uSSSy - UD (2011)

Country: Russia
Genre: Math Rock, Avant-garde, Arabic, Noise Rock, Electronic, Experimental, Progressive
Label: DIY
Tracks: 11
Length: 52
'

In the end of 2006, when Moscow-based math-core quartet I AM ABOVE ON THE LEFT decided to cease down joint activity for uncertain period of time, guitarist Artem Galkin locked himself in a studio and with a help from his friends produced a string of highly diverse recordings under the names KRUZR KEN and WEEPING CAMEL. The former project was conceived as a vehicle for exploring territories of live and improvised electro-acoustics, harsh drone, experimental noise, and cinematic music. Soon, Pavel Eremeev, a bass-player and sound-engineer for IAAOTL joined, and the project got shaped as a duo of Galkin and Eremeev handling guitars, hand-made devices, and drums. The next two years saw Artem Galkin and Pavel Eremeev teaming up with Sergei Ledovski, IAAOTL’s drummer, as a furious avant-core trio called USSSY. After finishing work in the recording studio, Ledovski left and Pavel Bogachev from PREA HRADA came on board for a short period of time.

Cathedraal - Voix Blanches LP (2012)

Country: France
Genre: Post Hardcore, Screamo, Post Rock
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 10

Damn, this request came as a pleasant surprise. Cathedraal are a band from Paris, France featuring former members of Madame De Montespan. Cathedraal play an atmospheric, blackened, and metallic style of music that incorporates piano and violin into their sound. The ten songs on Voix Blanches range from 2:40 on En Crimee to 6:42 on Des Noms Sur Des Valises. Cathedraal has crafted an album of hauntingly crushing music that's brutal and beautiful at times as well. I'd say that Cathedraal is influenced by bands such as Celeste, Aussitot Mort, Seraphim, and Deafheaven. The vocals are in French so I have no idea what's being said. With that being said, Voix Blanches is an amazing album and well worth your attention. Hightly recommended! Enjoy!

Well, LOCKTENDER are ex-Men As Trees and this same way, i can heard some similar topics in your music, a long passages, breaks, riffs on emotive hardcore intentions, greats structures, the voice are more deep than on M.A.T., if you ask me, i can say this band are the best son a band would have.

AUSSITÔT MORT - Nagykanizsa [2012]

Country: France
Genre: Post Hardcore
Label: Destructure Recs.
Tracks: 05
Lenght: 00:35

Released just in time for a 10 days Russian winter tour, Nagykanizsa is a new collection of songs by French post hardcore group Aussitôt Mort. Just like the name of their first full lenght « Montuenga » (Level-Plane & Pure Pain Sugar - 2008), the name of this new record is a place the band had to cross during one of its numerous travels. Rather than releasing a second full lenght, Aussitôt Mort decided to share these new songs with friends : they are or will be released on various vinyl formats shared with japaneses Heaven In Her Arms, americans Catalyst, or on german label Adagio. Nagykanizsa is your unique chance to listen to all the songs from the 2011 recording session at studio de la souleuvre, mixed and mastered by Guillaume Doussaud of Swan Sound Studio (Taint, Karysun, Amanda Woodward...), with Marc Euvrie (Sugartown Cabaret, Karysun, The Eye Of Time) on bass duties. This session shows a new face of Aussitôt Mort, with darker and longer songs (5 songs in 35 min). Just like the life of the band that has done many tours in France, Europe, Uk, Japan and now Russia, this new CD is a long and epic journey. You'll recognize the band writing style mainly consisting of melodic guitars riffs full of effects supported by complex hammered drum riffs; but you will also enjoy the progression that the band is taking on this new recording. Every riffs, every parts of each songs last long enought to let all details, rythms and melodies be developped. These longer songs give the listener some time to dream of far landscapes, and to imagine all moments lived by the band of travellers that is Aussitôt Mort.

