Yaw - Australia EP (2011)

Country: Spain
Genre: Rocking Hardcore, Emotive Metal
Label: DIY

Tracks: 5
Lenght: 11'

Yaw is a great band from Donostia (Basque Country, Spain). They released their first LP two years ago and now they have just released an EP entitled Australia with 5 new tracks that sound more like their hardcore vein, leaving metal riffs a little bit aside. It is a more intense, sensible and furious work, with the whole vocals yelled and leaving melodies in charge of the instrumental section. The lyrics (everything in basque) are essential and you guys have to check them out for sure. The whole EP is available for free download via bandcamp.

Genre: Posthardcore, Emo
Label: Music Hole, Devilchild,

Tracks: 12
Lenght: 43'

5000 rpm present "Manifesto" 3 years after their debut album; [Héroe] de unxs..[Tirano] de otrxs, an album carefully to the millimeter, which is a new twist to the sound of the locals. From its roots melodic and aggressive, and without losing its essence, but reinventing, we are reeling over 12 tracks, musical and lyrical manifesto, letters on this disc is of vital importance to understand as a whole. Simplicity and complexity, darkness and melody, and emotion density given by the hand, and flow naturally throughout the entire album. More personal than ever, more melodic and more convoluted than ever, 5000 rpm have managed to find and create their own sound, full of nuances, which blends perfectly the original essence of the band, with new touches progressive, harmonious and environmental accompanied by a very personal vocals and lyrics that cry out for stir consciences. An album that certainly will be talking on the state scene.

Give Up The Ghost - Year One LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore/Punk
Label: Bridge 9 Records
Tracks: 16

Give Up The Ghost has shaped a sound and aesthetic that's identifiable and contextual. The immediate emulation of their sound and image by their peers clearly illustrates the point. The bands founding members, Tim Cossar and Wes Eisold, weren't just fans of hardcore music, they were steeped in its history. Cossar was a member of Ten Yard Fight whom Eisold had served as a roadie for on many national tours. Hardcore would be the framework for their band, the thin lined sketch that they would fill in with colorful lyrics, genre bending song structures and an image new to the genre. Instead of adhering to the tight confines of punk and hardcore, Give Up The Ghost let their diverse musical tastes permeate their songs. Initially you might not see the link to Archers Of Loaf, Joy Division, Pulp, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Morrissey, Fugazi, Lifetime or My Bloody Valentine in GUTG's sound, but its there. Give Up The Ghost redefined and challenged conventional hardcore/punk in a way that makes the band's music sound fresh today. Many modern hardcore bands owe GUTC lots of credit and the band's influence can be seen in modern bands such as Defeater, All Teeth, Run With The Hunted, etc. Year One compiles Give Up The Ghost's first two EP's re-issued as one LP to acknowledge the 10th anniversary of the second EP's release. Great stuff. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

UFO Gestapo - Grandemissair LP [2011]

Country: France
Genre: Sludgecore, Doom
Label: Streaks Records
Tracks: 07

Ufo Gestapos third opus 'Grandemissair' is out and it is again their own outer space and hypnotic brew of Sludge and harcdorish outbursts, just driven to a higher level. A numb and unbearable dwelling within the milkstreet, but then again there is such vehemence, an intoxication of moods is inevitable. As well the vocals have improved to a greater style: here comes some cleaner tone of despair. The screw of weirdness has been driven even deeper, beware the keyboards! Leave this trip cleansed but feeling uncomfortable. Comes in a glossy, neon yellow sleeve plus inlay. Total amount of 538 LPs of which 165 are on clear vinyl.

UFO Gestapo have been constantly delivering the goods over the past few years and this new album is no exception. Sounds to me a lot like what was coming out around the mid-90s underground sludge/punk scene: like Toadliquor, 13, Lice, Spaceboy....actually these guys would've fitted beautifully onto the Enlightenment compilation! This record has got a really unearthly sound to it, their absolute best material yet.

