Whirr - Distressor LP (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Shoegaze, indie rock
Label: Rough Trade Records/Tee Pee Records
Tracks: 7

Whirr is a San Francisco, CA based band featuring members of the mighty and amazing Deafheaven. Whirr was in existence before Deafheaven and features a great style of neo-shoegaze that takes the melodies and style of shoegaze and adds a punk sensibility, which equates to a band that isn't afraid to push the envelope in developing a unique take on this style of music. Whirr does an incredible job in creating dramatic songs of soothing, razor sharp guitar textures backed by soft female vocals. With their truly DIY take on things, Whirr updates and recreates the sonic soundscapes previously pioneered by the likes of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine. Whirr is a must listen for fans of Broken Water, True Window, as well as DeafHeaven. Whirr has also released a new two song 7" entitled June on Tee Pee records and is preparing to release a new full length on the same label as well. Great stuff! Enjoy! I recently purchased Whirr's latest 7" entitled June. Enjoy!

Sea Haven - Ghost 12" (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Posthardcore, Emo, screamo
Label: Creator/Destructor
Tracks: 7

Here's another band I recently came across that I was really impressed with during my recent haul of purchases from redscroll records this month. Sea Haven are a young Los Angeles, CA band who play a great style of music that incorporates a wide variety of styles and influences with great results. On the one hand, Sea Haven embrace modern emotive posthardcore and punk that's influenced by bands such as late era Jawbreaker, Seaweed, as well as modern emo influenced by bands such as Make Do And Mend and Small Brown Bike. What sets Sea Haven apart from the pack is an underlying current of emotive hardcore/screamo that gives the band an intensity that's missing when bands rely on the modern emo sound. I can't help but think that this is what Make Do And Mend or Title Fight would sound like if they jammed with bands like Sinaloa and Pianos Become The Teeth. Ghost is a really impressive debut 12" by this young Los Angeles band. Keep your eyes peeled for Sea Haven. I see this band really blowing up when they release their new album entitled Winter Forever, which is set to be released in November on Run For Cover records. Do yourself a favor and pick up Ghost on lp if you can. The last two songs on the albums are stripped down/acoustic versions of songs on the ep. Great stuff! Highly recommended! Enjoy!

L'Enfance Rouge – Bar-Bari (2011)

Country: France, Italy, Morocco
Genre: Noise Rock, Post Hardcore
Label: Wallace Records

Tracks: 8
Lenght: 33'

The Red Childhood. First a French-Italian Trio, then a Occidental-Oriental Quartet, based in between Reykjavik and Borj El Khadra. More than 1800 concerts from 1995, from Vilnius to Tbilissi, from Swinoujscie to Sevilla as from Prague to Tunis, invited by international festivals, theatres and clubs. Electricity. Blue lights. Still uncontrolled.

Avant-rock. Without boundaries, neither musical nor geographical. The European press talks about them as crossroads between introversion and acceleration, between cerebralism and wildness or barbarity. Unpredictables.

"Rostock-Namur" the last-but-one album of L' Enfance Rouge has been released totally free downloadable on the web site (with more than 17.000 downloads). BAR-BARI, the new Trio album, was released in January 2011.

If the whole occident is to be closed again on itself, its musicians are getting internationalists. By specifying that on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea there was of course no will to carry out a fashionable and well-formatted world-music, nor orientalist tourism or intellectual colonialism. From January 2010, l’enfance rouge is now building up another fabulous project, this time with the great and world famous arabic singer LOTFI BOUCHNAK.

Less Life - Today Will Be Ours LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, punk, Noise rock
Label: How Soon Is Now Records
Tracks: 7

Followers of this blog know that I'm a huge Black Kites and In First Person fan and I was beyond psyched to receive an email from Tom, who plays in Less Life allowing me to review and post Less Life's debut Lp. Less Life are a New Jersey based band boasting ex and current members of Black Kites, The Assistant, This Ship Will Sink, and You And I. Less Life's debut LP entitled Today Will Be Ours features 7 new songs of music that draws from a variety of influences. Less Life retains the "Black Kites" sound stylisiticly, but adds adds an abrasive, passionate, and metallic style of hardcore with elements of noise rock. I can hear influences such as Dead Guy, Botch, Achilles, and Engineer within Less Life's sound as well. The seven songs on Today Will Be Ours blaze by, pummeling the listener senseless in about fifteen minutes, so prepare yourself for a good old-fashioned ass whoopin'. Less Life is poised to do really great things, so keep your eyes peeled on the band in 2011. On a side note, if you live in CT, Less Life is playing a great show being promoted by gravity collective at the American Legion in Branford CT on 9/30/11. Less Life will be sharing a bill with CT's own Heavy Breath, Raindance from MA, Convulsions from RI, Suburban Scum from NJ, among others. Great stuff! Enjoy. New download link! All songs are now seperate MP3's. Kick ass album!