Reznik - Mi Mamá Me Mete (2006)

Genre: Sludge, Punk, Doom Metal, Instrumental
Label: DIY

Reznik born in the summer of 2005 in the basement of an infernal Madrid. Wet, small and dark, as it was recorded that night on tape. The minimum maximum expression of pain, with black humor. With an initial training of 4 people (no replaceable), two years left on guitar and drums. Blade tip concerts anywhere. Stripper Iberian tour in 2008. European tour in 2010 the two alone. Hyperactivity. Self and no. Reznik's mental instruments, small and dark. Rock, black metal. Or not. It is both the world's simplest and most twisted. Reznik die past year, long life to Reznik. It's hard to believe that Integrity has been in existence for twenty years. One of the longest running bands out there, Integrity has always been one of my favorites, and it's great to see their older stuff being reissued. This 7" marks the 20th anniversary of Cleveland, OH's Integrity. These three songs were originally recorded in 1992 and were available on cassette, two of the three songs were also released on their split 7" with Mayday. As evidenced by Integrity's continual release of amazing albums, it's great to hear the band in their youth back in 1992. Kingdom Of Heaven is essential listening for Integrity fans. Blood red water._.Tales of addiction and despair (2011)

Country: Italy
Genre: metal, doom, sludge, stoner
Label: DIY
Year: 2011
Tracks: 5
Length: 24´

“When life is a stormy sea of addiction and grief, music could be a strong lighthouse”. Blood Red Water formed in the summer of 2010 with Michele (vocals, ex grindcore bands: NAB and Grunter Screams) Fiorica (ex and bass player in Blank Symbol, now at the drum). Michele & Fiorica were longtime friends, drinking partners and united by the passion for sludge music so they decided to create somethin...g wicked.Immediately Francesco “Volt” (of mr. Boonekamp) joined them as guitarist and feedback noise junkie, so Mick, Fiorica and Volt started to create their music as Blood Red Water. Tarantula (Lorenzo Petri from Gli sportivi , Valium doll) as bass player joined them after few months. For Blood Red Water it became clear that the band would not be the umpteenth cover band in the zone but their interest/purpose is writing the music they like and feel. All members love bands like EyeHateGod, Eletric Wizard, St. Vitus (list of musical influences is long, very long) but - jam after jam - they realized to not belong to any particular genre. Some tunes are pretty doomy, other tunes could be more into stoner stuff.

Blood Red Water lyrics are a merciless portrait of what can save a life or ditch it. Far away from fantasy themes, lyrics give off Michele’s life experience; you can even find redeem words as well as the deepest dopesick despair. At the end of 2011, they entered at the Flameout studio and they did their first 5 songs EP “Tales of Addiction and Despair”.For the time being the EP is in digital format with a free download, but a physical release of “Tales of Addiction and Despair” is coming soon in the pure spirit of D.I.Y.In the meantime line-up is changed: Lorenzo left them and they got a new additional guitar player; so the current line-up is:Michele vocals/Fiò drums/Francesco “ Volt” guitarsand Dodi guitarsNow BRW are planning to play live and spread their EP as much as they can.

This demo is ten raging tracks of insane kick-to-the-head Scandinavian punk rock! There is just intense, blistering speed coming from BOMBANGREPP and each song comes in at under two minutes and several tracks struggle to make it to the one minute mark. This is exactly what you want from a demo: short, sweet, and to the point, leaving you hungry for the next release. BOMBANGREPP are definitely gonna shred your fucking face off, their speed borders on power violence, the vocals have an intense growling staccato delivery, and the drumming is pure brutality. The Swedes know how to do it and this band is no exception. As far as I know this is BOMBANGREPP’s only release thus far and they sure made it count. Horn Of The Rhino - Grengus (2012)

Country: Spain
Genre: Sludge, Thrash, Doom
Label: Doomentia
Tracks: 8
Length: 45
'

Not that many band cite as influences BOLT THROWER, AUTOPSY and WINO or SOUNDGARDEN. Then again, not that many bands sound like Bilbao’s HORN OF THE RHINO. If in 2010 their first album ‘Weight Of Coronation’ on Doomentia Records proved to be slippery case – that is an album that denies any form of categorization, apart maybe from being filed under the ‘fucking heavy’ tag – its follow-up will undoubtedly see even more people scratching their heads, that is if they manage to survive this insanely powerful barrage of riffs.