Vestiges & Gaust - Split 12" (2011)

Country: USA/Indonesia
Genre: Posthardcore, Metal, Doom, Crust. Ambient
Label: Mayfly Records, Replenish Records, and Maniyax Records
Tracks: 3

Damn, this is a killer release featuring two of the scene's premier up and comers. The latest 12" featuring Virginia's Vestiges and Indonesia's Ghaust can best be described in two words heavy and intense. On side one, Vestiges offer up one song that mixes doom, hardcore, ambient, and metal with flawless precision. On the B- side, Ghaust plays a style of crushing and beautiful ambient metal. I was really impressed by Gaust's technical take on ambient metal that includes interesting song structures. I don't even miss the vocals on their side of the 12" A must listen for fans of Thou, Black Freighter, DFHVN, and Seraphim. Great stuff!

Ruptures - Dead Bloom EP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Posthardcore, Punk
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 3

Ruptures are a four piece band from Los Angeles, CA who play a style of music that's really hard to pin down. At times I hear post hardcore in the vein of bands like early Blood Brothers, Refused, The Rise, or Since By Man. At other times the band's sound reminds me of something that would have been put out on Level Plane records in the early 2000's (think Hot Cross or The Now). Ruptures also includes some flourishes of modern hardcore in a similar style of bands like Touche Amore. The three songs on Dead Bloom continue where the band left off with their Adormidera LP , making for an urgent, dark, and at times claustrophobic listen. Great stuff. Enjoy! I also included links for Adormidera and Ruptures' Milkbled EP in case you missed those releases the first time around.

Ancient Lights - Demo (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Post Rock, Metal, Post Hardcore, Instrumental
Label: DIY

Tracks: 3
Lenght: 11'

We're a two piece, some times three, instrumental band from Ebensburg, Pa. We like long drives, walks on the beach, and Micheal Bolton.

The name Ancient Lights was an idea that was derived from the terms Old Lights and New Lights which were used in Christian circles to distinguish between two groups who were initially the same, but have come to a disagreement. These terms have been applied in a wide variety of ways, and the meaning must be determined from context. Typically, if a denomination is changing, and some refuse to change, and the denomination splits, those who did not change are referred to as the "Old Lights", and the ones who changed are referred to as the "New Lights".

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore
Label: Six Feet Under
Tracks: 5

Brand new from one of the most polarizing bands in hardcore right now, Philadelphia's AGITATOR are back with their second 7" WALLS CLOSING IN. They first came to our attention when SFU talent scout Bob Wilson said "yo put this band out", but Bob has terrible taste in bands usually, so it took until last years "Enter The Vicelords" on Harvcore Records and their wild set at TIH for SFU to really take notice. 5 tracks of brutal heavy straight edge hardcore featuring guest vocals on the title track by the world famous Joe Hardcore, and by world infamous Justin Ogden on "Force Fed Lies". Great music. Fans of 90's hardcore made popular by bands such as Chokehold, Infest, 108, and The Hope Conspiracy as well as newer bands such as Naysayer and Nails take note. I also included the band's Enter Vice Lords 7" released in 2010 for you to check out as well. Enjoy!

Regents - S/T 7" (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Screamo
Label: Lovitt Records
Tracks: 4

Regents, whose members hail from a 200 mile stretch of I-95, are veterans of some of the most influential hardcore bands of the 90’s including Maximillian Colby, Sleepytime Trio, Frodus, The Exploder, Men’s Recovery Project, Battery, and Combat Wounded Veteran. Band mates David NeSmith, Drew Ringo, Dan Evans and Jason Hamacher have come together to form a brutal and heavily charged punk band. Regents formed in the summer of 2007 when NeSmith and Hamacher were playing as a keytar & drum duo called Regions. The following year Ringo and Evans moved back to the east coast and both separately approached David about playing music. NeSmith called a meeting and the three quickly realized their mutual goals. A call to Hamacher turned Regions from a duo into a quartet. A misunderstanding on Ringo’s part changed the band name from Regions to Regents and the rest is history. Drawing inspiration from years playing in basements, squats, and living rooms, Regents crafted four songs of pure ferocity laden with heavy hitting drums, distorted ringing guitars and blood curdling screams. Recorded by Joseph Mitra at Wired Wrists, the four songs will be released as a 7 inch record from Lovitt Records. Presented here are the forces of Frodus, Sleepytime Trio, and The Exploder, combined and shaken, delivering a faster, more direct, and purer sonic cocktail that than any of their previous offerings. Damn, this will definitely end up being one of my favorite 7"s for 2011. Seriously, I can't begin to describe how good this 7" is. Fans of any of the bands listed above, 90's emotive hardcore, or Science Of Yabra take note. Highly recommended! I'm glad to see that Lovitt has awoken from it's slumber and deliver the goods with these two 7"s.