Fires Of Waco - Old Ghosts Never Sleep LP (2011)

Country: Australia
Genre: Posthardcore, Emo, indie rock, shoegaze, punk
Label: Poison City Records
Tracks: 13

I love accidentally stumbling upon great bands by accident, as was the case when I first heard Fires Of Waco. Fires Of Waco's latest album came with my Bridge And Tunnel Rebuilding Year Lp preorder yesterday. On a whim I purchased this lp for $10.50 via No Idea records and was really impressed by Old Ghosts Never Sleep. Fires Of Waco are a Brisbane, Australia based band featuring ex-members of The Gifthorse, Just Say Go! and Values Here. Fires Of Waco play an impressive style of Posthardcore, Emo, shoegaze, and indie rock, and punk that really makes me think of bands such as Small Brown Bike, Bridge And Tunnel, and Title Fight, if these bands were combined into one. Add dynamics reminiscent of At The Drive-In and flourishes of shoegaze and you begin to see where the band is going with their sound. Old Ghosts Never Sleep is the band's debut Lp and features thirteen original songs. Seriously, I can't stop listening to this album. The songs are that good. Fans of this genre of music really need to give this band a listen. I see many great things happening for this band. Highly recommended! Enjoy! I also included Fires Of Waco's debut Ep entitled In The Wake Of..., which was released on Arrest records in 2010. In The Wake Of... features nine songs and show the band honing their sound to what it is with Old Ghosts Never Sleep.

Idylls - Amps For God/Plague Hell 7" (2011)

Country: Australia
Genre: Experimental, hardcore, punk, screamo, metal
Label: Monolith Records
Tracks: 3

Idylls are an Australian based band that plays a discordant, off-kilter, and experimental style of music that incorporates elements of hardcore, punk, screamo, metal, and crust. At first, this seems absurd, but the formula really works for the band. Imagine Dillinger Escape Plan, Trap Them, Orchid, and Alpinist thrown in a blender and served with a healthy dose of hate and paranoia. Idylls would be the bastard child of this experiment. The Three songs on Amps For God/Plague Hell aim straight for the jugular, leaving you feeling bruised, beaten, and violated in every possible nasty way you can imagine. Poor Lily - ST LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Postpunk, posthardcore
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 13

Poor Lily is a Bronx, New York based band featuring members of legendary hardcore bands Murphy's Law, Sick Of It All, Beyond, Ashcan H2O, and Lament And Burn. Musical pedigree aside, I was beyond stoked upon listening to the thirteen songs included on Poor Lily's self titled debut Lp. I love the music on this album and was having a hard time coming up with a way of describing Poor Lily's style of music. Poor Lily plays a dynamic, tight, angular, discordant, jazzy, and at times off-kilter style of posthardcore and postpunk that has a really cool no-wave vibe. Picture The Minuteman, Fugazi, and Dead Kennedy's mixed with the melodic aspects of bands such as Dag Nasty and Seven Seconds. Throw in a bit of a Wipers and Drive Like Jehu influence, and what you have is thirteen songs of music that has a tense, hectic, feel with vocals that sound like the lead singer is on the verge of having a nervous breakdown. Great album. Poor Lily is another band that came out of left field for me. It's great to see members of legendary hardcore bands still pushing the envelope with creativity in a scene that sometimes gets stagnant in terms of rehashing cookie cutter hardcore and punk. Great stuff! Enjoy!