A far more heavier and meaner affair than their previous offering, the subject matters of this fourth full-length alone should easily tip those who will dare stepping in that ‘Grengus’ is no nice walk in the park with songtitles like “Piles Of Severed Heads”, “Waste For Ghouls” or “Awaken Horror Of Tuul”. Once again, you’ll find here a collusion of sludge, doom and heavy fuckin’ metal but with the band own twist. Then again, it’s never totally devoid of melody somehow, with guitar player and frontman Javier Gàlvez unmistakable voice still be the most valuable weapon in their armoury as he’s more than ever able to rasp in a demonic voice one second and sing in a soothing yet desperate way the next.

The Jealous Sound - A Gentle Reminder LP (2012)

Country: USA
Genre: Emo, Indie Rock
Label: The Militia Group
Tracks: 10

The Jealous Sound is an emo and indie rock band from Los Angeles, CA featuring Blair Shehan from the legendary 90's indie rock band Knapsack and Nate Mendel from Sunny Day Real Estate. The Jealous Sound play a strong and melodic style of emo and indie rock that that's a throwback back to the 90's and early 2000's when bands such as Jimmy Eat World , Braid, The Promise Ring, and The Appleseed Cast were putting out some of the best albums that defined this genre of music. The Jealous is a definite must listen for fans of Algernon Cadwallader, Balance and Composure, and a lot of the bands currently being put out on Run For Cover and Topshelf Records. Overall, this is an amazing record, that will spend a considerable amount of time on your stereo. I also included the band's 2003 release Kill Them With Kindness for you to check out as well. Twelve Hour Turn-Discography (1999-2002)

Country: USA
Genre: Post Hardcore, Punk, Hardcore
Label: No Idea/Bakery Outlet
Tracks: 34

Twelve hour turn was a progressive rock and 90's Hardcore/Emo band formed Jacksonville Florida in 1999. Twelve Hour Turn only released three albums, which were The Victory Of Flight in 1999, Break Bend Spill in 1999, and Perfect Progress Perfect Destruction in 2001. The band also released a split LP with I Hate Myself in 1998 and a split 7" with Engine Down in the same year. Twelve Hour Turn is essential listening for people into the current screamo/emotive hardcore scene. These three albums are classic screamo, played well before the term was even coined. Twelve Hour Turn fit in well with bands such as Indian Summer, Sleepytime Trio, old Engine Down, and newer bands like Loma Prieta, Pianos Become The Teeth, Barrow, and Lumber Lung. This stuff still sounds fresh and exciting to this day. Members of Twelve Hour Turn currently run Bakery Outlet Records and play in Old Growth, Solid Pony, and the amazing Tubers. Enjoy! Highly recommended! I also included a partial discography of I Hate Myself, who played a similar, albeit messier style of emo/post hardcore.

Wishgift - Folk Twain 12'' (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Noise Rock, Free Jazz, Hard Rock, Punk
Label: Shopomore Lounge
Tracks: 5
Length: 18
'

Following their "Pretty Jenny" 7" single (Contraphonic, 2010) "Folk Twain" is the second release from Wishgift, a band that has spent the last two and a half years refining their sound in front of growing audiences in the Chicago underground scene and beyond. The five-song EP completes documentation of a meticulously crafted set of proggy, neurotic punk songs that have become a staple within their live performance, quickly gaining notoriety in DIY basements and lofts across the Midwest.

