Eshas-S/T 7" (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Metal
Label: Six Feet Under Records
Tracks: 3

Initially Eshas was to be a one time collaboration between old friends Robert Fish and Aaron Edge with a song recorded between bedrooms in Seattle and Portland. After creating music in some very memorable bands over the last two decades -- 108, Himsa, The Judas Factor, Ressurection and Iamthethorn, amongst others -- it only made sense that one day the two friends would create something together. However, one song in and Eshas, the band, was born. Eshas is music outpoured so haphazardly, so unrefined, that it cannot be mistaken for anything but the guttural cry of those who demand more from their music than catchy hooks and rehashed tragicomic metal. Great stuff! Enjoy!

Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate)-Home After Three Months Away 7" (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Emo, Indie Rock
Label: Stiff Slack
Tracks: 4

(Band Bio): Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) is a band from the tiny town of Fenton, Michigan that started in 2006. It consists of Keith and Cathy Latinen, a heroic husband and wife combo who love the crap out of each other. There have been a lot of other members, and maybe someday there will be a few more- but for right now, it’s just Keith and Cathy. And that’s ok! Home After 3 months Away is EE's latest 7" and features 4 new songs of 90's emo/indie rock influenced by bands such as Mineral, Boy's Life and other Deep Elm style bands. Seriously, Empire! Empire! is one of the frontrunners who play this style of music. Props to circling the drain for originally posting this 7".Enjoy!

Vaz - Chartreuse Bull (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Noise Rock, Post Hardcore
Label: Damage Rituals
Tracks: 11
Lengh: 35'

Weird, who would of thought that 2011 would be the year we hear new material from both Vaz and Hammerhead? And the oddest part is that I was expecting the Hammerhead…but not the Vaz stuff so much. You’d think it would have been the other way around, right? I’d pretty much given up hope on hearing new tunes from Vaz after a couple or so years of wondering what the hell happened to Pink Confetti (I’m looking at you Narnack), what was supposed to be the bands next album. However, whatever trouble is attributed to that record the guys have pulled through and moved forward by recording a follow up record called Chartreuse Bull that has just been released by the cassette label Damage Rituals. Have no fear you tape deck-less people out there, it’s also available digitally…sans one track.

Given the overall weirdness and almost horror movie like sounds that made up the bands previous album The Lie That Matches the Furniture back in ’05, Chartreuse Bull is a much different sounding record than I’d prepared myself to hear. This is Vaz at quite possibly the most straightforward sounding I’ve heard them on record, with the cassette only track “Neon Sunrise” really the single thing breaking it up midway through. Otherwise this is an assault of the high speed open ended tempos that the band has strung together for over ten years now and boy am I happy to hear it. It’s been far too long really, seeing as how Vaz created some of the most truly bizarre sounding but yet incredibly catchy riffs that I’ve probably heard. I do miss the strange, almost sci-fi aspect to their sound but if their going to replace it with full on groove driven noise…then I’m not going to complain one single bit. Check it out. -Built on a Weak Spot

God Mode-Demo (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore/Punk

Label: If You Make It
Tracks: 9

I came across this demo when browsing the latest free releases from If You Make It , a great label that's helped put out releases by bands like The State Lottery, Thousandaires, ETC.

Band Bio: This is the 9 song demo for God Mode. Formed by four gentlemen getting on in their twenties who missed the energy and passion in the hardcore landscape that they grew up in (late 90's early 2000's) in the New York Tri-State Area. The band's name is a reference to the code "IDDQD" in Doom 2, a DOS based PC game.God Mode is a bare-bones hardcore band. This is great stuff. I'm not going to even bother with descriptions, because these guys wear their influences on their sleeves. Enjoy!

Cave - Pure Moods EP (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Krautrock
Label: Drag City
Tracks: 3
Lengh: 25'

With Pure Moods, Chicago’s Cave mingles the spirits of mid-70s Can with Midwestern garage and psych-rock to create a tight, 25-minute swirl of mesmeric rhythms and primal vocalization. The record’s title may recall an infomercial compilation disc series featuring Enya, latter day Sting, and the theme from X-Files, but its contents are considerably more engaging than mere Hallmark bargain bin miscellany.