97-shiki - Showing Teeth Is A Good Decision (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Punk Rock, Avant garde, post punk, noise rock, math rock
Label: DIY

Tracks: 6
Lenght: 17'

Six songs of frantic, choppy art punk from Chicago. The spazzing is held together by an almost funky bass, and right when things feel like they’re about to fly off the handle, they throw in a shout-along or a clutch guitar part to ground you again. Considering that this band proves over and over how they can stop on a dime, the resulting songs are catchier than they have any right to be. I’ve seen this band live a couple of times, and they are even tighter and more powerful in person. If you’re into any of the following bands, there’s something on this little puddle of plastic that you will enjoy: The Ex, The Minutemen, Fugazi, Ornette Coleman, Gang Of Four. -Razorcake

Country: Switzerland
Genre: Hardcore/Punk
Label: Take It Back/Start A Fire Records
Tracks: 19

Unveil is a Swiss vegan straightedge band who play a great style of metallic/90's influenced hardcore music. I must admit that I wasn't familiar with the band before hearing their split Lp with Deadverse. The band uses the tried and true formula of hardcore that includes chugging/midpaced rhythms, pulsing bass grooves, harshly yelled vocals, a few faster tempos that touch on a little more of an old school hardcore influence as well. I was really impressed by Unveil's songs on their split Lp and decided to track down the songs from their other two 7"s as well. Unveil released the Destruction Wherever I Go 7" in 2009 and that their Hypnopaedia 7" in 2010. Great band. Fans of Damages, Unbroken, Rise And Fall, Midnight Souls, and Rot In Hell take note. After two self-released EPs and a self-released split-CD with Unveil, Switzerland’s DEADVERSE finally recorded eleven passionate and emotive songs for the band’s debut album. “Caution To The Wind” could be best described as a mix of Midwestern emo, Revolution Summer hardcore à la Gray Matter or Rites of Spring, Dackelblut, and even some Engine Down thrown in. Good. Deadverse was a band that came out of nowhere for me with vocals somewhat reminiscent of At The Drive-In. Fans of Sinaloa, Baton Rouge, and Coerce take note. Great stuff. Enjoy!

Split - Kong & Shield Your Eyes & That Fucking Tank & Castrovalva 10'' (2011)

Country:UK
Genre: Noise Rock, Math Rock.
Label: Brew Records

Tracks: 4 + Bonus Track
Lenght: 20'

Starting with KONG then and we get everything we hoped for. ‘Ribbons’ is a demoralising stomp through molasses-consistency faeces. With an emphasis on the ‘call and response’ of groups of three stabs, this is as relentless as it can be until it reaches its almost pleasing peak and finishes writhing on the floor with an occasional re-entry from a dying guitar or an attempt from an unsatisfied drummer to pick up that lost drive. But alas, it’s over and we are thrown out of the door by lead singer Magpie telling us in his constricted tones that "I was the king".

Quite a different approach is taken by Shield Your Eyes in ‘Jessica’. With shedloads more melody than their arrogant forebears, these guys have even chosen real subject matter for their lyrics! Starting with a mildly dissonant riff followed by a rough vocal that clearly outlines what appears to be a ‘hook’, the listener can easily be lulled into a false sense of security. However, get halfway in and you’ll be roused from that state by a ten second mess of painful strikes followed by an instrumental in which every instrument takes the centre of its own psychotic stage. This continues through to the punctual return of the central riff and a frenetic outro to please those of us who haven’t already lost our minds.

By far the most conventional track on the album, That Fucking Tank’s ‘NWONWOBH’ is a durge’n’roll trudge through swamp-like riffs. Masters of evolving their ideas, That Fucking Tank expand and regurgitate their riffs with all the care of a mother bird. The central riff is made up from galloping rhythm and chordal double-stops in equal parts (sounding not unlike some classic Iron Maiden parts), triplets bounce off the walls throughout the song and some of the swung parts could easily see Jack White standing behind the fretboard.

Castrovalva’s latest offering is as wacky as ever. Egotistical but not indulgent, deadly serious but childishly playful, ‘In Our Prime’ is a beautiful slice of Valva and works all the hallmarks that the band have honed. With lines like "everyone loves that Valva sound" and "remember the rules yeah – don’t be a pussy", Castrovalva hit that space between Tenacious D and Enter Shikari with such clownster panache that it would be hard not to love them.