Wishgift was formed in 2008 when guitarist Davey Hart (of The Christmas Bride / formerly of Constellations, Widowers) moved from Colorado to Chicago and began collaborating with his friend, bassist John Paul Glover (of Slow Horse, Musket). John Paul approached free jazz drummer Marc Riordan (of Health & Beauty, Jason Ajemian and The Highlife, etc.) and they began rehearsing. The three-piece (an allusion to the Christian Trinity) refused to perform in front of a live audience until they had the most maniacal, perverted, and honest compositions (which went through six edits just to get an NC-17 rating). For fans of King Crimson, Nomeansno, Black Flag, the Jesus Lizard, and the experimental side of Descendents.

"Folk Twain" (one-sided 12" EP) is a limited-run of 300 copies and will be available exclusively on vinyl from Sophomore Lounge.

Pretty Wounds - Whatever, Go Away EP (2012)

Country: USA

Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Post Hardcore

Label: Self Released

Tracks: 6

Pretty Wounds are a Milwaulkee, WI based band who play a great amalgamation of music that incorporates elements of hardcore, punk, and post hardcore. Whatever, Go Away is the band's debut EP and features six songs that reflect the band's influences well, without the band veering off into sounding like a ripoff. Pretty Wound's influences include Transistor, Transistor, LickGoldenSky, and The Suicide Note as well as more straight forward hardcore bands such as Lewd Acts, The Suicide File, and Give Up The Ghost. Add a bit of swagger to the vocals and you have a really great sounding EP. At times the vocals pick up the swagger of vocalists such as the singer from Every Time I Die or a less abrasive and more refined Jordan Billie (Blood Brothers). Pretty Wounds offer up a great debut with Whatever, Go Away. Great stuff. Overall, it's great to see Pretty Wounds doing something different with their sound, which is definitely a good thing in my book. Great stuff! Enjoy!

Arms Of Ra-Unamed LP (2012)

Country: France
Genre: Post Hardcore, Doom, Metal, Sludge
Label: Swarm Of Nails
Tracks: 6

Hell yes! Here's the new album from Arms Of Ra. I was absoluted psyched to see the album up for free on Swarm Of Nails bandcamp page and absolutely had to do this post. Arms Of Ra continue their onslaught of heavy and powerful music, albeit in a more refined manner this time around. This band has definitely shown no signs of slowing down and Unamed definitely solidifies with me how amazing Arms Of Ra truly are. Incredible release. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

(Label Bio.)After a little less than two years since the release of their first EP and lots of hard work, Arms Of Ra finally releases its first album, composed with the same energy and the same drive to mash up their influences, from Tarantula Hawk, Dazzling Killmen, to Gaza or even Kickback. "Unnamed" contains six independents songs which are all linked by the same story of a man trying to deconstruct himself and disappear from society. If the music from this Parisian band lost in weight, it certainly gained in rage and sharpness. The voice has taken much more importance. The compositions got also much more depths, demonstrating the hours of reflections to mold these songs, and give birth to an album that’s more difficult to listen to than their first, while still keeping their own vision that goes beyond their influences.

Tantrum - Album Discography (1995 - 2003)

Country: France
Genre: Noisecore, Post Hardcore, Noise Rock, Sludge
Label: Radar Swarm, Semetry, Vicious Circle, Semetery, La Pont'Anch, Snuff.