Today, they are poised to release their first 7" (recorded at Greg Norman's studio) and have earned unexpected admirers from top tastemakers like Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow (who did the art for the record) and Califone’s Tim Rutili (plays 2nd Guitar on one of the songs) among others. Kidcrash features a dynamic, quiet/loud approach to their sound and incorporates a DC post-hardcore element within their song structures. Kidcrash's sound can loosely be compared to bands such as Raein, City of Caterpillar, Life at These Speeds, and Pg. 99. The more I listen to this 12" the more I fall in love with these songs. Brain F≠ - Sleep Rough LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Garage Rock, Punk
Label: Sorry State, Grave Mistake

Tracks: 10
Lenght: 25'

The first two singles from North Carolina's Brain F≠ left a lot of people scratching their heads: Is it garage? Is it hardcore? (It's definitely punk.) How did they write such catchy riffs? How do you pronounce "F≠?" Brain F≠'s debut long player, Sleep Rough, will force you to ponder those same questions and may breed even more (and we mean that in the best way possible). Everything has been amped up for this release... the hard stuff is harder, the catchy stuff is catchier (oh, is it catchy!), and the weird stuff is weirder. There's no need for band comparisons, but if you're into that sort of thing then imagine the SAINTS' minds in TEENGENERATE and the AVENGERS' bodies sent to a dystopian future. Really, though, this sounds like the year 2011; if you like huge guitars, endless vocal hooks, and a turbo-charged rhythm section (you do), then you need to hear this record.

H2O._.the new york city (2011)