The idea of doing split ten inch records is a nice one and is perfect for providing fans with essential between-album material. However, once you look past its values as a collector’s curiosity and an outsider’s introduction, this is only four tracks long and has no consistent themes. This is four brilliant tracks by four brilliant bands but perhaps a more cohesive aesthetic could be adopted for Brew’s next outing. -Bearded Magazine

Coerce - Silver Tongued Life Licker LP (2009)

Country: Australia
Genre: Posthardcore
Label: Capital Games
Tracks: 11

Coerce are a band that have seemingly popped up out of nowhere and thanks to a national support tour with Perth rockers Karnivool and a spot on this years Big Day Out their name is being mentioned quite a bit. The band members themselves have an impressive past resume including Realist Few, Soft White Machine and Mere Theory and not surprisingly elements from all of the aforementioned groups can be found hiding in amongst the sounds of ‘Silver Tongued Life Licker’. The record, and I mean that literally as the album was originally only released on vinyl, presents a style best described as indie infused post-punk similar to the likes of Bear vs. Shark and At The Drive In. The first track Trance, Viper, Dance opens with a thumping drum groove mixed with shimmering guitars before changing pace to an overdriven punk jam complete with gang vocal breakdowns and screams. The title track follows and shifts the record to a heavier place, reminiscent of tour buddies Karnivool, before third track Extortion Turned Publicity, in which vocalist Michael Deslandes shows you what Peter Garret might have sounded like if he screamed more. The highlight of the album comes a little later on with Yellow Bellied Blind Snake with its melody heavy chorus that is caught between some fuzzy punk rock and a Mars Volta like ending. Things mellow out with The Kitchen and then end with one of the longest and heaviest tracks A Sordid Past: This Hex Will Last. The album was recorded by the band themselves at Capital Sound Studios and the quality is quite impressive, for me the vocals let the record down at times as they do not seem to match the efforts of the music. Overall, this is a great album and worth your attention. Enjoy!

Into It.Over It - Proper LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Indie rock, emo
Label: No Sleep Records
Tracks: 12

There's something to be said about cohesiveness in music, most especially in this day and age where the art form of an album that provides the listener with an experience from start to finish is more and more becoming an antiquated concept. Evan Thomas Weiss (aka Into It. Over It.) however, who at 26 years and with his debut full length album "Proper," has attained a level of depth in his songwriting not seen by most artists throughout their entire careers. Having written, recorded and played with an eclectic pedigree of artists such as Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, The Progress, and Stay Ahead of the Weather, IIOI's culmination of experiences with said bands have stylistically fused together for the grand effort that is Weiss’ debut LP. The album's release will mark a four year commemoration of his 52 Weeks project (where from September 2007 to September 2008 he wrote and recorded one track each week for a year, making them available online before being approached by No Sleep Records who released them as a 2xCD in June of 2009), as well as his Twelve Towns 7" series/collection which featured recordings with artists such as Bob Nanna (Braid / Hey Mercedes), CSTVT, Everyone Everywhere, Pswingset, Empire! Empire!, and Such Gold, recently compiled for release on Topshelf Records. The new album also follows Weiss’ 2010 split release with friend Andrew “KOJI” Shiraki, named one of the year’s best overlooked releases by The Associated Press. The lyrical concepts of "Proper" and it's all around aura stems from autobiographical and literal exemplifications which have taken place over the past year of Weiss' life, most of which occurring in Chicago where he now resides. The album culminates in a heady yet straightforward melodic stew resembling Sunny Day Real Estate, Death Cab For Cutie and Dismemberment Plan to name a few, along with impassioned songwriting executed with the potency and ardor of Chuck Regan and Colin Meloy . While not labeled as a concept album per se, the stories which form the basis of Into It. Over It.'s songs stem from Weiss' own personal experiences, but are still relatable by one theme and one theme only: Life. "Proper" was recorded at Blacklodge Studios in Eudora, KS and co-produced by Ed Rose. The album features contributions from Nick Wakim of Stay Ahead of the Weather/CSTVT on drums and Nathan Ellis of The Casket Lottery. Proper is Into It. Over It's debut full length. Great album. Enjoy!