Fuck yes! Oh fuck, fuck, fucking yes! This French act unloads some pounding fucking monolithic excellence in the vein of the finer side of the Hydra Head camp (think Isis, Knut, and so forth - decidedly more the latter than the former), blending doomy, sludgy, rhythmic dirges with a more caustic and abrasive side - often with fucked up shifts and time signatures involved. And it punishes. The recording sounds like a million bucks with hugely resonant percussion, sick distorted bass, perfectly crunchy and forceful guitars, searing vocal screams, and a dead even mix with perfect cohesion and ample clarity. Holy shit, I love this. The songwriting fairly consistently sways to and fro with lots of changes, but it all makes sense and stays unified in the end, so despite the presence of copious amounts of dissonance it's very tangible and rhythmically massive. The bass tone really does play a huge part in making this stuff so oppressive, and I totally love the vocals as well, because they're just relentless throat scorching screams that aren't at all irritating. "Pale" is a little chunkier with some start/stop rhythms (not the groovy variety, trust me), but "Dead End" closes side A with a little more twisted melody (even vocally, hinting at singing) in the vein of a band like Burst or something like that, adding a technical nuance that really stands out and highlights how tight and accurate the playing is here. Side B opens with the repetitive instrumental "Suppose Control Can Increase", leaning in on a slight Godflesh influence different from most of the other tracks herein, and every damn bit as effective. Closer "Other Suggestions and So On" follows a few harsher cuts with a more openly melodic side using octave chords and slightly more streamlined chord progressions, slowing down to a nice crawl at times and letting the notes really ring forth. The LP comes on clear vinyl an amazing gatefold sleeve with a strict color palette (almost exclusively shades of blue and yellow) and a layout structured very much in the Hydra Head school of repeating textural patterns, complete with excellent use of subtle gloss overlay printing for the band name and some of the patterns on the outer cover. The lyrics fit the tone of the music perfectly, too: "We fucked up our lives and didn't even turn back to pick up what we left on the ground, We screwed up everything we touched, invariably, We didn't have enough humor for a single exception, We crawled toward the spring and we weren't thirsty at all, We forgot to live our lives and didn't even laugh when the party began…" To my great dismay my copy of the sleeve got ruined in a recent tropical storm when my roof decided to leak profusely, so thankfully I was able to get the LP cleaned up enough to play perfectly! I plan to buy another copy of this ASAP, as well as scoring the CD pressing, because this shit rules. The LP is limited to only 500 copies though, so act fast if you'd like to snag one, and I highly fucking recommend it. I'm so glad this showed up in my mailbox, because this band deserves a shitload more attention, and something tells me they're going to be criminally underrated unless someone steps up. So please, by all means, fucking check this out. Do yourself a favor… Man, I love this. Great, great work. --Aversionline about The Frontier Bursts Into View

Country: USA
Genre: Post Punk, Post Hardcore, Noise Rock
Label: IFB REcords
Tracks: 2

Damn, talk about an unholy alliance. Only IFB could be cool enough to release a split 7" by these two incredible bands. IFB records continues to impress the hell out of me and continue bringing totally kick-ass releases to the table. For those of you not keeping score, IFB has had an amazing last two years and are responsible for the Drainland/Cellgraft-split 7", Hexis-X 7", The Autarkeia LP, the Autarekia/Cloud Rat-split 7", the Aussitot Mort Discography 2X LP and now this. I previously wrote about both bands on the blog and now I'm absolutely psyched to review the latest record featuring these two amazing bands. Shoppers are a Syracuse, NY based queer noise punk who play a style of music that combines pop sensibilities with a visceral, angular, and paranoid style of noise rock. Panzram are a Florida based two piece band who play ugly, seething, dirty, raging, and downtuned music that will appeal to fans of bands such as Herds, Walls, Pollution, and Moutheater. Seriously, this 7" totally blew my mind. As a matter of fact, I'm blowing a chunk of my next paycheck on records through IFB as we speak. Killer stuff! Keep em' coming, Nevin!

Single Mothers - S/T 7" (2012)

Country: Canada
Genre: Post Hardcore, Punk
Label:
Secret Voice
Tracks: 4

Now here's a great new band from London, Ontario that I recently stumbled across and had to post. Single Mothers play a great style of punk and post hardcore that calls to mind bands such as Breather Resist, Transistor, Transistor, Refused, and Suicide Note. Single Mothers play their style of music with tons of energy and a sense of urgency that is at times lost in a sea of countless bands playing this style of music. In a scene where so many bands are jumping on the Defeater and Touche Amore style of music, it's great to come across a band that isn't rehashing a style of music that's almost been beaten to death. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the style of music, but I wish more bands had this experimental slant to their music. Is it punk, hardcore, post hardcore, garage? You be the judge. Fans of Heavy Breath, Brass Caskets, and later era Suicide Note need to give this a listen. Great stuff!