“Hot Bricks” is the glitchy lead-off, driven by a propulsive kraut-rock beat. It’s a frenetic piece of music with aggressive rhythmic patterns anchored by the sound of a phone off its hook. “Teenager” perpetuates the frantic theme, stuttering along with thumping toms and adolescent intensity, while “Brigette’s Trip,” which constitutes the record’s second half, is a guitar-led piece reminiscent of Kraftwerk. A thirteen-minute affair, the track reveals itself slowly. It’s all sharp angles at first, before peaking in a haze of tremolo and cymbal crashes at its midpoint. The drums change tack for the comedown, emerging through the sheen of glittering guitar delay for a meditative epilogue in 7/4 time.

All in all, Pure Moods represents yet another intriguing twist in the psych-rock storyline. With its release, Cave once again proves that it possesses an unusual knack for genuinely compelling instrumental rock music, an increasingly impressive quality in our age of ever-decreasing attention spans.-PopMatters

Pleasure Leftists-S/T 12" (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Post punk, indie rock
Label: Fan Death Records
Tracks: 6

Pleasure Leftists play deliberately ‘gothy’ but catchy post-punk. They’ve got a jaggy and sort of poppy drive to their songs but they’ve soaked them in so much reverb that a dark vibe overshadows all that. I feel a little inadequate when talking about goth or deathrock or whatever and I’ve only ever skirted around the edges of post-punk, but I feel like this EP falls close enough to today’s ‘independent rock’ boundary to make a review written purely in throwback comparisons pretty pantomimic. Basically, this isn’t far off hitting a happy medium between bands like Mazes and darker stuff along the lines of Blessure Grave with some pop sensibilities thrown in. It’s pretty enjoyable, although the vocals sometimes get a bit too ridiculous for my liking (it’s the ‘goth’ thing, right?) and a couple of times the repetitiveness irks me. By and large though, this is a nice listen and I can see me spinning it a few times before giving it to a friend who’ll appreciate it more. -Collective Zine

*I think this pretty much nails Pleasure Leftist's sound better than I can describe. Defintely a must for fans of The Estranged, Gang Of Four, and Wire. I'd also say the fuzzy reverb adds to the band's sound, making this 12" appealing and underrated. Definitely worth checking out.

I Had Plans-The Perception Of Beauty Is A Moral Test LP (2011)

Country: Portugal
Genre: Posthardcore, Post rock
Label: GRRR records
Tracks: 8

Portugal's I Had Plans is a band featuring members of Adorno and play a great style of posthardcore/emotive hardcore with elements of postpunk. I hear elements of bands like Adorno and Sinaloa mixed with the discordance and angularity of bands like Drive Like Jehu, At The Drive-In, or Mustangs & Madras. Great stuff. I was psyched to see a full length after hearing I Had Plan's demo released last year.

Bio: This record is built on the familiar awareness of subversive spirit and positive activism trough art or social intervention criticizing the contemporany ways with a very personal approach. It's a package containing more than eruptive guitars that are played against each other in a change of emotions (melody and beat). It's also a documented narrative, a portrait translated in songs with impeling and intricate sound design.

Callusing and fast metal fused with D-beat punk and hardcore, Tucson, AZ's Hellhorse is a unique blend of precision and raw aggression. Lyrically, "Decade Of Dust" paints a bleak and mysterious picture, as much for fans of Watain and Celtic Frost as it is for those of Catharsis, Ringworm and Gehenna (US). Genre: Folk, Psychedelic, Indie, Dream Pop, Grunge
Label: Phonographic Arts
Tracks: 4
Lengh: 9'

Philadelphia’s Creepoid recently played an over packed record release show with their hometown hero Kurt Vile and stamped themselves as Philadelphia’s next “constant hit makers”. Creepoid sounds like Mazzy Star lamenting a love affair with the Telescopes, and the result is a rainy day staple. Although Creepoid’s first release is dreamy and understated, recently performed tracks hint towards a more explosive, primal future.

List/Perfect Future Split LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Emo, Indie rock
Label: Count Your Lucky Stars, Dine Alone, Ezes Code, Hanr, Internale Records
Tracks: 10

With this record, two cliches come to mind: "better late than never" and more appropriately "worth the wait."Perfect Future offer up 5 new songs that they recorded in December 2009. A number of these songs have been played on their tours and on their most recent tour they made a cd-r version in order to have something new for merch. This is also the last recordings with former bassist Clinton Kitzmiller and drummer Stephen Schrock. The songs are what you have come to love from Perfect Future: loud emo with loads of riffs. These songs are much more personal than political, so the sung/shout vocals fit the heartache. The List side showcases the bands entire recorded output. This short lived, Portland based band played emo that sounds like it came straight out of a time capsule from the 90's. You're guaranteed to wear out the grooves on their side of the record. Unfortunately, List broke up early when this record was being planned due to the deportation of their guitarist back to the UK.