The Fucking Wrath - Valley Of The Serpent's Soul LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Metal, Hardcore, punk, stoner rock
Label: Tee Pee Records
Tracks: 8

The Fucking Wrath bring a sound that's an amalgamation of groups such as Discharge, Black Flag, The Melvins and "Kill Em All"-era Metallica. The Fucking Wrath was conceived in Montalvo, California by three long-time friends who worked in the same record store and lived on the same street. While the members had each been playing in dedicated bands for more than ten years, they initially formed T.F.W. as a result of jamming for fun after work. Since their first gig in November of 2005, they have gone on to play a continual string of shows that hasen't stopped yet. The band recorded their first album, "Season Of Evil", during the week of 6/06/06. In true DIY fashion the band paid for the recording themselves. After numerous shows playing with a ride range of bands from Tragedy to Blue Cheer & High On Fire to the Adolescents their mix of punk/stoner metal/rock n roll caught the attention of Goodfellow & Challenge The Throne Records who released "Seasons..." on CD & LP respectivly in August of 2007. With rave reviews from print and online zines, the group embarked on two nation-wide tours and several west coast ventures. The Fucking Wrath now averages close to 150 shows per year with no sign of slowing down. They have a track included on the Nardcore Compilation: 30 Years Later LP on Burning Tree Records. In 2009, Brent Woodward joined the group, adding a second guitar to the mix. Fueled by significant doses of THC, their songs are simultaneously heavy and fast, while cleverly infused with slower, droned-down riffs and sudden timing changes. The band's sound can be described as an amalgamation of groups such as Discharge, Black Flag, The Melvins and Kill 'em All-era Metallica. The Fucking Wrath consists of Craig Kasamis: guitar/guttural onslaught, Nick Minasian: bass/visceral ravaging, Brent Woodward: guitar/looking good, and John Crerar: really heavy drums.

Their MySpace is entitled "paltorture" ... then necessarily, it's a little worried. Because the underground black death of hell, it's going five minutes. Good at the same time, it M_ (yes that's more like hype) eh, so it was perhaps irony and it is much easier to understand. Otherwise, Pal we knew, before receiving it, nor Eve nor Adam is originally from Toulouse and delivers music to the image of the artwork of her and out your mouth. Sludge or a mixture of punk and metal noisecore playing snipers on Prototype Records label, specializes in Southern prods structure 'that tear the mouth much as it should (see: Bone Dance, Dear Catastrophe, Snakecharmer, Sofy Major, Stuntman) . And Pal, nothing wrong, why it is served.

In eight hits and some thirty minutes of hype systematically conducted, Pal is about the powder and so damn hangover. An appetizer with a "Far beyond couscous" as a hors d'oeuvre and already, it crushes the riff happily along it's hormones pulsate. In addition it plays very quickly and it plays on the edge of despair and ultimately, it takes so almost everything in its path ("Mudslide"). As for the "song", it is constantly on the edge of the break that never comes ... but the atmosphere tends to chalk and puts the listener in a state of tension pregnant, what the trick nicely muscle after a few minutes of listening. Intense two titles, so here is it's time to take a break with an interlude ("Cursed") seems to be there to prevent overheating before "Bee war" not just blow everything up. There, it will actually be war.

Pal supports where it hurts and accelerates the pace, sending now the titles most abrasive and gusts as with these guys, there are only that, you definitely takes for her number. Urban Guerilla vs. trench warfare, we are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get to the turbine. Fashion DIYcore what ... Between hardcore subversive, punk and noise to the savagery kärcher, And out your mouth is one of those albums that arrive without warning, by the grace of a benevolent label (there are still so ...) for us to head upside down ("Tank", "Dumbledarkthrone") and the vertebrae in the puzzle. Especially since in this group there, when there are more, yaa it again and from there, it sends HxC groovy across the room, plastered with a sacred noisecore to close the gaps, or expand , it depends, and especially a huge desire to discover. Enjoyable, like the "Gazallelluia" final (yes, they dared). The type of discovery was not expected at all (at the same time, it's a bit like the principle) and that makes us want to return fissa. Replay. -W-Fenec (another fucking google translation, sorry.)

Seriously, LVL Up has a really cool 90's vibe that I wish more bands embraced. Amazing album! Another highly recommended! Enjoy! I also included LVL Up's Singles Cassette for you to check out as well.