Country: Usa
Genre: Hardcore
Year: 2011
Label: Bridge9
Tracks: 3

H2O is a band that had beginnings like any other band. No one could have guessed that a few guys and a former roadie from New York would start a band as a one-song side project and it would turn into a world-touring powerhouse. They took humble roots and worked their way to add their chapter to the long history of New York Hardcore and they would define the term “melodic hardcore” that would become so common years later. From 1996 to 2003 was unavoidable- four albums on Blackout!, Epitaph, and MCA records with over 300,000 copies sold, constant world touring with the likes of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Rancid, AFI, Pennywise, & the Used, Sick Of It All, the Misfits, 7 Seconds, and Madball, as well as runs on the Warped Tour-they established themselves as a household name and inspired countless others in their wake. In the pre-internet world of hardcore and punk, H2O was the band that blended the heavily-tattooed, unbridled rage of New York bands like the Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front, with the punk melodies of bands like the Descendents and Token Entry. It’s hard to argue that bands a decade later would take the melodic hardcore groundwork laid by H2O to wider audiences. It's now 2008 and H20 is still here, but Nothing To Prove is not a comeback – that’s way too simple. Nothing to Prove is a statement of everything the band is and a taste of what the band will be in the future - and it’s nothing short of incredible. Frontman Toby Morse said it best, “This time feels urgent. I feel everything on this album has been building up over the last seven years. That’s why this album is called Nothing To Prove - because it’s all out on the table.” This is H2O’s most personal, most angry, most positive, hardest, yet catchiest album to date, and it comes into a scene not unlike the scene that H2O originally entered. Hardcore and punk as concepts have been diluted, confused and hyphenated to the point where it’s a marketing term. Nothing To Prove is a ten-song breath of fresh air and honesty that is poised to revive an otherwise stagnant “scene”. The re-emergence of H2O hits with the first notes of the opening track, “1995.” Only a few solitary chords before the crashing of a fast, raw and melodic song, complete with classic sing-alongs and a perfect breakdown. The title track is next and while it’s only a minute and a half blast, “Nothing To Prove” sums up H2O’s manifesto for this release: the band is back and while their history speaks for itself, they’re not resting on any laurels. Featuring Agnostic Front’s Roger Miret and the one and only Danny Diablo, the band shows they haven’t forgotten where they came from. As the album progresses, H2O reminds the listener that their penchant for infectious anthems and choruses has not dissipated one bit. Lyrically, we see Toby Morse as up front and honest as he’s ever been. Anthems about being straight edge in his 30’s (“Still Here”), to being a responsible adult with tattoos (“Heart On My Sleeve”), and the personal sacrifices and vulnerabilities we all feel (“Unconditional”) are all present on Nothing to Prove. With “Sunday,” listeners get a stunning display of Morse’s personal story - the passing of his father when he and his brother, H2O guitarist, Todd Morse, were young children, and the subsequent birth of his own child on the same day of the week. Toby bares it all in one of the most personal songs H20 has written. Ending with the anthem, and first single, “What Happened?” we are presented with a testament to the power of H2O. The song is an anthem about questioning the ethics and motives of bands and music in general today, but the subject is addressed in a positive way. They take an infectious anthem and up the ante with appearances by Lou Koller of Sick Of It All and Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio both showing what they do best. It’s a formidable closer and it’s the last statement in an album that is the most forthright in their career thus far; their hearts are on their sleeves. Bassist Adam Blake commented, “This is the first time I’ve ever seen Toby NEEDING to write lyrics. He just kept writing and writing and writing and it came so easy to him once he got started.” What makes Nothing To Prove such a monumental album is that it is a collaboration of many long-time H2O fans, only now, instead of stage-diving and singing along, they’re behind the boards of the recording studio, designing the artwork and releasing the albums. Produced by longtime fan and friend of the band, Chad Gilbert (New Found Glory), a new perspective was brought in. Toby said, “Chad really knew how to help us take good songs and make them sound great.” Gilbert stated, “I am a fan of H2O and this is an album that fans of H2O want to hear. They needed to make this record and I’m really proud to be a part of it.” Bridge Nine Records’ owner Chris Wrenn and label manager Karl Hensel both have their own histories with H2O running over a decade as well. “This entire project has been amazing,” Wrenn stated. “Everyone involved is passionate about the album and it’s been a great experience watching this album get created start to finish and to see the band’s reaction and excitement about the finished product. They’ve never had this kind of control or say in every last aspect of the process. It’s an honor that H2O is a part of our legacy and it’s an honor that Bridge Nine is apart of H2O’s legacy.” H2O, much like you’d expect, is hitting every corner of the globe spreading the word that H2O is undeniably back.

Michel Cloup - Notre Silence (2011)

Country: France
Genre: Indie Rock, Spoken World
Label: DIY

Tracks: 8
Lenght: 43'

While the announcement of the reformation scenic Diabologum thrilled an entire segment of a generation and that orphan scum festivals with Binary Audio Misfits is only one Cloup Michel decides to break his silence with ... Notre Silence. By choosing to take their marital status as a stage name, Michel Cloup decided to lay bare and showing he still has good things to say while remaining true to his ethics. The one who played a few years ago with a history of Seductión Diabologum, today won his sobriety in the image of the artwork reminiscent of the label BYG News. Notre Silence is an album where the intimate introspective rubs the blueprint and electricity frappemartiale the baritone. Michel Cloup is the inventory of a man of his time and is released as he has never done before in radio not long beaches. He lowers the mask but the anger is still there (Cette Colère). He observes life with its unique look and talk to his phrasing that is not less. Mon Histoire is a bit ours too. The lack of communication, sometimes found the lost childhood, separation ... Notre Silence shakes, as was able to do it exits Dominique A. Si Le Cercle Parfait is not a title, one would be tempted to say that those two words would describe quite well the content and form of this essential album.