*Damn, this is another amazing record. Highly recommended. Enjoy!

Glory Kid Limited - Summer 2011 Sampler

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Indie

Label: Glory Kid Limited
Tracks: 12

(Label Request)About Glory Kid LTD: We stood watching a slow death of an era occur right in front, where innocence was constant throughout predecessors, where emotion held more value than currency. Slower it breathes, with a slight wheeze it exhales life. But with this burden; painful persistence gave birth to a new social class of determination that can only come from young angst and precise hatred toward a world that have left them in the wake of another’s unraveled legacy. This label represents a united front for independent artist that seek lawfulness in a community that is corrupt just as much as it is not. Where mainstream ideals have infiltrated the very code of ethics we built our foundation upon. As individuals and a community, must enact our human right to artist freedom. The right to create without fear of censorship or exploitation. This label is the very mark that will and has encompassed that strength and freedom to do so. To help reconstruct, produce and support the most fundamental points to ensure quality over quantity. When you see this icon on any format, remember that there is hope for the future of artist independence in a globalized, commercial driven commerce. For underneath this gear wheeled sun lies our glory within reach, and though we are just kids, we shall regain it.

Glory Kid LTD. is a small label out of Seattle, WA run by Andy Gomez, a super-cool and down to earth guy. Andy's DIY ethic and support of the indie scene is what sets this label apart from some of the bigger labels out there. Andy's small operation has put out releases by Agostos Espias, Convulsions, Run With The Hunted, The Seperation, Maladie, and Drowing With Our Anchors among other great releases. Do yourself a favor and check out the label and distro. Glory Kid also has a small, but killer distro. as well. Oathbreaker - Maelstrom LP (2011)

Country: Belgium
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, metal

Label: Deathwish Inc.
Tracks: 9

Oathbreaker are a brutal Punk/Metal band from Ghent, Belgium. To outsiders, Belgium is a country rich in cultural diversity and history. However to its residents it is also a country of crime, corruption, and political incompetence. For the Ghent based Oathbreaker, the festering blood that surfaces from these social cracks and fissures burns as fuel for their creative engine. After their formation in early 2008, Oathbreaker released a debut 7"EP on the British label Thirty Days Of Night Records. The release was well received by many worldwide and propelled the band to tour Europe. There they shared stages with Entombed, Amen Ra (whom they share a member with), Blacklisted, Trap Them, and more. There they honed their craft, developing into one of the most interesting metallic bands out there today.Deathwish are proud to announce the release of "Maelstrom", the new album from Oathbreaker on July 5th, 2011.Recorded in Belgium by Michael Neyt and Lander Cluyse, mixed by Kurt Ballou (Converge), and mastered by Alan Douches (Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan), "Mælstrøm" is a swirling mix of Metal, Punk, and Hardcore destruction. Similarities in Oathbreaker's ferocity to bands like Cursed, Rise And Fall, and From Ashes Rise are apparent, but merely a flash point for them. Opener "Origin" strikes hard of the gate, crashing down with swirling guitars, thunderous drumming, and vicious vocal stylings. From there, Oathbreaker push the limits of brutal with "Hierophant", a crushing mid paced masterpiece infected with a "Wolverine Blues" spirit. While songs "Thoth" and "Glimpse Of The Unseen" carry a Doom Metal like candor that would even make Tom G. Warrior proud. Song after song, the chaos ensues within the Oathbreaker vortex as they explore all shades of heavy. Then, as suddenly as their rage appeared on the horizon, it recedes to reveal the album's mesmerizing title track "Maelstrom". A dark acoustic passage that shows Oathbreaker's ability to not only unleash a fury, but control the musical super storm within. -Deathwish

*Wow. I can't begin to describe how good Oathbreaker's debut Lp is. I think deathwish pretty much nailed it as far as influences are concerned. Lüger - Concrete Light (2011)

Country: Spain
Genre: Progressive Rock, Krautrock, Space Rock, Post Punk
Label: Giradiscos, Marxophone
Tracks: 7
Lengh: 32'

Ritual - Paper Skin LP (2011)

Country: Germany
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Reflections Records
Tracks: 10