La Dispute-Wildlife LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Posthardcore, indie rock
Label: No Sleep Records
Tracks: 14

La Dispute is five close friends from Grand Rapids, Michigan with a firm passion for the concept of music and art as a medium for making new friends. As a result, La Dispute makes (or strives to make) music that is both artistically, technically, and emotionally engaging in hopes of establishing legitimate connections with any and all interested people, while encouraging dialogue between those people and themselves about things in life that truly matter and that truly last. La Dispute also carries a firm passion for the relevance of a live show, both for the bands involved and for the people in attendance, and will go to the grave believing that the environment created when strangers come together despite their differences to celebrate one important thing is invaluable and should not under any circumstances be taken for granted. Two split 7" to come in 2010 (with two amazing friends), and a European tour in June. Wildlife picks up where La Dispute left off with 2008's Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River Between Vega And Altair. This is another highly anticipated release for me and Wildlife has exceeded every expectation. Wildlife is set to be released October 3rd on No Sleep Records. Wildlife is sure to make many year end lists as one of the best posthardcore/indie rock albums of the year. Check it out and judge for yourself. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

Amebix._.sonic mass(2011)

Year: 2011
Country: Uk
Label: Profaneexistence
Tracks: 10
Genre: Crust

AMEBIX, one of the best-loved and most influential bands in heavy music, have spent the last two years working towards this, a defining moment in their storied career – the release of their first collection of all-new material since 1987.On September 20, 2011, upon the cusp of the autumnal Equinox, the new AMEBIX album will be released. EntitledSonic Mass, these nine songs represent the past, present, and future of the band, and will enthrall and inspire longtime fans and new converts alike. As dark, crushing, and honest as anything on their classics Arise! and Monolith, but imbued with a lifetime of hardship, raw emotion, and eternal hope, Sonic Mass is the album AMEBIX have always wanted to create. The album was recorded at Rock Cottage in Derbyshire and The Lodge Studiosin Northampton, England, and engineered, mixed and produced by AMEBIXdrummer Roy Mayorga. Sonic Mass will be released digitally and on CD by the band's own Amebix Records (distributed world-wide through Cargo) along with a deluxe 12” vinyl edition.Formed in the late seventies and hailed as the godfathers of crust punk and extreme metal, AMEBIX had long lain dormant until the addition of drummer Roy Mayorga (Nausea, Crisis, Soulfly, Stone Sour), a DVD release, and a string of 2009 reunion shows reignited the flame. The band’s resurrection first resulted in the release of 2010’s Redux EP, which features live and rerecorded versions of several of the band's best-loved classics, including "Winter," "Chain Reaction," and the immortal battle cry, "Arise." The songs were remixed by Mayorga andRedux is available from Profane Existence on CD, 12" LP and digitally. Now, the time has come to finish what they started. A whole new chapter in the AMEBIXsaga has begun.

Local Band Spotlight: Brass Caskets and Cold Snap

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Labels: Redscroll Records, Get Young Records, Self Released
Tracks: Cold Snap: 8/Brass Caskets:4

I was recently contacted by Josh Carlson, owner of Redscroll records who asked me to post a review of his latest release, which got me to thinking of a new direction to take my contributions to this blog. I started thinking that maybe I can start doing regional posts since the music we cover on Elementary Revolt literally spans the globe and is not limited in scope, style, sound, etc. The only requirement is that the music must be independent on some level and have no ties with major record companies. Feel free to contact me and give me feedback about the idea. So, here's my first regional post. The first two bands to make the spotlight are two Connecticut bands from the United States. The first band is Wallingford based Brass Caskets who released their first proper release, a split with CT's Cold Snap. Brass Caskets play a tense and noise rock influenced style of posthardcore that has elements of grunge and noise rock. Upon hearing Brass Casket's side of the 7", I hear influences ranging from Breather Resist, At The Drive-In, and Refused combined with the backbone of American Hardcore bands such as The Hope Conspiracy and American Nightmare (Give Up The Ghost). The second band on the split 7" is Cold Snap. Cold Snap play a like minded style of music, but have more of an atmospheric vibe coupled with an ugly noiserock undercurrent that brings to mind bands such as Ink & Dagger or The Rise combined with noise rock bands such as Engineer or The Minor Times. This is an amazing 7" and you'd be missing out if you didn't get a copy. Josh didn't send mp3s of the 7", but songs from the split 7" can be streamed here:cold snap - Bandcamp . Maybe Josh will be cool and send mp3's if there's enough positive feedback, so start posting comments and hit up the shoutbox as well. I included Brass Casket's Demo, Cold Snap's demo, and Cold Snap's Godspeed 7" for you to check out as well. Overall, the split 7" is incredible and worth picking up. So buy some vinyl dammit!!!