Le Scimmie - Dromomania (2011)

Country: Italy
Genre: Stoner, Sludge, Doom, Instrumental
Label: DIY

Tracks: 10
Lenght: 23'

The comparison is quickly made when you find out that Italian duo Le Scimmie have in fact the same name as the Prefab Four from the sixties. But all similarities end with the name, or it has to be that the guys from Le Scimmie like to monkey around as well. If there must be a comparison (and yes: there must be one of course), Le Scimmie is like the White Stripes in the desert with Jack White pretending to be Josh Homme (without singing). The ramshackly pots and pans as drums combined with fuzz guitar never make you miss the failing bass and vocals. Like the White Stripes proved: less can be more.

The debut album ‘Dromomania’ was recorded in only four days and it can be heard. Not in a sense that it sounds bad. It is just plain obvious that there was more in it. ‘Dromomania’ is short, just 23 minutes which makes it too short for a real album. If you leave out the filler bits there is even less. But in those twenty or so minutes Le Scimmie has a lot of good things in store. The title track, ‘Frustrazione Della Psiche’ and ‘Frekete’ are all built around strong, forceful riffs in which the buzzing down-tuned guitar with lots of distortion pulls our attention. At the same time there are many moments that make you think the songs were not finished yet, or too many ideas were put in one song. Given the short length of the album Le Scimmie could have made separate songs for all these ideas.

It remains unclear what drives the band as almost all information is in Italian. My lacking knowledge of the language barely lets me conclude this is a concept album about the human mind and what can go wrong in it. The main influence is listed as “vita frustrata”. I can understand that. What the songs are about is a complete mystery, as is usual the case with instrumental tracks. With a bit of help from the dictionary I find out what words as “dromomania”, “athazagorafobia”, “nostofobia” mean and I can only think it must be very depressing to live near the Adriatic coast.

There are too many loose ends and strange time changes in the songs to make it a really good record. Le Scimmie does have the potential and the talent to show more than it does on ‘Dromomania’. They have convinced me of that. Let’s hear it on the next hopefully really good cd. -Lords of Metal

Romeo must die._.st

Country: Poland
Genre: Crust.
Tracks: 6

"One sided lp by the new band from south of poland, from a small city where a priest, a cop and a politician have the last say. The other side of the vinyl is silkscreened. Romeo Must Die are a mad and pissed off three-piece believing in the ethics of DIY, dumpsterdiving and being the sole animators of their local scene. The group delivers 6 songs (nearly 20 minutes) that are not far from the artimus pyle, his hero is gone or catharsis kinda of style, technically very well played, passionate and downtuned crust with low screaming vocals and lots of tempo variations. Heavy production and poetic lyrics make it one helluva powerful record."

Marionette ID - Alluvion (2011)

Country: Hungary
Genre: Post Rock, Indie, Post-Metal
Label:
Fluttery Records
Tracks: 7
Lenght: 42'

Marionette ID is a Hungarian experimental/post-rock band founded in 2008. After expanding to a greater audience, they played several European tours in 2010 and 2011. The bands appearance on many blogs, music websites made the label curious about the band and they have signed a recording agreement with Fluttery Records.

The label started re-issuing their debut self-relase album “Emptiness Will Change Your Mind” in September 2010. The band and album received many good reviews. On a review on Sound As Language, the band received this comment “Subtle melodies are countered by moody instrumental passages and soothing vocals. Marionette ID possess an emotional weight and depth that truly set the band apart. This is post-hardcore at its most melodic and structured. Marionette ID are practicing a precision few bands dare to. If you are willing to give Emptiness Will Change Your Mind some time to grow, you will be richly rewarded.” C.W.Ross said “It hard to pin down the style of music played by the band because it changes depending on what song or even what part of a song you’re listening to at that particular time. You’ll hear everything from Indie and modern rock to post rock, progressive and even jam band elements in the eight songs that make up ‘Emptiness Will Change Your Mind’ and he gave 8.25/10 to the album. Blues Bunny made the comment “An interesting album, therefore, that would have appeal for those who like melody in their rock music or for those who seek to go further than indie rock snack food.”