Describing RITUAL to someone who has not experienced this band live is a difficult thing to do. In fact, that's what the band is all about: Getting lost in the moment, denying the present, saying “no” to everything. RITUAL are doing so for more than five years now. Hitting the roads of Europe as often as they can and playing as hard as they can. On this journey all the experiences have shaped their sound and their performance that has still remained spontaneous and authentic. 2011 sees the band offering their new opus to the world: “Paper Skin” reaches a new level in their development seeking distance from their rock-orientated take on hardcore, The songs do not depend so much on riffs but on a deep atmosphere that is built up by layered guitars. The outcome is more intimate then ever before and perfectly catches the mood that is evoked by the personal and even sensual lyrics. RITUAL however didn’t back down and still are as as energetic, aggressive and hard as ever before and perfectly demonstrates what it means to play in a punkband. -Reflections Records

*Wow. This is a great album. I always liked Germany's Ritual but was really surprised by how unconventional this record sounds at times. It definitely has a Refused or Snapcase sort of vibe, not by sound, but by the forward-thinking nature of the song structures and execution of the music. Great stuff. Enjoy!

Damn, here's another killer 7" from A389 records. I first came across Withdrawl after hearing their Unknown Misery ep and was psyched to see this posted on a few other blogs. Withdrawal play a great style of metallic hardcore punk that is equally inspired by bands such as Integrity and Ringworm, as well as lesser known bands such as Rorschach or Groundwork. The thing that makes these bands stand apart is their ability to seamlessly meld hardcore, metal, and punk together with an end result that keeps the band from sounding overly contrived, cheesy, or commercialized. "Bad Luck" is an appropriate title, seeing as after the release of their last full-length in 2005 and a few solid years of touring, everything stopped due to a few strokes of bad luck that slowed the band but did not stop them. Their spazzy, metallic grind/hardcore punk is back and is as politically and socially driven as ever. Hell yes. I've been waiting to hear this and was not disappointed one bit. 11 Tracks of insanely technical and brutally calculating music. Get schooled. This is Ed Gein's first album since 2005's Judas Goats and Dieseleaters. Amazing!

Tracks: 8
Lengh: 24'

We are a hardcore band from Sweden. Released our first demo in the beginning of february, and now our debut EP released 29/4/2011. We are really happy with the feedback we have gotten so far and we try to spread our word around as much as possible. We just uploaded the EP for free download over at mediafire. Its zipped with a lyric-file and the cd-cover, front and back. Crash/Existence will also be available on D.I.Y.-CD-R(plastic sleave, printed cover, flyer), tees are also in the making, black/white with 2 different designs done by our awesome bassist Tintin. CD and t-shirts will be ready for sale early june. Our sound is agressive and intense in a dark/crusty atmosphere, influences varied from Converge, Throats and Botch to Martyrdöd, Cursed, Skitsystem etc. After several lineup-changes, we finally feel confortable with our stable line-up and will continue doing music that is relevant and important to us.

Dear Psychedelic Speed Freaks the world over, it has been a long time coming. For what? -you know exactly what I’m gonna preconize. Enough of slapdash High Rise/Mainliner name-droppings. This is it. This is The Fucking it. An unapologetically virtuosic, dud-free by default, dead-right-on-your clogged-central-nerves psychedelic earthmover is on standby to expunge all your doldrums and self-percieved mediocrities. To be honest with you, they even sound better than High Rise and Mainliner. What more do I need to say? Their identity is eclipsed by the daredevil SUNFLAREs save for the origin – Lisboa, Portugal. I think it is not sly promotional hermitsm but a lack of information. Anyway, visit Cubic Pyramid for the touch of actual grabbing. -Perfection of Perplexion

Destruction Unit-Sonoran LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Indie rock, Post punk, lo-fi, experimental
Label: Volar Records
Tracks:6

In the punk-rock prime of his youth, Ryan Rousseau (aka Elvis Wong) saw himself cutting his teeth as the drummer for the Wongs, eventually hooking up with Jay Reatard to play in the Reatards, and dividing his time between the former band in Arizona and the latter in Memphis. Ryan soon recorded the first Destruction Unit 7?, a blistering slab of synth-punk, which eventually led Ryan to Tuscon?s drony, synth-heavy Digital Leather. Ryan in turn filled in from time to time on drums for Jay and Alix?s Angry Angles, and eventually found himself recording two more LPs under the Destruction Unit moniker with help from Jay and Alicja starting up the southwestern punk act Tokyo Electron, and exploring his more melodic, post-punk roots with Earthmen and Strangers. After the death of Jay Reatard in early 2010, Ryan resurrected Destruction Unit, this time emphasizing more psych/kraut/desert rock influences on their first LP, Eclipse, in FDH Records. For their second LP, Sonoran, the group has almost completely stripped away whatever synth-punk leanings they were holding on to, creating a purely ?desert-at-night? psych/kraut/space-rock album best enjoyed on the long nightly drives through the barren wastelands of the Southwest.