Dead In The Dirt - Fear EP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, punk
Label: Southern Lord
Tracks: 10

I was absolutely stoked to see this EP hit the web. Atlanta, GA's Dead In The Dirt have absolutely nailed it with their latest EP. Dead In The Dirt's fury, hate, rage, and venom has been fully captured in true form on their latest EP and debut recording for Southern Lord records. If you remember my previous post, Dead In The Dirt are truly a force to be reckoned with live and delivered an amazing performance when I was lucky enough to catch the band play live at Redscroll records in Wallingford, CT on 9/19/11 during the band's first successful show in the area. The great thing about Dead In The Dirt is the positive message the band conveighs, which is done with integrity, honesty, and without being overly preachy or arrogant sounding. Dead In The Dirt embrace veganism, vegetarianism, and support the straight edge lifestyle. I'm not straight edge, but am vegetarian and after being involved in the "scene" since the mid-nineties, I've come to truly appreciate any band that can still have a message without trying to cram their beliefs down your throat. The music on Fear is brutal as f**k and show you that the band can obliterate anything in their path. Fear is comprised of ten songs in total with a kick-ass cover of Left For Dead's Skin Graft (one of my all time favorite hardcore songs of all time). Highly recommended! Enjoy! On a side note Fear is limited to 1500 copies, so you better act quick before the EP is sold out.

Stereozor - Demo (2011)

Country: France
Genre: Post Hardcore, Noise Rock, Stoner
Label: DIY

Tracks: 4
Lenght: 12'

The alloy + heavy melodies, on paper, is always attractive. Many groups sees it, many people end up nose in the slurry. Usually because of a song too stupid and / or game at a discount. Stereozor, new group of Limoges pointing the tip of the snout with the first demo-cons is the perfect example. Not only do these three dudes, one and two former Heatseeker Bushmen, have found the ideal balance between a rhythm section that plays a song and stop singing for good, but they also use it to compose beautifully real songs . Structured fairly standard, but devilishly effective, with long chorus that is between the ears and riffs that make them feel very human. Stereozor may pass for an old dinosaur, so his music is connoted 90 years, but everything is balanced with such conviction that look in the mirror, under these conditions, is frankly not a problem. During these four titles, while the inevitable big evil will take the time to have fun to play (easy) Match Game (the first is the song Waving Skull Defekt Melvins played back in fashion (unless it be the Foo Fighters?), the second of a Monster Magnet in him, the third revolves around a plan that is very guitar Drive Blind last period, strongly influenced by Jawbox, therefore, the fourth is the unlikely meeting between Killing Joke and Quicksand (for the reverb on the vocals)), Stereozor take the opportunity to impose its trademark. Battery, all in toms, is quite fantastic from beginning to end, the bass lines are the rehearsals that lead to higher transcendental (they admit this influence in the bio, I repeat: the Stereozor has eaten the Skull defekt!), and the guitar riffs appropriately wedged between a fat stoner and phrasing totally rock'n'roll, shear perfection. The singing is top, staff, great location, on the front without having to do too much.

This CD is a small demo designed to test the waters, but the 4 songs in it it contains more ideas and plans catchy as all the albums I've received in recent months. This is what is called deflowering a success. -NextCludes (translate by fucking google translator)

Reivers-Schemata 7" (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, punk, metal, thrash
Label: Vitriol Records
Tracks: 5

Hell yes! I am psyched to see this 7" finally seeing the light. After a kick-ass demo, Vitriol records have released the debut 7" by Oakland, CA's Reivers. Reivers features ex-members of Acts Of Sedition as well as current members of Negative Standards and Graf Orlack. Reivers play a highly corrosive and volatile style of music that incorporates elements of hardcore, punk, metal, and thrash into a seething, paint peeling and mind-blowing 5 track offering. One of the main things that really set Reivers apart from the pack is the female fronted vocalist. The singer's vocals remind me of Conversions at times, which is definitely a much needed change of pace because the majority of hardcore bands have male vocalists. I haven't been this impressed by a band since since Glasses and Oathbreaker. Do yourself a favor and order a copy from Vitriol. The packaging on the 7" is amazing and features stamped records and an great offset cardboard cover. Great album. Highly recommended! I also included Reiver's 2010 demo for you to check out as well.