Lumber Lung - S/T LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 9

Here's a band I really had no idea about until I randomly downloaded their debut LP on a whim after reading about the band on the web. Lumber Lung are an emotive hardcore and punk band from Santa Barbara and Goleta, CA. Lumber Lung plays a frantic and discordant style of music that's a throwback to late 90's ebullition style emo. Lumber Lung are influenced by bands such as The Shivering, The Pine, Torches To Rome, Yaphett Kotto, and old Sinaloa. Another thing that sets the band apart from the pack is the vocalist. The band's vocalist is female and she alternates between half-spoken, half sung vocals with an intense sense of urgency that results in an explosively powerful style of music. Damn, another great band I stumbled upon without knowing what to expect. Great album that's definitely worth your time. Enjoy!

Dead Swans - Anxiety And Everything Else EP (2012)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Hardcore, Punk
Label: Bridge 9 Records
Tracks: 7

Now here's an EP I've been anticipating after learning of plans for a release back in late 2011. I'm definitely not let down as far as how good I was anticipating this release to be. Dead Swans are a United Kindgom based band who formed in 2006. I became a fan of Dead Swans after hearing their 2009 release entitled Sleepwalkers. For those of you unfamiliar with the band, Dead Swans play a dark and frantic style of hardcore that channels the type of hardcore and punk pioneered by bands such as Give Up The Ghost (American Nightmare), The Hope Conspiracy, and Modern Life Is War and fuses that style of music with later era Black Flag. The seven tracks on Anxiety And Everything else is a continuation of where the band left off with Sleepwalkers. After a few more listens, I can easily say that this ep is the band's best material to date and hopefully shows where the band is taking their sound. Great stuff! Enjoy!

Chris Brokaw is a master performer. His music has a depth I've rarely seen matched and witnessing him live is a profoundly captivating experience. We're honored to have Chris join the family. His first release with us is a live c40 recorded in 2011. Sides are divided between electric and acoustic tracks. If you've never heard Chris's music before, this is a perfect starting point. He's been around the block and the songs have only improved with age.

Billy Bao - Dialectics of Shit LP (2008)

Country: USA / Spain
Genre: Noise, Punk, Noise Rock
Label: Parts Unknown Records
Tracks: 10
Length: 29
'

Parts Unknown is proud to present the first full-length offering from BILLY BAO. Born and raised on the unstable streets of Lagos, Nigeria before relocating to the alleyways of a then-recently freed Bilbao, Basque Country, BILLY BAO is a rough, dangerous, borderline example of society’s woes turned against itself, of cultural repression made flesh, as it foments into a madness both gleeful and destructive. Befriended by world-renowned noise guitarists MATTIN and XABIER ERKIZIA, the three men formed a personal alliance through the community of punk rock and the blunt-force politics therein. Every musical action BILLY BAO makes is a statement of political and personal intent, of the persecution that boils within him, and yet, across his previous releases (a self-titled CDEP and the Bilbo’s Incinerator 7”, both released by MATTIN, and the more recent Fuck Separation 10” on the S-S label), any notions of political punk rock of the tired, insipid Anglicized version are brutally choked out. MATTIN’s and ERKIZIA's musical backdrops swing with the force of BILLY BAO’s vocal delivery to rattling, devastating effect. Dialectics Of Shit screams freedom; freedom from presumptions, form, and safety. Its ten tracks bludgeon wantonly with black metallic ferox, industrial rhythm jackhammering, and a gauntlet of free-swinging riffs designed to mash ears into the asphalt. With this record, the directions hinted at in BILLY BAO’s earlier works are given new purpose, let loose to manipulate any expectations brought in with the listener. Touchpoints for this sound would include the nihilistic pummel of the BRAINBOMBS, and the aluminum baseball bat dunt of New Zealand post-punkers THE GORDONS, crossed up with an experimental fuckery akin to Japanese mentalists THE HANATARASH. Tracks bounce between left channel and right and skip audaciously in the grooves, but mainly serve to force perspectives, until every head is met eye to eye with his churning, bloodshot worldview. Limited to a first press of 500 copies.

