four members playing together. In the end wolves leaves behind a body of work that showcases strengths and weaknesses, a sense of adventure, and an unwillingness to do anything but wear their influences on their sleaves while citiquing and deconstructing them at the same time.

For those interested in other projects Wolves members have been involved in, Andy played in the Last Forty Seconds, prior to Wolves, and currently plays in Ampere. Brad Played in Orchid prior to Wolves, has also played in Bucket Full of Teeth, and currently plays in Transistor Transistor. Erik is playing in Snake Apartment. Great album by a really underrated band. Get the repress. It's definitely worth your time and money!

Od Vratot Nadolu - Жива (2011)

Country: Macedonia
Genre: Sludge, Punk, Noise
Label:
Fuck yoga, Superfi, Insulinaddicted
Tracks: 8

Od Vratot Nadolu is a two-piece act from Macedonia that consists of bass, drums, and vocals, and I believe "Ziva" is their debut EP (which I was hooked up with by Fuck Yoga Records, who released it in cooperation with SuperFi Records and Insulin Addicted Records). As would be expected of most any bass-centric, powerviolence-leaning band, these guys have and will continue to draw comparisons to Man is the Bastard (which is obviously not a bad thing) with these eight tracks in about 18 minutes of winding, distorted bass runs, hammering percussion, and a dual vocal attack of assorted shouts and growls.

Don't expect a lot of explosive, chaotic speed, though. In fact, what works so well about this material is that there are a lot of pounding, midpaced tempos that benefit from the breathing room that a two-piece band offers. The recording is also rugged but clear, and suits their stripped down approach quite well. Every now and then it sounds like they might be throwing in some keyboard textures, but maybe they're just applying weird, atmospheric effects to some of the basslines? That being said, they keep things pretty straightforward for the most part, and that's perfectly fine. I actually prefer generally tried and true approaches to this particular niche, and Od Vratot Nadolu totally nails it. --Aversionline