Damages-Unrequited 7" (2010)/Damages/Book Of Caverns Split 7" (2010)

Country: Canada
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: React! Records
Tracks: 4

Damages are a Vancouver, BC based band featuring former members of Keep It Clear, Circles, All Through A Life, and Deadsure. In my opinion, Damages are one of the best and most overlooked bands in the Canadian music scene. Damages take cues from early 90's Ebullition hardcore bands as well as the sound made popular by early AmRep style bands. The great thing about Damages is the immediacy and urgency the band conveys with their sound and lyrics. Damages sound can be compared to a more up to date version of 400 Years combined with the technical proficiency of bands like Shotmaker or Unsane. The two songs on Unrequited make for one of my favorite 7"s released in 2010. The second seven inch I posted is the band's split with Edmonton, BC's Book Of Caverns, also released in 2010. On this 7" each band provides one song each. On their side of the 7", Damages continue with another song of their trademark emotive sounding hardcore in a vein similar to their Unrequited 7". Book Of Caverns, who just appeared on a killer 4 way split Lp with Lizards Have Personalities, iSilencio, Ahora, Silencio!, and Todos Caeran provide one song of their trademark posthardcore with postrock leanings that makes me think of Pianos Become The Teeth mixed with Envy. I can't begin to describe how good these two 7" are. Keep your eyes peeled for Damages debut full length LP entitled Indignation, which is soon to be released on React! records.

Big Sexy Noise - Big Sexy Noise (2009)

Country: USA
Genre: Noise Rock, New Wave, Jazz, Psychedelic.
Label: Alone Records, Sartorial Records

Tracks: 12
Lenght: 45'

Big Sexy Noise follow up their vinyl mini album, released in summer of 2009, with a full blown CD album. The band, fronted by Lydia Lunch and Gallon Drunk alt-rockers James Johnston, Terry Edwards and Ian White, have recorded a further five Johnston/Lunch originals plus a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover to complement the original six tracks. Big Sexy Noise is the primaeval bump, grind and holler of White’s thuggish drums, Johnston’s moronic low-tuned riffing and Edwards’ brutal organ and sax interventions led by Lunch’s take-no-prisoners vocals. The album opens with The Gospel Singer which Lunch wrote with Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), followed by Lou Reed’s Kill Your Sons before settling into the trademark songs by Big Sexy Noise protagonists Johnston and Lunch.

Pile-Big Web 7"(2011)/Magic Isn't Real LP (2010)/Jerk Routine LP(2009)

Country: USA
Genre: Indie rock, posthardcore, punk, noise rock
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 23

Pile are a Boston based band that plays a great style of music influenced by early to mid-nineties indie rock. Big Web is the band's latest 7" and shows Pile drawing on early Doghouse records bands and early Deep Elm style indie and emo. I hear influences ranging from Chavez, Kerosene 454, and Chamberlain (Split Lip) to Bluetip on the band's latest 7". Pile have also released two other albums as well. Pile released Magic Isn't Real in 2010 and Jerk Routine in 2009. On these earlier releases I hear early Jade Tree styled posthardcore and was reminded of the bands Walleye and Railhed who played great rock n' roll influenced posthadcore and had releases on Jade Tree in the early 1990's. Rounding out the Pile's sound is a DC influence that made me think of Swiz, Sweetbelly Freakdown, and Omaha. Big Web, Magic Isn't Real, and Jerk Routine are three great albums and are well worth your attendtion. Props to BOAWS for schooling me on the fact there are still great bands out there playing this style of music. all of the band's recorded material is available as pay what you want on their bandcamp page. Great Stuff! Enjoy!

Praise-2 Songs 7"(2011)/Growing. Changing. Healing EP(2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: React! Records
Tracks: 6

Praise is a Baltimore, Maryland based straightedge band who play a great style of hardcore/punk that mixes the sounds of 80's hardcore bands such as Turning Point, Verbal Assault, and Battery with heavier and more modern hardcore such as Verse and Have Heart. On the band's latest 7" entitled Two Songs, the band adds an element of early 80's DC hardcore played bands such as Rites Of Spring or Dag Nasty. I really like the Two Songs 7" which shows Praise taking more of a rock oriented DC approach and shows the band following in labelmates Give's footsteps, who also play a groove oriented style of DC style hardcore. Great EP's Enjoy!