Vile Mess - S/T EP (2012)

Country: Australia
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Grind
Label: Self Released
Tracks: 6

Here's another great band request that I absolutely needed to post after hearing. Vile Mess are a band from Canberra, Australia who play an angry, abrasive, and ugly style of grindcore influenced hardcore and punk. These dudes from down under take a page from the Iron Lung playbook and the band's equally influenced by bands such as Mind Eraser, Confines, and Vaccine. Vile Mess would easily fit on youth attack records. Rounding out the music are venomous, bile filled, and spiteful vocals. Overall, Vile Mess play a brutal and punishing style of music that's definitely worth checking out. Great stuff! Enjoy!

Bubonic Bear - Fleshworld LP (2011)

Country: USA
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Sludge,
Label: Self-Released
Tracks: 8

Bubonic bear are a two piece band from Philadelphia, PA who play a great style of music that fuses elements of hardcore, Punk, and sludge which results in an brutal, unrelenting, and powerful sound. Fleshworld is the band's debut LP and I have to say that I'm definitely impressed by the eight songs on the album. Bubonic Bear is not easily pigeonholed and the band's sound features Off Minor-esque time changes and adds technical hardcore in a vein similar to bands such as Capsule, Engineer, and Achilles. Throw in a healthy dose of Botch, influenced noise rock laden hardcore rock and you can begin to see the sheer brutality displayed on the eight songs that comprise Fleshworld. I can't believe this band is only a two piece. All I know is that I'm going to the band's bandcamp page to download the band's other two releases after hearing Fleshworld. Overall, Fleshworld is an outstanding album. Highly recommended! Enjoy!

Nitro Mahalia - Nitro Mahalia (2010)

Country: Austria
Genre: Post Punk, Electronic, Psychedelic, Jazz, Experimental.
Label: Interstellar Records
Tracks: 11
Length: 40
'

Founded in Vienna 2004, the instrumental combo with the strange-but-beautiful name NITRO MAHALIA made their own sonic nest somewhere between DIY-post-punk and electronic confusion. And a pretty impressive nest this is.

After personal changes in the last years Nitro Mahalia is now represented by Gregor Mahnert (drums), Tronstoner (bass, synthesizer), Elise Mory (keyboards) and Susi von Hannover (brass, accordion). Listening to this freshly released and untitled debut album for the first time, one could easily oversee a sharp turn, miss a trap door or stumble upon rhythmical changes without NITRO MAHALIA.

The clarity of ultra-tight riffs in the vein of citation-kings TRANS AM changes to a brain- dazzling, ZAPPAesque-progression while SKELETON KEY-like-percussion-powers switch to catchy pop tunes within the blink of an ear. To even further expand their already rich timbral universe the band likes to invite a couple of dear friends to bring in some new tricks to the show. So on this record NITRO MAHALIA host a fine selection of guests like Eva Jantschitsch (GUSTAV) singing about conquering the world, or Christian Egger (BEAUTIES OF THE NIGHT, JOY RELIGION, SATELLITE FOOTPRINTSHOP) lending his vocal talent to a cover version of WIPEOUT's 'Victims'. Chris Janka puts himself on the line while throwing out sparks of his 20 000 volts guitar and last but not least experimental turntablist DIEB13 is shifting his records at the explosive live recorded final of the record.