Khann-Erode LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, post hardcore, metal
Label: Black Market Activities
Tracks: 9

Khann has an unabashed, frenetic vibe reminiscent of the un-bastardized roots of the '90s screamo genre. At its softest, there are shades of These Arms Are Snakes and Fugazi, and at the most intense, there are similarities to Mastodon or the cleaner moments of Converge. Now available on colored vinyl. Wow. This is another great release for Black Market Activities. Definitely a must for fans of These Arms Are Snakes and Tombs. Great stuff!

Bullshit tradition._.Empty eyes(2011)

Country: USA
Genre:punk,veganhardcore
Year: 2011
Label: DIY
Tracks: 6

EMPTY EYES. In a world this cold, it's hard to be a fire when you're born against an icy wall that you could never be enough to break. I've seen what we can become, what we're capable of, and how long it takes to learn to be yourself. Empty eyes, empty fate. I've seen you take her hand, like she was yours, glazed over drunken eyes (empty) rolling back and forth. Yeah, I've felt helpless before, but not empty like you pulling her through that door, as she mouthed “help me” through the window. Empty eyes, empty fate. And I wanted you to die. For a second, I wished there was a god, and a hell that I could send you to, but there's nothing, just like you. Empty eyes, empty fate. And in your empty eyes, your empty fate awaits, your empty soul, worthless.

THE INVISIBLE HAND. A master plan, hatched with a fatal flaw. Empire's crumble under the weight of it all. A sudden darkness, rising fast, razing a structure never fated to last. Our consumption, like a cancer on the world. Stolen resources, leaving eco-systems destroyed. Built on violence, hatred bred through greed and fear. Wars waged in the name of excess and realized through deceit and lies. Forced from birth to buy our lives from politicians, police and priests, who sell nothing but lies. A war with ourselves, a war we can not win, an endless void, lost before it begins. It must be easy to justify your wealth through trickle down theory so you don't hate yourself. Well, you don't have to, because we already do, and that shallow oversight will be the death of you.

ANIMALS. I can't forget their cries of misery. I wont forgive atrocities. When I look into their eyes all I feel is rage for the animals. Humanity should be ashamed for allowing this slavery continued unchallenged for so many years. No act of forgiveness can ever right this wrong. Agony felt for so fucking long. The animals are not our slaves.

THERE IS NO HELL BUT WAR IS CLOSE. At the hands of our will, she meets her end. Covered in blood wounded chest broken bones cut of breasts raped and left there for dead. Caught in between, revolution and greed, an atrocity waged in a war fueled by need to control those who differ from what we believe. At the hands of our will. Our empathy, overshadowed by lust. White lines dollar signs and a cross to distract from a view beyond what we can touch. The flame of humanity's dead, as darkness sets in. Unless we rekindle what burns inside us, sacrificing false needs for a more humane life. At the hands of our will. As long as we believe in absurdities we will continue to commit atrocities.

SWORDS. Arial drones and robot soldiers with guns, grenades and predetermined codes. When their control center crashes they have minds of their own. Remote controls in cowards hands, war machines deployed to rape the land. Prime directive: exterminate. Hide behind a screen while you destroy families, a new type of arms race for wealthy countries.

DELUSIONS. Liar. There's nothing sacred, no deeper meaning in your faith, your prayers aren't worth more than atheistic beliefs. Guilt handed down from sin at birth to destroy our minds and spirits, hides the truth. An empire built on a cross. Paraded and exploited hungry masses consumed by false acclamations, with evil eyes and sharpened teeth, a thirst for power. Lies. Delusions of grandeur. There's nothing god has, you can't find within yourself. We're not in debt for our existence and you don't have to hate yourself and waste your love on what we all know is just a hoax. There is no god.

Genre: Hardcore/Punk
Label: Apocaplexy Records

Deathrite-S/T LP (2011)

Country: Germany
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Crust
Label: Per Koro Records
Tracks: 8

Damn. Deathrite are a phenomenal German hardcore band that seemlessly melds a dark metallic style of hardcore made popular by bands like Nails, Trap Them, and Baptists with late 90's earache style music (Napalm Death/Coalesce). The eight songs on this album are incredible. Great stuff. Links courtesy of Perception Through Dissonance.