It was 2011 when Marionette ID started recording their new album. Alluvion was recorded in Budapest from January till June, 2011. In their seven track new album, Marionette ID still try to flirt with interesting structures, heavy sounds using elements of post metal.

Another Kind Of Death - Legacy (2011)

Country: Spain
Genre: Mathcore, Noisecore, Metal, Rock
Label:
DIY
Tracks: 10
Lenght: 31'

Legacy" has been recorded in 2010 at the Sadman Studios in Madrid (Spain) by Carlos Santos –Ictvs, Proud'z, El Ego, Hamlet, Adrift…– and it's been mastered at the Finnvox Studios in Helsinki (Finland) by Mika Jussila –HIM, Nightwish, Children Of Bodom, The 69 Eyes…– Our new record's great production makes it sounds brutal, crude and truly direct. It's undoubtedly the best we've created so far

We formed Another Kind of Death on the year 2000 and we've already published five records with two different labels: the Japanese Red Cobalt Industries –Kylesa, Red Fang, Black Cobra, Saviours…– and Underhill Records –Moksha, Uziel, Moho…– We've been playing live ever since we started the band (that is literally hundreds of times) and we've shared the stage in different shows and major European festivals with bands such as Entombed, Hell is for Heroes, Protest the Hero, Death by Stereo, Mörser, Catharsis, Devil in Me or The Effort among others.

Retarded mathematics for and played by geniuses. Sonic exfoliant for picking at your inner scab. Transplanted to Tejas from somewhere even worse, these guys seem to be shedding some kind of deep-seeded issues through their instruments. I know; i was abducted by them for a week and forced to record them in a barn. I got brutalized. I'm still in therapy... -Billy Anderson

Primitive Weapons - 7inch (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Progressive Metalcore, Noisecore
Label:
Shinebox Recordings
Tracks: 3
Lenght: 12'

Primitive Weapons bonds the American tradition of pointless art with the ecstatic nature of religious ceremony to provide a new aural ritual for the bored. Primitive Weapons is equal parts meditation, freak out, and noise. Primitive weapons reclaims sounds and aesthetics from the rusted shell of counter cultures long destroyed by capitalist futures. Primitive Weapons channels these rebellious ghosts into a primordial sonic boom perfectly suited for the Aeon of Horus. Primitive Weapons is a shadow society whose goal is to overthrow the now defunct American dream. Primitive Weapons is an A-bomb of over saturated capitalist agendas. Primitive Weapons is the bureau of public secrets. Primitive Weapons is already your friend. Yet the questions remain, what is Primitive Weapons? Everything. Who are they? Everyone. What do they want? Whatever is left.

Label:
Ragingplanet
Tracks: 14
Lenght: 33'

ATENTADO is a punk band formed in 1992 in Lisboa, Portugal, (following the demise of the classic punk band ATROFIADOS) by Pedro Do Vale, Cenoura, Roberto and Xico who were founding members of the band ATROFIADOS, after 3 months still under the banner of ATROFIADOS the band changes the name for ATENTADO and about that time nothing really happened, the band went into a 20 years hiatus until the present day, where former bassist Pedro Do Vale and Xico decided to re-activate the band, mainly because of their passion for the music and sheer presistance, that inevitably ended up in PARADOX, the band´s first effort in 20 years! where the band performs re-arranged songs from the ATROFIADOS classic demo, and 9 brand new songs.

Before entering the studio singer Xico decided to quit the band, giving way to Rafael Brazuna.

Now with a revamped line up of Pedro Do Vale, Paulo Lafaia (We Are The Damned), Ricardo Correia (We Are The Damned / Twentyinchburial) JP Fulgencio (Twentyinchburial / For The Glory) and Rafael Brazuna (Subcaos / Etacarinae) this 5 friends hit the studio with Fernando Matias @ The Pentagon in Lisboa, Portugal to track down PARADOX, the band instantly signed with Ragingplanet.

ATENTADO plays an effective, simple and raw form of punk/crust style, with a short mindset of songwritting.