When a creepy movie-score catches you for a moment, bass and drum will tear you out of the ambience with a slap in your face, racing energetically fast forward and not drifting apart. From time to time NITRO MAHALIA devote themselves to quite epic sound paintings without getting lost in these vast worlds of psychedelia. Suddenly crunchy thrusts of hustle and bustle shoo around the corner, playful and rich of details, that don't get caught in mathematical systems but pulsate and celebrate their life. The fundament of the band made out of drums, bass and synthesizers are supplemented by brass cues which switch between far-out-jazz-lines, disco coolness and a mangy fuck-you pose. Just at the right moment the keys get distorted so intensely, it almost sounds like a grinding hurdy- gurdy playing backwards in the streets of Amsterdam. NITRO MAHALIA manage to take themselves back in the right moment, but also beckon the audience through shear density of sound, when it's time to shut up. The album was mastered by Martin Siewert.

Shield Your Eyes - Volume 4 (2011)

Country: UK
Genre: Mathrock, Indie.
Label: Function Records
Tracks: 9
Length: 39
'

“Volume 4”, as the title suggests, is their fourth opus. Their last, “Theme From Kindness”, though an excellent record was for me a slight stagger backwards from the extremely high standards they established prior to that, for all that it featured “Aves”, possibly their finest song to date; I initially feared they had hit the glass ceiling, and after having been so constantly active for so long, that would have been very understandable. “Volume 4”, however, slaps that theory right into the grave; not only is this the best record they have put out to date, it’s probably the best record you, I or Uncle Tom Cobbley will hear all year.

Their already-established penchant for ripping apart the self-imposed limits many generic bands operate within is taken onto new heights here. The extraordinarily talented guitarist and vocalist Stef has not only still further polished and extended his utterly unique playing style, his voice sounds more soulful and more forlorn than ever before. “Volume 4” is less of a stride forward than a leap measured in light years, and will leave their compatriots and peers gasping in their wake. It’s like someone just discovered a whole new set of colours, brighter and more beautiful than ever before. There is such an astonishing breadth of ideas and textures here, yet the arrangements are so instinctive and perfectly balanced that you instinctively know that there is nothing planned about them. Shield Your Eyes have broken through to the other side and discovered how to simply project their souls directly into their musical compositions. It’s breathtakingly powerful and simply ticks every box to be considered great music – incredibly musically deft, utterly unlike anything else, sonically stunning and dripping with soul. All it will take is one set at the SXSW festival, or for a copy of this record to land on Thurston Moore’s desk, and they will find themselves hitting the stratosphere.

All of which just made it even more imperative that you, world, get off your arse and discover for yourselves just how amazing SYE now are. Destroy your record collection – this is all you’re going to need from now on. And go see them live, before they become hipper than a hipperpotamus in low slung jeans and it becomes impossible to get a ticket. If you don’t, just don’t say I didn’t warn ya… --Subba - Cultcha

…The band was formed in September 2009 for the reason to play loud and pissed-off music. In March 2011, we recorded a demo and in April the line-up was completed. At the moment we are preparing for a full-length album. Our music can be described as Crust with a mean influence of Black Metal, Stenchcore, and Sludge/Doom. Our message is concerned around some nihilistic and depressive topics, and beside some personal issues, about individual freedoms and thoughts on the conditions of the contemporary society…

Dying In This Place - Alma Demo (2011)

Country: Croatia
Genre: Emo, Screamo
Label: DIY
Tracks: 4
Length: 45
'

During the rainy winter period in the south part of Croatia, five best friends was sharing ideas about music and scene. After a while they came along and decided to start a band and tried to express their thoughts and feelings about that and also about eyeryday life in this area. Some of them took the instruments for the first time, but they had the great will to give their best shots in the process of making music. The result is demo named "Alma" which they recorded by themselves only two months after they got together. They play emotional music with post melodies and screaming vocals what brought to us a doze of honest and energetic songs and type of music which they call slowscreamo. After some time spent on practicing they improved themselves and now have a couple of new songs which they plan to record for their new ep until the beginning of summer.
